Marjorie Broome Stephens, 85, of Brunswick, formerly of Nahunta, died recently at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

One of six children, she was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Carl Jackson Broome (mother - Exie Lurline Cunard). Her brothers, Lee Broome and Dean Broome, were long-time owners of The Blackshear Times, her brother, C. J. Broome was a former owner of The Alma Times and her brother, the late Sherwood Mercer Broome, was the owner of The Cuthbert Times. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Edward Stephens, and by her son, Mark Stephens.

She was a graduate of Nahunta High School and Middle Georgia College. She had also attended the Atlanta division of the University of Georgia (now Georgia State University).

She was employed in the office of the late Ben Fortson, Georgia’s secretary of state.

She and her husband, Howard, an architect, had traveled extensively, he as an employee of the U.S. military, to Okinawa, Japan, Italy, Greece and other countries.

She was a member of the Nahunta Housing Authority while living in the Broome family home place in Nahunta. She was an avid bridge player.

She had been a resident of St. Mark’s Towers, retirement residences, on U.S. Highway 17 in Brunswick for several years.

Survivors include a brother, Linton Broome (Ruth), Atlanta and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, from the chapel of Pearson-Dial Funeral Home. The Rev. Darrell Joiner will officiate. Memorialization by cremation.

Pearson-Dial Funeral Home of Blackshear is in charge of arrangements.
