Owens - SC, NC, GA - Howell Owens - Reuben or Wiley Owens

Seeking information on HOWELL OWENS and his family. He was probably born in GA or SC somewhere around 1813. He may have been the son of Wily Owens (GA) or Reuben Owens (NC).

I am now thinking Howell was married twice. I think his first wife was Elizabeth Sanderlin ( his son, Jacob Marion Owens' death certificate lists "Miss Sanderlin" as his mother). Howell and Elizabeth had the following children: Jane b. 1842, Susan b. 1845, William b. 1849 & Jacob Marion b. 1857. I cannot find any of these children, except Jacob, after the 1850 census.

I think Elizabeth died between 1857 & 1860 and Howell then married Harriet Hawkins somewhere around 1863 (Howell was discharged from the Confederate Army in Jul 1862). Howell and Harriet had the following children: Selina b. 1865, James W. b. 1867, Kate b. 1875 and Fredrick Thomas b. 1876.

I cannot find any information on Howell or Harriet in the 1880 census. I found their children living with Archer and Rebecca Mitchell and they were listed as "adopted". Rebecca may have been related to Howell or Harriet.

I've been told Howell's father could be Reuben or Wiley.

Thanks - Rick Turner datwet3@yahoo.com

Re: Absilla Pender Gammon

My records also show that Absilla Pender was daughter of Drury Pender and wife Absilla Young, and a granddaughter of Dolphin Drew Pender and wife Absilla Norfleet. A number of the Pender family members moved to the Galveston area after 1850.

John Gammon was the illegitimate son of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather James Gammon (died 1838 in Halifax County) and Pheby Packer, whom James married later. In his will, James Gammon recognizes his sons John and Willie Packer, and henceforth they used the surname of Gammon instead of Packer.

John Gammon appears to be dead by the 1850 Census, as he is not listed with his family in it. In 1852, Pollard Edmondson was appointed guardian of John's two children Lamon S. and Della, and then Lawrence Pender (Absilla's brother) was appointed their guardian in 1854.

Pollard Edmondson shows up in Dallas County, Arkansas in 1870, my theory is that the marriage with Absilla did not last. Pollard had children of his own by his first wife Susan Howard, although his second wife was Martha Manning and Absilla was his third wife.

Halifax loose estates records indicate that Lamon Stuart (Stewart) Gammon died intestate in 1884. He still had some estate left in Halifax County, and the records indicate his only heirs were his mother (her name was not given, but she was mentioned), and Della Davis, whom we know was his sister. This record also mentions his family was living in Groesbeck, Texas in 1884.

James Gammon had previously been married to Abby Nicholson and had at least four children, and this is my line. This family was originally out of Norfolk County, VA.

I would love to share information with you.
David Gammon
thepinnacle@ec.rr.com

I have that Durry.Drewry was the son of David pender and Mary Crocker and was born in 1780? and died in 1857. Drewry was married to Abscilla Young in Bertie County, NC on 15 Aug 1776. They had 10 children and their Daughter married John Gammon 23 Oct 1844 and they had 2 children, Stewart and Dellah. My Info also says that Abscilla and John lived in Florida along with one of Abscilla's sisters named Dorothy Pender Holder. One of her brothers lived in Louisina. Joe Harris a Pender descendent.
Seeking information about Absilla Pender Gammon, born 1824 in Edgecombe County, daughter of Drury Pender and Absilla Young.

I know that she married John Gammon and had two children and then was widowed. She next married Pollard Edmondson, but shortly after (1860 Census)she turns up alone with her kids in Galveston, TX. She married twice more and died in Galveston in 1900.

I'm especially interested in any information about how/why she moved to Galveston, but any info at all will be greatly appreciated!

I refuse to believe there is no one in the great world of ancestry to help me find this place!

Here is what I have been told:
-It is located at the intersection of Edgewood Church and Stallings Road

Resting in the African American section of the cemetery, according to the headstone information I was given, are:

Roscoe Wooten 2.4.1891-8.27.1954 (husband of Rebecca Ann Edwards Wooten)

Margaret "Mag" Wooten Parker 6.8.1905-4.13.2001 (Daughter of Margaret Edwards Wooten)

Bruce Wooten Jr. (Jr. is headstone mistake) 3.7.1920-10.16.1991 (son of Margaret Wooten Parker)

James K. Edwards 3.8.1945-8.7.1991

Rev. Chesterfield Knight 7.25.1883-2.20.1947 (husband of Harriet Edwards Knight)

Harriet (Edwards) Knight 6.30. 1884-6.4.1943 (however she died in 1983) Daughter of Rebecca Ann Eason Edwards and Adam Edwards

Rebecca, wife of Adam Edwards 10.1857-8.1923 (daughter of Jane and Louis Eason)

Nora, daughter of Adam and Rebecca Edwards 10.1.1892-5.29.1921

I was told there is an older, less kept section of the African American section of the cemetery. I suspect there are other African American Edwards in this section based on the number of direct connections I found on this list. I also believe Margaret Edwards Wooten and her husband are in the older section based on accounts from their grandchildren.

If any of this sounds even vaguely familiar, please reply to my thread. I have found the other Edwards, previous owners and employers of the African American Edwards but no one else.

THE FAMILY:
Noah VINES(abt 1843- ) married Mourning PITT (abt 1845- ) on Dece. 29, 1866 in Edgecombe County, NC and had seven children Charles; William; John D.; Thomas; Allen (Major); John L.; and Joseph.

MY QUESTIONS:
I found my family listed in the 1870 Census for Edgecombe County.

This is the first time that I am researching an African-American family. I strongly believe this family was previously held as slaves in the same county. I intend to ask my questions as politely as possible, but message boards prefer concise questions.

If it is true Noah was a slave, should I assume he was given the surname of Vines by his master or took the surname once freed?

There was multiple Vines as slave holders in Edgecombe County. How do I determine which master/farm held Noah?

Were the birthdates, marriages or deaths of slaves accurately recorded? Or must I use the dates found later submitted by freed persons on their census reports, obits, etc.

Were slaves allowed to practice any religious ceremonies? In other words, would a church hold any records for me to research?

Noah was listed as Mulatto on some census'. Do most researchers assume the slave master was the father?

How do I find info of Noah's ancestors? How does one trace ancestry back to Africa?

If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate your guidance.

I will use your answers to guide me in my research for Mourning Pitt.

Again, I apologize if any of my questions seem insincere or ignorant. Please accept my apologies if I offended anyone.

Thank You for your help

This is my first African-American family that I am researching. I would welcome some help and some suggestions for resources that may help.

I am researching Noah VINES(abt 1843- ). He married Mourning PITT (abt 1845- ) on Dec 29, 1866 in Edgecombe County, NC.

According to census reports, they had at least seven children: Charles, William, John D., Thomas, Allen (Major), John L. and Joseph.

Some time between 1880 and 1900 they had moved to Bolivar County, MS.

There are a TON of books (including those on ancestry.com) on NC wills and deeds, and abstracts. They have helped me understand relationships and build my tree, as well as provided me with an idea of where my Barnes' resided. Of the states I have been researching, I have found NC to be the state with the most documentation, so you should find a lot of good stuff!

A good place to start might be the 16 trees I just found on rootsweb here for John Barnes and Christian Hare. Tom Rushing seemed to have a lot of documentation on land transactions. The research of other people can often lead you in your search. I notice there was also a land transaction in Nash County about 1787 involving a John Barnes who may or may not have been the same one. Good luck in your searching. Nancy Smith

Paula,

My name is Joe Hines and I live in Va. I come from a long line of Garretts that was from Edgecombe Co, N.C. until the year 1874 when most of them left for Kings Mountain, N.C. and became very well to do people. Some became Mayors of Kings Mountain some were well to do business owners, one even became the biggest wine grower and owner in the United States until the year 1940 when he died. His name was Paul Garrett and he owned the wine called Virginia Dare. You can see it on the internet.he became a billionaire in his day but lost alot of his fortune during the depression.

I'll see how Redden Garrett fits into my side of the Garret Family if at all and let you know.

What other Garrett Family members are you interested in?

If possible I'm loking for a couple of Garretts that lived in Edgecombe Co long ago.
Although I am not a Pittman descendant, I have gathered some information over the years on the Pittman family of Edgecombe County. I checked the 1900 and 1910 census records for Edgecombe, and find a John C. (then called John S.) Pittman in Edgecombe, with birthdates varying from 1895 to 1898. He would have been son of Joseph John Bisco Pittman and wife Frances Phillips, who lived in the northern end of Edgecombe. I can't be sure if this is the right person - but if you discover it is the same person, let me know, as I can help you out some.

David Gammon
thepinnacle@ec.rr.com

Thank you so much for sharing this link - specifically, for mentioning that you can view properties. I just had a great find for my McNair, Wimberly, & Battle research and just had to stay up a few more minutes to blog about it! You can read it at http://tinyurl.com/ljakgx.

Taneya

I found a map online of Edgecombe County in 1905 that shows the locations of the properties of many residents. It overlays a current day Google map so you can easily figure out where the properties are today. I thought it may be of interest to many of my fellow Edgecombe County researchers so I am posting the link.
http://www.lib.unc.edu/dc/ncmaps/interactive/MC_037_1905p.ht...

Joshua,

James Harding Pittman was my Grandfather and he indeed was a preacher. I was thinking of him this morning as it was Sunday and I was not attending church today. He had a great impact on many peoples lives to include mine. What exactly type of information are you looking for? If you have found any information I would also be curious to find out what you have discovered as obviously this traces back my ancestory as well :)

Chad Pittman

Re: Cemeteries in NC

So how did I find the other cemetery? I am sure it was not included in the 1980 survey, since this would have been an unofficial African American cemetery. The former Edwards slaves and their descendants are there. The last black Edwards descendant that I am aware of being buried there was interred around 2000. It was even suggested to me that the African American Edwards cemetery has two parts. One moderately upkept and another quite overgrown.

I have learned that William Bryant Edwards had owned the land. By looking at the headstones I could find, it seems a large majority of the members of my family on that branch of my tree have the exact same first names as the Edwards for whom they had worked (or by whom they had been owned). I was told by another ancestry member (that seems to be inactive) that he knew where my Edwards (Knights and Wootens) were. I even received a list from him confirming the names, and he added the dates on their headstones.

What other means can I use to find them?

This is located near the intersection of Stallings Rd (1615) and Edgewood Church Road (1614)in township #8 in Edgecombe county very near the county line with Pitt County. This cemetery was surveyed back in the 1980s. The name is not hyphenated; it is Bryant Edwards who was probably the land owner and most of people are Edwards and the death dates range from 1870s to 1922.

This appears to be the same location that you had in an earlier post, but those names of Edwards and Wootens are not in the survey. It is possible there are two different cemeteries near each other and only one was surveyed.
