I'm researching the Burnett's of Jones County, GA in the 1800s. Washington Burnett, born in 1808 or 1807 is the key individual to unlock the ancestry puzzle. He moved to Taylor County GA in the early 1850s. I'm trying to get his early history, especially parents and family.

Nehemiah Dunn's grave is in a clearing of tall pines trees. It is also now the private cemetery of the current owner, descendants of the Hungerford family. Her parents and other family members are buried there as well as Nehemiah. There is a tree growing inside the big large carved stone fence. His slaves are buried all around him. Hehemiah's wife Mary (Murphy) Dunn was not seen buried with Nehemiah; She outlived Nehemiah, and I don't know where she is buried, but no evidence was seen here at this burial ground. This cemetery is located north of Gray, in a rural area of Jones County, Georgia: From the railroad intersection in Gray, travel north on GA Hwy 11 about 3.2 miles to Hungerford Road, and turn right. Travel about 5.2 miles to Shoal Creek Road and turn left. Immediately on your right is a well kept clearing surrounded by tall hardwood and pine trees. This is the burial site. The stone wall enclosed area is visible from the road. GPS is 33.11942, -83.53085 Hope it helps. Rich Dohm.

Wow! The message you have responded to is very old(2006). Thanks for your interest.

I have been trying for a long time to find the answers to the questions about Leonard T Nelson and Lurena Hudgins. I have tried to track other Nelsons and Hudgins living in the areas where the two were mentioned in census reports and the like. The only thing I have come up with is a John Nelson on the 1840 US census. He is found on the same page as Leonard and that really only makes them neighbors, without further proof. This John is old enough to be Leonards father or perhaps a much older brother.

I have used this John Nelson in my tree simple as a point of reference. I would like to prove that the 2 are related, but I have not so far.

Should you find any information on the ancestry of Leonard T Nelson or Lurena Hudgins I would be so grateful for your help.

Thanks, clarkj777

To answer your question. My branch of the tree is the second son of Leonard T Nelson, Ansel; then his son James L; his son Alonso Cornelius and then my dad.

My original research was to prove or disprove that there is a possiblility of Native American heritage in our family. My dad said that one of his grandmothers married a full blood Cherokee. Still trying to find out the truth.

There is one interesting name in the list Mary Gridderson. She married Thomas M Nelson; the first son of Leonard T. The Gridderson name is a complete mystery. There is no such surname that I have been able to find. All queries come back a dead end. Mary Gridderson Nelson would be your grandmother, not mine.

It also occured to me that Leonard T might be the Native American; since I haven't been able to find a father or mother. Native Americans often changed there names to Anglican names after the Indian wars. I have discovered that Leonardd T Nelson fought in many Indian wars. He could have possibly been an Indian as a scout for the American Army. Just guessing at the possibilities.

Any other information I can share; I will be glad to.

Would Emory Billingslea, late of Macon, Bibb Co., have been related. He and I were school mates in the late 1940s and '50s and were said to be related by the "old folks." My ancestors were Jones Co. Woodalls, Hardemans and Wilsons.

Other children in the Nicholas family were Justina, Louis A., Adam, John Henry, and Peter. Nicholas's wife and mother of the children may have been Hunetta.
OBIT
"A Tribute of Love"
On Sunday, September 6th, 1914, Mrs. Mary A. Willis died at her home near Salem. She had been sick just one week when the sad news passed from one to another all over the county that the death angel had taken her away. It caused great sorrow to every heart. She was seventy-four years of age, and had been a member of the Salem Baptist church since her early womanhood. To those who knew this good woman it would be useless for me to speak a word of praise, for those who knew her best loved her most.
Oh, how her loving and devoted husband, children and grandchildren will miss her sweet face and cheerful voice and her ever helping hand, for her very presence was a blessing to her home.
She leaves a heart-broken husband, two children, twenty-seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren to mourn her loss, but let us be resigned to the will of the Lord who doeth all things well.
When we see a precious blossom,
That we tended with such care,
Taken swiftly from our bosom,
How our aching hearts despair!

'Round the little mound we linger,
'Till the setting sun is low,
Thinking all our hopes have perished
In the flower we cherished so,
We call it rest, but not forever,
In a lone and silent grave;
Blessed be the Lord that taketh
Blessed by the Lord that gave,

In that bright eternal city,
Sufferings never, never come;
In his own good time He'll call us
To our rest at 'Home Sweet Home'.
-A Friend
--published in the Jones County News.

I have been researching my main line EVANS for many years in Twiggs County. All my dead ends are in Twiggs. I know that they married into the Crosby and VANN families. Haven't posted here in a long time and I noticed some new people so I thought I would try again. Also some of my Evans moved into Bibb County around the 1890's and later into Jones County.
ESPECIALLY interested in the family of David and Obediah Evans on the 1850 and 1860 census. Rufus Evans was my ggrandfather. I am probably related to every EVANS in Twiggs County and Jones County.

Do you happen to know the name of the book? I can check the local library's genealogy section for it if I know the name.

Beth

My nephew, Mike Buckner has a book on Jones County, GA. I will try and borrow it when I see him next time. Perhaps it would have information that would be of interest to both of us.

Rose

Hi Rose,

I am also a great great great granddaughter of Wiley and Judith Buckner. I have been to the Buckner Cemetery in Talbot County. I was hoping to find any cemeteries in Jones County that might have parents for Wiley.

I am descended from his daughter, Catherine Buckner Mullins. She and her husband, Roland, are buried in Geneva Cemetery along with her daughter, Carrie Derenda Mullins Benson ( Mrs. Henry J) and descendants.

I live in Hamilton, GA. It's nice to find distant cousins!!

Beth Callaway
