Yes, it is me again. Questions: Then the deed is different from the cert.? There are 3 of these two on John A. Williams #1538/#751 yr. 1847 I wondered how he could have received land bountry when he was too young to serve in REV WAR. Didn't know they gave land for military from Indian War's? The land # 3401 1847 James Williams. At this time James Williams died 1836. Could a wife/or sons received land from a fathers service?
Pike Co. has been a wonderful help in reseach.

I am assuming this is Karen. The bounty land warrant was in 1847 for the following land Township 11North, Range 19 East, Section 2 NW1/4 of SE1/4 for 41.902 acres dated 8/30/1849 and the number is #751. This was the St. Stephens land office. With this info you can order a copy of the deed from BLM and it will tell you what war he fought in. With that you can order his application from the National Archives and see what info he gave them.
As well as the GLO/BLM records, there are a number of Pike Co. land transactions in the 1820's, 1830's and 1840's for a John A. Williams and a James Williams .. Looks like most of them were in Township 11- North.. This would have been in the north central 1/3 of Pike County ...

In the 1840's and early 1850's the Federal Govt. gave free "Bountyland" to men who could prove they had been in the War of 1812, also men who had served in the Creek Indian Wars in the 1830's .. The amount was 80 acres for an enlisted man and 160 acres for an officer ... I had two great -grandfathers that collected on this .. One of them was in the Indian War 1835-37 and got 80 acres .. The other was in the war of 1812, and also was in the Ala. Militia during the Indian War, he got two 80 acre sections ..

In the 1830 Census Of Pike Co., Alabama there was :

James Williams - Head of Household:
Males 5 to 10- 1
" 60 to 70- 1
Females 5 to 10- 1
" 10 to 15- 2
" 30 to 40- 1

Next Door Was :

John A. Williams - Head of Household
Males 1 to 5- 1
" 20 to 30- 1
Females 1 to 5 - 1
" 20 to 30- 1

You might check out the Ala. Revoluntionary War Veterans on the ADAH ( Ala. Dept. of Archives & History) website ..

Bill Huggins
Charlotte, NC

Does anyone in Pike Co. have access to Heritage Quest that might could look up a Military Land Warrent on the James/John A. Williams family? I'd be glad to send the land discription BLM told me there are three of these issued in 1847. National Archives in DC sugguested they might be online but I don't have access to it where I live.
Hello Vicky,

Thank you so VERY, VERY much! I don't know how to express my gratitude to you for taking the time to type all of that out! This helps confirm the location of my extended Edwards family back to Chester Co., SC, and likely tie them into another prior generation for certain.

I realize that you're not related, but will mention here for the benefit of any future Edwards researchers, that I feel certain that Joseph's wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Scogin (Scoggin), daughter of William and Sarah Scogin of Chester Co., SC. Sarah Scogin, after the death of husband William, married William Wall and they, with grown children moved to Montgomery Co., AL. Joseph Edwards had a brother, Jesse Edwards, who died in Montgomery Co., AL. Jesse was married to Rebecca Scogin, sister to Elizabeth.

Again, thank you so very much for this detailed and thorough reply! I am eternally grateful!

Warmest regards,

Jim

Jim, I found the below in the Papers of the Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society, Vol. XXXVII, Nos. 3&4 1998 -- Abstracts from General Estates Books 13-19, 1823-1880

Edwards Joseph -- Book 15, pages 620-644
Estate Settlement
Exe: William S. Edwards, son of deceased, appointed on Mar. 23, 1830. Signing the bond as sureties were William E. miller & James H. Marler. The will, on Pages 620-623, was dated Feb. 1, 1830 & witnessed by Moses Mills, Seaborn J. Mills, J. H. Marler & William S. Edwards. In his will Joseph Edwards left his wife Elizabeth all his household & kitchen furniture, working tools, a wagon, a mare, a yoke of oxen, her choice of 2 cows & calves, all his hogs, her choice of 7 sheep, all his corn & bacon, & 3 slaves. He also left some personal prperty to his children & a granddaughter.

Heirs: Elizabeth edwards, widow; Mary Foreman, daughter of the deceased, Stourton(?) Edwards, son; Sarah Walker, daughter, Harriet McReary or McCreary, daughter, William S. Edwards, son, Eliza L. Edwards, daughter, George W. Edards, son, Jonathan J. Edwards, son, & Rebecca K. Dickinson, granddaughter of the deceased.

On Nov. 23, 1830, in Chester Dist., SC, Harriet McCreary, daughter of Joseph Edwards, late deceased of Alabama, & wido of Samuel McCreary(Jr.?), legally appointed John McCreary(Jr.?) to obtain all her share of the estate of her father. Witnesses to this power of attorney were John Howze & Jon McCreary.

Slaves: Moses & women Binah & Rose, bequeathed to the widow, Elizabeth Edwards; woman Ritter (Rita), bequeathed to daughter Mary Foreman; man Harry, bequeathed to son Stourton Edwards; boy Lewis, left to daughter Sarah Walker; boy Simipson, left to daughter Harriet McCreary; man Frank, bequeathed to son William S. Edwards; woman Nelly & child Adeline, left to daughter Eliza L. Edwards, by Stephen, left to son George W. Edwards; man Nelson, left to son Jonathan J. Edwards & girl Martha, left to granddaughter Rebecca K. Dickinson. One boy slave -- it must hav ebeen Isaac -- was sold for $20. At one point Joel Dickinson hired the slave Nelson, & Elijah Foreman hired th slaves Harry & Ritter & her children.

Vicky Carroll
McKinney, TX
(no relationship to Edwards family)

I have a reference to the death of Joseph Edwards in Pike Co., AL in 1830 and would like to know if there is any type of Will or Estate settlement for him.

Does anyone have access to an abstracted Will book or Index for Wills or Estates and would be willing to do a lookup? I would appreciate any leads. His wife would have been Elizabeth, and they had at least one son, Williams Scogin Edwards. William Scogin Edwards married Eliza Ann Miller in Montgomery Co., AL in 1825, from what I see online.
Thank you!
Jim

Crenshaw County being formerly part of Pike and Covington counties (and others) also enjoys its stretch of the 3-notch Road. Joe R. Sport in his historical notes on early Crenshaw County says: "Of historical significance to the county is the Old Three Notch Trail, a military road which was to be used by General Jackson's troops. This road cut across the lower portion of the county near the present site of Dozier."
It is associated with the Friendship and Bullock communities in Crenshaw and with the Rose Hill area in Covington (across the river from Dozier).

Hi sharon, Thank you for the information, I suspected that was the case, when I started to find oout more about my grandmoother's side of the family. My mother always told us about our indian heritage, but she said it was on our grandfather's side. His name was James Monroe Dyer, We can't find any information on him. Not even his mom's or dad's names. We were told that our ggg grandfather was Chief Barefoot of the Cherokee Indians. But I had no way of confirming this. Have you ever heard of the legend of Him killing a bear with his bare feet. At any rates, I do have some geneology on the Lunsford and Barefoot family if you want to see what I have. I would really like to hear more about what you have. Thanks Henrietta Hicks

She was born on January 26, 1854 in Alabama. Who were her parents? I have seen her maiden surname spelled AKINS. One researcher whose e-mail address is 112171@sbcglobal.net gives her name as Francis Fannie Adline Aiken Waldrip. Was she later married to a Mr. Waldrip (or Waldrop)? I have that her husband Jessee Allen Colley lived until 1926 and died at Mountain Creek in Chilton Co. AL. Both were born in Alabama, and Cupidene's obituary indicates that she was born in Pike Co., Alabama - but does not list a maiden name.

J.D. was born abt. 1917, Cupidene 2 Jan 1919 (died 9 Jan 2004 in Winter Haven, Florida).

They had at least five children: Robert Harold, Carolyn, Phillip, Royce Hayward, and Earl. At least three children were born in Alabama before the family relocated to Hillsborough Co., Florida in 1945 per Cupidene's obituary and the 1945 Florida Census.

Any information would be helpful, I have so far been unable to confirm Cupidene's maiden name or J.D.'s acutal name.
Sorry to respond several years later to this, however I have only been researching my family lineage since 2007, and recently from an older family member, learned of the naming of two of my great aunts, daughters of George M. Alston. George M. was the son of Elizabeth Sanders Alston, and his daughters were named after his family - Lila Dennis Alston named after Elizabeth Dennis, and and Willie Maude Alston, named after William Henry Sanders. "William" or "Willie" and "Dennis" appear in my family in various combinations for three more generations. George's oldest daughter was Mollie or Mary Elizabeth Alston. George M.'s older brother was also named William H., and George's middle name - believed to be Madison, is also the middle name of his mother's brother, William Madison Sanders. (None of these names appear in the known Alston lineage for my family, George Washington Alston and Elizabeth Sanders) Hope this helps some to tie in Elizabeth Sanders Alston with WHS and Elizabeth Dennis.

I am trying to identify if there is a linkage between Wile Livingston, b 1860, in Pike County, and the family of William Livingston and Ann Berry who moved to Pike County from South Carolina. Both of these families lived near each other in northern Pike County. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Jack Hataway
