I just ran across a sampler made by Margaret McKnzie in 1808 in Stornoway, on the Island of Lewis, Scotland, UK. Orphan family heirloom. In an antique shop in the northwest. Anybody who'd like to know more can contact me a twalden27@gmail.com I might be able to persuade the dealer to let me take a digital photo. I post this 'cause I can only imagine how excited I'd be if someone clued me in to a sampler by one of my ancestors I'd be tickled. Alexander Mckenzie is from Stornoway (THE FAMOUS EXPLORER for whom the McKenzie River in Canada is named). Anyway, there it is.
Tom

I've been researching John Montgomery of Balallan (b. c. 1819) who left Scotland in June 1840 and traveled to the Pacific Northwest (Washington Territory); he ended up marrying four Indian women in succession while at Fort Nisqually on Puget Sound and died in 11/1885. His mother (probably Anne) died in Balallan in 1852, and she was second wife to John's father who was dead by that time. He knew how to handle livestock/cattle & horses - did that for the HBC. John had three known sister Catherine _____, ______ Kennedy & , step-sister Christina McLeod. He was a firend of Angus Montgomery of Balallan and Angus McDonald of Stornoway. Any clues helpful?

Re: Macdonald in the Isle of Harris

Karen,

Although they have the names Isle of Harris and Isle of Lewis, they are conjoined. They are part of a large group of islands of Scotlands west coast. These islands are separated into 2 groups - the Inner Hebrides (which is the islands closest to the mainland), and the Outer Hebrides (those furthest away from the mainland). It is the Outer Hebrides which are also known as "The Western Isles". Hebrides incidentally is pronounced Heb-rid-ees.

In Scotland, registration of births didn't begin until 1855. Prior to this we are dependant on the records of the church (known as OPR's, old parish records). Unfortunately, the only OPR's from Harris which have survived are those from 1820 onwards, so there is unlikely to be any birth record for him.

The other thing to point out is that Kenneth wouldn't have been able to hold a conversation with you ! Harris is very much a Gaelic speaking area, and even now there are many people on the island who consider Gaelic as their first language. I have a friend whose elderly mother lives on Harris, and whenever they speak it's in their native tongue. So Kenneth MacDonald, whilst he was on Harris would actually have been Coinneach mac Domhnaill.

When the 1841 census was taken, the enumerators (those who went round compiling the census returns) were instructed to translate Gaelic names into their English equivalents. In a very remote parish, in the north-west of the Isle of Harris, is a little hamlet by the name of Drinishader. Living there in 1841 was a certain Kenth McDonald, aged 25.
He was a tenant, ie he would have lived in a small rented cottage (known as a croft) with a small patch of land in which he grow crops, vegetables etc, and graze a cow, goat etc.

Contact me on dgsw07438@sky.com for further info.

Don
(Domhnaill !)

Well I really have no dates as to when he left, But Ihave the birth of his first child and Sarah was born 1849 in Toronto, so if he immigrated like the book of Bill Lawson's in 1841 and he meet Sarah between Quebec and Toronto then they married between 1845-1848 and a year later a little baby is born... I know this is quessing but it's as close as I can get?? until I find documentation.. thanks Karen

You give no date for Kenneth leaving Harris. However there is only one Kenneth of the correct age in the 1841 Census and he is already married with a young family.
There is another Kenneth aged 23 living at home with his family.
The previous response suggesting Breanish is a possibility as Harris and Lewis are all one island and there is no Kenneth of suitable age in the 1841 census in Breanish.
Happy hunting, you WILL succeed if you are patient.
Eric

WOW!! that is more information I've gotten in 5yrs of researching Kenneth Macdonald, I have both listing from the census Isle of Harris and Western Isle of Scotland, just wasn't sure if they were separate places??? at least with a port of entry I might beable to trace him more, I think Kenneth married here in Ontario, because his wife was Ontario born.. and so were all there children. the only boy they had they named him Albert Edward ?? and usually if the pattern fits it's named after the father's father???? again thanks Karen

Hi Karen:
There is one Kenneth MacDonald, b. 1815, in Bill Lawson's book, "A Register of Emigrant Families from the Western Isles of Scotland to the Eastern Townships of Quebec". However, there is no marriage information for him and it states that he was from Brenish, Lewis (Isle of Lewis which is just north of Isle of Harris.) This makes it difficult to say whether or not this is the correct Kenneth MacDonald.
Following is the entry in Bill Lawson's book:
"John MacDonald 1796- of Brenish, Lewis
= Margaret MacIver 1800-
1. Kenneth 1815-
2. Malcolm 1821- = (1) Ann MacLeod?
(2) Ann Murray?
3. Effie 1824-
4. Angus 1826-
5. John 1826-
John MacDonald came from Brenish, Lewis in 1841, and settled in Lingwick."
(I think that Lingwick is in Compton County, Quebec.)
Isle of Harris is part of the Western Isles of Scotland, aka The Outer Hebrides.
Bill Lawson is the foremost genealogist of the Western Isles of Scotland. You can "google" his name to find his email, address or phone number. He and his wife, Chris, are situated on Isle of Harris and have a genealogical centre there. (You would have to pay some for his services, of course.)
In case you haven't thought of it, you might try finding the above names on the census to see if there are any in the same area as Kenneth.
This is the only Kenneth MacDonald I could find in two of Bill Lawson's books in my possession.
If you have any trouble finding contact numbers for Bill Lawson, I can help you with that.
Good luck in your searching!
Mary

I have quite a bit of information on this family collected over many years but unfortunately cannot take the line of Alasdair MacDonald (1773-1858) whom you refer to back any further than Alasdair.
Yes "Alasdair" is the Gaelic form of "Alexander".
If you contact me directly at blair@jbmaca.com I will be able to send you what information I have on the family and also a monograph on North Uist genealogical research and another that specifically relates to researching persons who emigrated from North Uist before 1841.
Blair MacAulay (Toronto)

She was delighted to see us and it transpired that we were descended from a common ancestor.John Salmean had arrived on North Uist from Scandinavia in 1760 following a shipwreck. She is directly descended from his son John and myself from his son Sacris.
We keep in touch and share family details.I am grateful for the lead.

Many thanks

Duncan Campbell - Volunteer Corps, Isle of Skye during 1790s

My ggg-grandfather, Duncan Campbell, born 1781, died 09 Apr 1866, son of John of Skye, was for six years, a drummer in the Volunteer Corps. Presumably, this meant one of the fencible regiments raised during the time of the French Revolution. The most likely regiment seems to be The Regiment of the Isles or MacDonald's Fencibles [29 May 1798 -16 Jul 1802]. Is this likely the case, or were there other fencible regiments raised in the area?

Good day James, Today we received a marriage certificate for an ancestor of my partner, Helen. John McDonald married Anne Gillies in 1841 at Morpeth, and the abode of both is given as 'Dunmore'. From my searching, it looks as though they were immigrants on the Midlothian in 1837. Helen's line comes through John McDonald's daughter Margaret McDonald. But we think she was born about 1837 - before they left Scotland, on the boat, or soon after its arrival. Maybe John's first wife, mother of our Margaret, was one of the women who died on the voyage, because I can't find any likely McDonald deaths in NSW between 1837 and 1841.

Obviously the passenger list is what we need, but unfortunately the source everyone seems to refer to: www.acay.com.au seems to be defunct or at least down today.

We'd be grateful if you could help with any information or leads to follow to work out who John McDonald's wife / Margaret McDonald's mother was.
Hi JC,
Facinating post! I am a descendant of Malcolm MacLean, son of Lachlan. Our family has a fore n aft cap which has been passed down thru the generations. The story is that it was worn by Capt. Alexander MacDonald,(brother of Catherine MacDonald, wife of Lachland's son Malcolm). The cap is said to have been worn by her brother at the Battle of Waterloo when he served in the Black Watch. It is very ornate and is said to have been hand-beeded by a gypsy woman for the Capt. It was passed from Malcolm->Peter Francis->Daniel Joseph->Malcolm Sr. -> Malcolm Jr., my father-> to me. Not sure if the story has changed thru the years, but it is a prized family possession, none the less!
Waterloo was in 1815 and the Black Watch participated- so I would have to do a bit more research to verify! Would love to hear any more stories you may have about Lachlan's ancestors- I have our line descending from him, but nothing from Barra.
Teresa MacLean
teri.maclean@yahoo.com
