I am trying to find out information on my 5th Great Grandfather Capt. Jonathan Kemp. He moved from N.C. to St. George Parish ( now Burke County ) Ga. about 1768? I understand he acquired 100 acres of land on Rocky Creek on Sept. 1771. He met and married my 5th Great Grandmother Sally Patsy Womack there. I understand that he owned two plantations in Georgia, one he sold to John Callahan and the other he sold to Stephen Johnson of Georgia. I would like to know where the plantation was located and see if there are any pictures of them. I also understand that he also owned two plantations in S.C. and another one, maybe, is S.C. also. Does anybody know anything about these plantations. Thanks in advance for any help. Dianne

Hi, my name is Omar Leatherman. My mother's maiden name was Theodosia Bennyfield Leatherman.

I just happen to wonder on to this website and found your post. A little history that may help you.

From what I understand, my mothers family migrated from Burke County GA and moved to Detroit, MI where I was born. Not sure what year but probably around 1920. My mother had 5 brothers and sisters which, including my mother have all died more than 15 years ago. The names of her brothers and sisters were, Maggie, Alvin, Paris, Agnas and Bubba (which was a nick name and I can't remember his real name) all Bennyfield. There were only three children from these brothers and sisters of which two were from Paris (Donald and I can't remember the daughter) and myself.

That's all I can think of right now.

I live in Atlanta and have considered going to Burke County for years looking for members of the Bennyfield family.

Just to make sure there is no confusion, I am African American and I'm now 63 years old with two daughters and 5 grandsons. You can look me up on FaceBook.

Have been searching for Mary Hurst m ? to Elias Walter Mead (my g-gr parents). She died within 3 mos of giving birth to my gr mother (Mary Elizabeth Mead) in June of 1911 or 1913 (Granny never told the truth about her age). They also had 2 sons, Daniel Claude Mead & Elias Walton Mead.

All 3 children were raised by their older sister, Susan Amelia Mead Fries Sasser, in Millen.

Mr. Mead is buried there with his 1st wife, Mary Eliza Powell Mead. But Mary Hurst remains a complete mystery to us all. I think she may be the dau of Candacy Burke Hurst. Do you have any info to share?
Many thanks
Elaine Nelson

Looking for proof of which Joseph Attaway in SC and GA that was father of my William (also known brother David) who went to TN abt 1830 was married to Nicey Draper. Information I have on Joseph is that he was in Rev War at battle of Cowpens and was injured. I need his wife's name to separate the many Josephs located in this area at the time. I'm guessing he had to have been born between 1755 and 1765 to have been in that battle and that he died before 1850 census. I have several possible wives for the many Josephs, i.e. Jane Wilcox, Edith Nations,Goolspring Unknown.

I am looking for any info that can be gained about the Brown family that my 2nd Great-Grandfather Patrick T. "P.T." Brown and Mary Jane "Molly" Chance (1861-1946) belonged to.

As we have it, P.T. Brown (we think the "T' stands for "Thomas" but can't prove it) was born about 1853 and died in 1904. He married Mary Jane "Molly" Chance -- daughter of a John T. Chance -- about 1877. They had Jessie Milton Brown, 5 other sons, and 5 daughters. Jesse married Hilda Elizabeth Page (1897-1982). Jesse's son, Benjamin Frank Brown(1922-2002), was my paternal grandfather; he married Opal Inez Simpson (1927-1984).

When P.T. died, "Molly" took the kids into to Richmond county by train to find work and later remarried Charles Vencent Lemon (1858-1934). We have no knowledge of P.T.'s siblings or parents.

Other known relevant counties in GA for these people are Emanuel, Washington, and Johnson.

I am seeking anything and anyone that can help or is anyway associated with any of these people or their family members.

I am assuming that the Leroy Miller you are referring to is the son of William Henry and Nancy Cosnahan Miller and was born about 1878. I beleive he also was referred to as "Lee". If this is correct please provide whatever additional information, ie names, dates, children, etc that you can to fill in the blanks on this portion of our ancestry. I have no information on Leroy other than his approximate birth date and the fact that he was born in Georgia and lived in Burke County around 1880.

My information differs slightly from yours. James David Miller was indeed married twice. His first wife was Janie Freeman (1787-1843). James and Janie were married in 1836. They had four children as follows: John Frederick (b:4 Jan 1837), Leroy J (b:20 Dec 1839), William Henry (b:6 Feb 1841) and Josiah (b:19 Nov 1842). If your G-G-Grandfather was William Henry that would make you a decendent of James and Janie and not Miranda.

James David and Sarah A Miranda Mixon were married in 1844 and had nine children that I can document:

Thomas b:19 DEC 1845
Elizabeth J b:1 MAY 1847
Alexander b:19 DEC 1847
Marcellus b:12 JUN 1850
Frank James b: 28 FEB 1852
Stephen S "Coon" b:26 NOV 1855
Sarah E "Sallie" b:15 JUN 1857
Laura b:6 FEB 1859
Susan "Susie" b:5 Mar 1865

I have no records of Benjamin (1858) or Mary (1861)at this time.

I show William Henry Miller married Mary Cosnahan in Nov 1860 and having nine children. Who was your great grandfather? Do you still live in the Burke County area?

For what it is worth, within the past week I visited Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, GA and identified the family plots of Frank James Miller, Thomas J Miller as well as Josiah Miller.

If you have any additional information on the extended families of any of these individuals I would love to share/compare info with you.

I have James and Miranda having 10 children. Sarah Miranad Mixon was James David Miller's 2nd wife, I don't know his first wife but he had 4 son's before marrying Miranda. My G-G-Grandfather was William Henry Miller, James 3rd born son. Was your Frank James born about 1854 ?
The order I have....John Frederick abt 1837
Leroy J 1840
William Henry 1841
Josiah 1844

Miranda Elizabeth 1847
Thomas 1848
Alexander 1848
Marcellus 1850
James 1854
Stephen 1855
Sarah 1857
Benjamin 1858
Sallie 1859
Mary 1861

Robin,

I am also in direct line to Stephen and Susannah. James and Miranda had nine children I believe. One of their sons, Frank James Miller, was my great grandfather. Any information you have on Miranda's ancestors would be greatly appreciated, particularly related to her mother Jane McGowan. There are several gaps in this part of my family tree that I would love to fill in.

John Miller

We have a gazetteer from 1898 that said Barton was a railroad town in Burke County.

Was there a town called Barton in Burke County? Where is it now?

Thanks!

- Heather

Jonataon founded Coleman, GA, in Randolph County and she settled in Calhoun County and was a founder of Salem Baptist Church and is buried there. John Turner (my ggggrandfather) did not go to S.W.

I am looking for information on my family in the Burke County area. It appears that several generations of Millers were residents of Burke County from the mid 1700's until around 1875 when they moved to Augusta, GA. Some of the names I am researching are as follows:

- John Miller and wife Charlotte Gibbons
- Stephen Miller and wife Susannah Smith
- James D Miller and wife Miranda Mixon
- Frank James Miller and wife Mary E Callahan

I believe Frank Miller moved to Augusta around 1875 where he lived until his death in 1901. I also believe that he was in the wholesale grocery and cotton business with another Burke County resident, Zachariah Daniel from about 1880 to 1895. Any information on any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated.

Loretta I am so glad that it is solved. I knew that one of them were blind. My daddy said that the way his grandpa and his sister communicated was that they sat and held hands and did sign language. Daddy said that she was a beautiful woman. Your cuz.... Joan

SOLVED!
I looked at the 1880 Census--it was William Morgan Barber's younger sister Martha that was also blind.
Martha was 7, William was 12. Both were listed as Deaf and Dumb--I hate that term- But what is weird is WHY would they mark that column and not the one for "Blind? I guess back then it didn't matter?
I looked through every census on Rosie and she was never marked for either. But Martha was in the 1880 census. (The one where Urbanas was listed as Irvin Barber and Joanna was listed as Elizabeth.)

Loretta I dont understand it. My daddy said that a sister of his grandfather was blind. His grandfather was Willie Morgan Barber who was the son of Urbanus and Joanna. Willie Morgan Barber was deaf and dumb. Maybe we or I am confusing Joannas children with her siblings. But daddy always talked about his grandpa talking to him on his hands. And one of Willie (his grandpa) had a sister was blind. I think I will look closer at the census and further investigate this. My grandmother was Effie or Ephie Barber. Joan

I have an update--Rosie Barber Bryant--daughter of Joanna Lively, was NOT blind. My grandmother said she did not recall her being blind--said she specifically remembered her walking around and doing chores etc with no problem. I have a photo of her and she is wearing glasses--seemed like regular seing glasses. I spoke with Rosie's grandaughter, Dorothy Stephens, who told me that Rosie was not blind. She remembers her and said she was never considered nor acted blind. So for me, that clears up the question of her eyesight.
