Hello Heather
I believe the Janet Johnstone MURDOCH that you equire about was the daughter of Robert MURDOCH, This Robert MURDOCH was born on 17 Nov 1805 in Auchinleck being the son of William MURDOCH. The parish register gives no name for the mother.
However a death entry dated 1897 for a sister Jean (married GIRVAN) states the mother was Janet JOHNSTONE.

Alastair

Hello Alastair, We used to correspond some years ago in regard to the family of Robert Murdoch and helen Hutchison when I lived in Timaru NZ. Reading your note here about Janet Johnstone MURDOCH born 14 January 1959 Auchinleck, this name Johnston(e) is often a middle name in our branch of the family, do you know where it comes from or why it is there to distinguish us from other family groups?
Regards
Heather

Hi Heather. I have an interest in Robert Murdoch and Grizzel Braidfoot in that their daughter Marion Murdoch married David Reid who was the brother of my great great grandfather John Reid. I have done some research into David's line.

Interestingly, John's parents were George Reid and Margaret Murdoch (1764-1833). I have often wondered if this Margaret might be a cousin (maybe once removed) of Marion.

It would be good to hear from you. Ian in NZ

Correction, I meant to say New Haven is ten miles east of Erie, PA. New Haven is almost gone as a town, There is a church with adjacent cemetery and I believe a post office, but no stores. James was listed as a Farmer through most of censuses after arriving in Iowa.

This is an update to James B. Morton. The "B" may stand for Baird, and we have been told it was Bard. James came to USA in about 1844, he met and married Louisa "Lois" Flower I believe in New Haven, N.Y. which is located about 10 miles west of Erie, PA He initially stated his occupation as cooper, I believe it interprets to "barrel maker." He moved several times to two or three counties, west until he settled in Iowa, Clay Co., initially in Bismarck, or National. Same County. He went to Civil War, and lied about his age saying he was 40 years old, but in fact was 50. He took to drinking after the war and he and Lois separated, in that James went to Bridgewater, S. Dakota, where he was able to purchase 160 acres of land pretty cheaply due to his service in Civil War. His two oldest children, Sarah Elizabeth and Mary Edna also were living in Spencer, S.D. which is where he ended up spending his remaining years living with Sarah. He died at the age of 90 years.

Known vitals: born in Ayreshire, Glasgow, Scotland, March 27, 1815. Had four children, in USA, Sarah, Mary, James Henry, and Margaret Bernice. If any one out there can help me, or point me in the right direction, I would be humbly appreciative; Thank You.

.

" Lots of married women especially Widows, reverted back to their maiden name after being Widowed. "

Because in Scotland a woman never relinquishes her 'own' or maiden name (holds to this day). So on marriage she often chooses to be known as Mrs MacFee (or whatever), then when Mr MacFee departs this life she goes back to being Katie McTavish (or whatever!).
Hello Dan,

On the births of William, and his brothers, i honestly dont think there is any way to confirm one way or another why they dont exist, there are thousands of other people in the same position, regarding births in this period throughtout Scotland.

You have to take a leap of faith in this incidence.

You start with William Livingstone, and Annabella Craig, they had a couple of children with the surname Taylor, as middle names. You know from some sources William Livingstone, states he was born in Riccarton, Ayr. you then look for a William Livingstone, born around 1824/25. in that area Riccarton, Ayr. in the 1841. census. and this one appears.

1841. address Old Street, Riccarton.

William Tailor. M. age 70 years, Wool Weaver, born Ayrshire,
Elizabeth Tailor, F. age 40 years, born Ayrshire,
James Livingstone, M. age 20 years, Calico Printer, born Ayrshire,
William Livingstone, M. age 15 years, Coal Miner, born Ayrshire,
John Livingstone, M. age 13 years, Coal Miner, born Ayrshire.

The 1841. census. does not give relationships of the people on it.

The way i interpet this census is Elizabeth Tailor, above is the widow of James Livingstone, and William Tailor, aged 70 years is her father, and the three Livingstone, boys are her children. Lots of married women especially Widows, reverted back to their maiden name after being Widowed.

There is only one marriage in Ayrshire, between a James Livingstone, and a Taylor/Tailor. and that was 22/Sep/1821. Riccarton, Ayr, alas your luck is stiil not very good because the lady in question has no first name on the index, the marriage is on Scotlandspeople, but i dont know if there is any further information on it, but i think you will have to risk the credits to see.

I would say with a lot of confidence that this is your family, also William, and John, were Coal Miners, and John, remained with his brother from at least 1861. up until 1881.

Hurlford, Crookedholm, and Riccarton, are all within a few miles of each other, and Riccarton, later on became part of the town of Kilmarnock.

Regards,
Jonn.

Do you know who I could contact to confirm this?

I did purchase the death certificate. William's parents were James Livingstone and Elizabeth Taylor. So far unable to find any information on them.

Your comments have raised a couple of questions for me. You mentioned 2 brothers, James and John. I was only aware of John. Do you have any information on James? How do you know there were 2 brothers?

I need a little help on geography. Both death certificates for William and Annabella list the location as Hurlford District, Ayr County. There is no town listed. Is Crookedholm the town and how did you find this information?

Thanks again,
Dan
Hello Ram88doc,

I dont think the birth of William Livingstone, or his two brothers James, and John, were ever recorded, or the records never survived.

Your best solution is to purchase his death certificate from Scotlandspeople. This certificate should provide his parents names, providing the person who registered his death had this information.

It looks like William Livingstone, died 1891. aged 65 years, Crookedholm, Ayr.

His wife Annabella Craig Livingstone, died 1894. age 64 years, again at Crookedholm, Ayr.

There is a possible chance William's, mother's maiden name may have been Taylor.

Regards,
Jonn.

William married Anabella Craig in Riccarton on 30 Dec 1853. They had 7 children. It appears the Livingstone family lived in Ayrshire for several generations.
Hi,
Mary Richmond was my paternal grandmother's( Mary Barnes) mother.
I have some info on the Richmonds, but not as far back as you,I think. Yes, I'd welcome any input.

I feel very sad about Mary Richmond because she seems to have lost several very young children, & then died when the last baby was born,at only 38.That baby lived only 4 days.

My grandmother Mary & her Sister Agnes were the only ones to survive. They seem to have gone to live with their father's(John Barnes) parents in Crompton Street in Riccarton after these last two tragic deaths.

Thanks for your message!
Jennifer, Montreal.

Dan,
There is a Livingston/Livingstone expert reseacher that I contacted a long time ago. I didn't have as much info as I now do, so he couldn't help me. But, now maybe he could since I've made all the connections. Maybe he would know why the three brothers were living along on the 1841 census. I haven't contacted him in 3 years, and have lost his contact info, but maybe I can still find him. I'll work on that.

Marc

Marc,
Thank you for the additions to my family tree. Do you have any documentation on the birth record or parents for William Livingstone (born about 1823)? The last record I can find is the 1841 census and only 3 brothers are listed: James, William, & John. The parents are missing; possibly deceased? I have checked the Parish records for all 3 of the brothers and cannot find any birth records.
I'm descended from James Livingstone (great grandfather)the brother of John. James married Margaret Frew on 1 Jun 1883 and they had 8 children, including my gf Alex Rigg Livingstone. They immigrated to the USA in 1915 and settled in Chicago.
Dan

I hadn't seen the '61 & '71 census.

Annabella, the mother is the dau. of James Craig & Annabella Richmond. Annabella the dau. was b. bef. 21 Oct., 1827. I'm descended from their son Joseph Thomas Dobbie b. May 19, 1885 in New Cumnock, Ayshire. Joseph Thomas who went by Tom came to the U.S. bef 1900 with his Dobbie grandparents. He went by the name of Tom Dobbie. They settled first in Pittston, Luzerne Co., PA, then, as an adult, Tom worked for the railway and settled in Altoona, Blair Co., PA. Just to remind you, it is AGNES Gemmell married to Robert Barnes who is related to me, not MARGARET, although I have many Margarets in my tree too.
Yes, it really looks like the same family!
John Barnes ( my great grandfather)went back to live with his parents in Riccarton. He & his wife,MARY RICHMOND,had 6 children in the 13 years between 1862 & 1875.Only 2 of them survived, the last baby living only 4 days, surviving his mother by 3 days, in January of 1875.
What a tragedy !
John took Agnes(about11) & Mary(about5)back to Riccarton to live with his father Robert Barnes & his mother Margaret Gemmell in Crompton Street.
(One of the children who died was named Margaret, born 1872,died 1874.)
The whole thing must have been devastating.
A few months ago, I knew none of this, not even that my grandmother Mary had had a sister!
I have had an enormous amount of very kind help from David Abercrombie whom I found whilst trying to find info on Mary Richmond.I believe he has Margaret Gemmell in his "Ancestry"tree, too & if I'm not mistaken, it was the Gemmell name he was interested in.You might try contacting him.
He sent me a lot on my great grandparents, but I don't think it's of much use to you, unless you want to check on the names & dates of the children who died.
Good to hear from you,
Jennifer.

Your best bet is staying with ScotlandsPeople and checking more thoroughly. Try the OPRs (Old Parish Registers). There is a record of a James Livingston for November 1854 in Riccarton, which is likely a Christening entry. There is also a Census entry for James Livingston, age 16, for 1871 in Riccarton. This will enable you to confirm the names of his parents. In the LDS family search site, his parents are given as William Livingston and Ann Craig, which could very well be correct, although the birth year is 1853, and it is through a submission and not an extracted copy of an actual record. There is also a marriage record for a James Livingston in 1883 (without name of wife) for both the parishes of Maybole and Galston which may well be the same person, as banns of marriage were often read in both parishes where the couple resided.

You can try these suggestions and see if they are your man.

Hugh Gemmell

Anna:

We are two different families I think. James Gemmill was b 8 Oct 1786 in Riccarton. His parents were John Gemmel and Jane (Jean) Richmond. They m 2 Dec 1885 in Fenwick, Ayr. James Gemmill moved to Kilmarnock where he was a weaver and sewing agent. He m 1) Margaret Hopkin of Riccarton (she died I think, maybe in childbirth) and had a daughter Jane (Jean) and m 2) Janet Farquhar 18 May 1830 in Kilmarnock, and had a second family, including my great-grandfather.

I found some of your family in the 1841 Census, I think, still living in Riccarton: John Gemmill, shoemaker, age 75, and Elizabeth, female servant, age 40 (daughter?).
Dear Jennifer:

I am very pleased to have found you. Your grandmother's (Mary Barnes) grandmother Agnes Gemmell is a relative of mine! Her brother James Gemmill is my g-g grandfather. He lived out his life in Kilmarnock but was born in Riccarton, and his occupation was as a weaver and weaving agent. The names of their parents were John Gemmell and Jane Richmond.

If you have any information about either of these families, I would be delighted to hear from you, as I have never been able to get beyond John and Jane (Jean) to their origins, or to other members of their families, beyond the fact they married in the Parish of Fenwick, and then moved to Riccarton, where they had their children.

Hugh Gemmell
Toronto, Canada

My name is David Brown from Dalmellington, the son of another David Brown, himself born into a large family in 1947.
I guess we're cousins! My thread is through their son Willian Nelson Dickson. I believe I've seen the census showing your Mary and George. I have a bit of information on John (his parents and siblings) but not his birthplace though he was born in Ireland. Also have some info on Agnes. If you want to contact me off this forum let me know or if there's something specific I can help with. Do you have anything on John's birth or prior? This is exciting!

John and Agnes were also my great-great-grandparents. The line connects through their daughter Mary, when she married George Stewart.

I believe, from information gained from trawling these forums, that Agnes lived with Mary and George and their family in her final years.

Over a year old, but so glad I found this thread...

I have worked my history back to the John Dixon / Agnes Tyre family. Specifically through their daughter Mary Stewart (Dixon). If anyone is still looking at this thread, I'd be interested in sharing any information.

This is the exact same list that I have...but it doesn't help me much. My ancestor is on this list (Dillon), but what I want to know is more about the 5th Fusiliers and I can't seem to correctly identify exactly who they were in 1871. Not knowing this makes it difficult to track my ancestor.
If anyone has any info (that's easy to understand) I'd surely appreciate being pointed in the right direction. What I'm finding online are mixed facts and overlapping dates...lots of non-solid facts.

Thank you!

Greeting from Mexico,
If Margaret's surname looks like Frew, it likely is. Have you done any research on Margaret Frew at all? Have you been able to download the image of their marriage details from Scotland's People which will give you the names of their parents?
Also where is the US did the family settle?
I do have Galston Frews' in my data base that may help.
Saludos'
Linda Nordby
