Jimenez-Ansley

I am researching the family of my great-grandfather Juan Francisco Ansley y Llanes and his wife, Maria Teresa Verdaguer del Valle.

Juan Francisco Ansley y Llanes had a sister. I do not know her name or the first name of her husband. His last name was Jimenez. They had at least 5 children: Alfredo Jimenez Ansley, Amelia Jimenez y Ansley, Julia Jimenez y Ansley, Jose Joaquin Jimenez y Ansley, Mario Jimenez y Ansley.

Alfredo Jimenez Ansley was a pharmacist. I do not know when he was appointed but by 1929 he was Inspector General of Pharmacies for Cuba. His wife was Maria Teresa Alum. They had at least four children: Jose Joaquin Jimenez Alum, Hortensia Jimenez Alum, Raul Jimenez Alum, and Alfredo Jimenez Alum. Alfredo was a pilot on the ill-fated "Pro Faro Colón" and died when all 3 Cuban planes crashed near Cali, Columbia 29 Dec 1937.

Amelia and Julia Jimenez y Ansley were married but I do not know the names of their husbands.

Jose Joaquin Jimenez Ansley (b. Abt. 1872) was a doctor. He and his wife Mercedes Paz lived in Havana.

Mario Jimenez Ansley was apparently connected with the Red Cross in Cuba.

I will appreciate receiving and information on this family.

I found the following information in the 1954 Libro de Oro de la Sociedad de La Habana:

Maria Teresa Alum, widow of Jimenez Ansley, living at Calle 14 No. 5, entre Calzada y Linea, Vedado.
Children:
Hortensia, married to Jose Alvarez Roman. Their children are: Jorge and Lourdes Alvarez y Jimenez.

Raul, married to Victoria Gutierrez y Carbonell. Their son is Raul Alfredo Jimenez Gutierrez.

The 1958 Directorio Social de La Habana has the same information, but omits Raul Alfredo Jimenez Gutierrez. It adds a phone number, F-6552.

No other information is given.

Thank you for your reply and information from the Libro de Oro de la Sociedad de La Habana. I had the information from the 1954 version (taken from a previous post to this board) but I had not seen the 1958 information. Do you have these or other copies of the social guides?

I note that your web name is Santana. I also have a relative, Christina Ansley y Chaves who married an unknown Santana. They lived in Cienfuegos about 1905 but I believe they had previously lived in Sagua la Grande. Her father was Joseph Arcadio Ansley y Llanes, my great-uncle, who was a dentist in Sagua la Grande.

I have only these books of La Habana, the 1954 Libro de Oro de la Sociedad de La Habana and the 1958 Directorio Social de La Habana. Most of my books are of Matanzas, where my family is from. I also have some Cuba books that name names, but they are limited to influential figures for the most part. And I also have Familias Cubanas.

Out of curiosity, I looked in the evendon.net 1958 Havana Phone Directory and found Raul Jimenez Alum--Cine, 44 no. 3305 Marianao 2-7997 (Residential, p. 166). So I looked in the Business directory (p. 478) and found under Cines, Ambassador, with the same address. There are probably habaneros here who have been to this movie theater.

My Santana ancestry is from Telde, Gran Canaria, arriving in Cuba in 1886 (my grandfather). I have no Santanas in Las Villas. In Cuba: Isla Abierta, Ansley is listed as having been first found in Las Villas in the XIX century. But you probably already knew this.

If I find any other information, I will certainly pass it on.

Jorge,
There are several interesting facts that match, e.g., pharmacist, Sagua la Grande, and Yanes/Llanes surname. However I do not have any other information that would show a connection to my family. I will keep your message on file though in case I find more information that does show a connection.

Your mention to "Most of my books are of Matanzas" got my attention since I have been looking for a book 'Almanaque y Guia Social Matancera" by Pedro S. Tapanes with no luck.

I am interested in this book to see if it has something about the surname Ovares, my wife's father last name, and if it has the biography of the Bishop of Matanzas Msgr. Alberto Martin Villaverde.

I will greatly appreciate if you can look trough your books to see if they say something about them.

Thank you
Jose A. Tavel

I do not have the book by Tapanes, unfortunately. The only place I have found the Ovares name, so far, has been in the book, Cuba: Isla abierta. It only states that the name Ovares was first found in Cuba in the 19th century, in the province of Matanzas. If you can give me some date and town/city, I may be able to find more.

Is Msgr. Alberto Martin Villaverde a family member? I have not been able to find a biography, only scattered information, mostly about his priesthood, nothing about his family. You may want to contact Revista Ideal at idealpress.com and ask if they have published his biography. An Auxilary Bishop of the Diocese of Miami, Msgr. Agustin Roman, a frequent contributor to the magazine, was ordained by Msgr. Martin Villaverde. He may have the information you seek. I hope some of this helps.

I have the Tapanes book. I looked for the name Ovares and did not find anything. I do have some other books from Matanzas, which I would be glad to search for you.
