Hi there as you can see I am a MArshallsay my grandfather was ALbert Marshallsay of Swanage dorset (born 1900), his father was Walter Marshallsay (born 1864) his father before him was Robert Musselsea (born 1817) who was the son of John Mufselsea (born 1785 in Chickerell, Dorset) also known as John Randall Marshallsay.
This is where it gets a bit difficult, after doing some research on the online dorset parish records I have found another John Randall Marshallsay but this one was born in 1780 to a Grace Rendal (so we were thinking maybe his middle name is linked to this).

Assuming this is the correct person, then I can go back another 3 generations which expands the tree massively. William 1749 married to Grace, then his father John born 1714 married Dorothy, then his father James born 1685 married to Mary Smart. I haven't added this onto my version of the tree yet as I want to make sure that John is the correct one (although I think he is as is the only John born around the correct time).
I would be really interested to hear of anyone else researching the Marshallsays from Chickerell as Im trying to see just how far I can get back.

Hi, I am also interested in the ancestors of James and Mary Marshalsay. I am descended from Elizabeth Marshalsay, a daughter of John and Dorothy Marshalsay. Elizabeth married Nicholas Mitchell of Portland on 4 April 1771. The Marshalsay name must have had some significance in the family because my grandfather who was born in Melbourne in 1893 was named John Marshalsie Hoskins and Marshalsie was passed on to my uncle as a second name and to his five year old grandson as a second name. A great aunt thought that the name had a French connection. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the origin of the surname.

Hi Jenny,Is your Marshallsay any relation to William Alexander MARSHALLSAY born 1853 in Corfe Castle, Dorset?
He came to live in Portsmouth, Hampshire and met his wife Matilda PASSELLS which is my side of the family. They ran the 'India Arms' pub in Great Southsea Street, Portsmouth.
He was quite a well known person due to the fact he was secretary to the Portsmouth Licensed Victuallers Association. I have a copy of a newspaper artical which reports of his death due to being thrown from his horse cart. I do not know who his Parents were but if he is connected to you and it is of interest I could e-mail you the newspaper report. lesley.mann102@ntlworld.com

If the suggested extension on your tree is correct our families intersect at John(born1714)married to Dorothy. His father was James(born 1685) and mother Mary.
John had the following children:- James 1736/7 myGg5, John 1738/9, Mary 1740/41, Anne 1741/2, Anne 1743, Dorothy 1746/7, William 1749, Elizabeth 1750, Edward 1752, Benjamin,1753Christopher 1755.
James 1736/7 and Martha Rose both of Chickerell had the following children:- William 1758, * James 1760, John 1762, Thomas 1763 and Thomas 1764.*(My line)
By this time the spelling became Marshallsea.

Our trees intersect at John (1714) and Dorothy.
They had eleven chldren including James (b.1736/7) and Elizabeth (b.10/3/1750). My line descended from James and became Marshallsea. I have a fairly comprehensive tree from James' children on, particularly from when they arrived in Australia in the mid-1850's
By chance I met your cousins(?) John at a Probus lunch and he mentioned his father's and grandfather's second christian name.

I'm also descended fom the Marshallsay family, although I only discovered this 2 days ago, so was surprised and pleased to see it on a mailing list digest this morning. I now have Mary MARSHALLSAY born 1736 to Thomas and Mary, baptized in Wyke Regis, Dorset. She married John LOVELL in Chickerell in 1761. John and Mary LOVELL's daughter Mary married John BOWN in Fleet in 1786. Their son Richard BOWN is my several 4x great grandfather. His daughter Betsey was born in Bincombe, married John HOWE, son of Joseph HOWE and Amelia nee MULLETT of Upway, and moved to Corfe Castle, then Sheffield, Yorkshire in the 1870s. All good clean fun!

Have read your Marshalsea with interest. I have Ruth Marshalsea b1806 in Whitelackington Somerset who married William Harvey b1801 Whitelackinton Somerset. they married 15 January 1826 in St Mary's Church Whitelackington Somerset. I was wondering if my Ruth could be a daughter of Levi Marshalsea. I recently visited Whitelackington which is such a small village, probably less than 30 families at that time (& enow)so feel sure there must be a connection. I have no records of family connected to her. Would love to hear your comments. PS: My Ruth is definitly from Whitelackington Somerset and not White Lackington Dorset.
Many thanks - Lynda Benjamin (Harvey)
