Here's the info I have on Juan
Bautista Spotorno. Borne in Trinidad on sept. 13, 1832, died in Trinidad on oct. 29th, 1917. His parents were of italian descent.
Spent some early years in
Europe and the United States, where he started medical school but did not finish.
Upon his return to Cuba he was an active participant in the aborted conspiracy of 1851 led by Isidoro de Armenteros in Trinidad. Armenteros and two of his co-conspirators were executed by the spanish authorities. Along with
Federico Cavada marched to
Camaguey with a force of armed men to join major general
Ignacio Agramonte y Loinaz in the war.
He was elected to the
Camara de Representantes and later became its president. He replaced Salvador
Cisneros as Presidente de la Republica en
Armas. After the war of 68 he stayed away from politics for some years and then joined the Partido Autonomista and opposed the revolution of 1895 le by Jose
Marti, thinking that it was best for Cuba to co-exist legally with the spanish regime.
One of my ancestors,
Tomas Cantero, served as an officer under his command.
I know that I have some information on
Guillermo Sarjant Lynn, however I'm going to need a little time to dig it out.
