Hi I am working on my ggrandpa's sisters and brothers. I'm trying to find their families and write them up for my family tree. I have been working on Sallie Jump married William Jacobs. These are the names I got of their children. I found in the 1930 census a grandson named John W. Northcutt living with William and Sallie. Was Carrie and Mary Ellen married to a Northcutt? I also have a grandaughter living with Sallie's parents named Julie Jacobs. Julie is never living in the household with Sallie and William. She was born before they got married and I don't know of another child of Simeon Robert and Margaret marrying a Jacobs. So do you know anything about that? I could use some help. Thanks Patti

To obtain a copy of a marriage record that took place in Caddo County, Oklahoma in the time period of interest to you, write to the county clerk's office.
County Clerk
POBox 1427
Anadarko, OK 73005-1427
There will be a fee, usually about $5-10.

Good luck!

Oklahoma doesn't have a statewide index of marriages for the time period of interest, so your search can take some tracking if you don't know the county. Do you know where the couple was in 1930? That place(s) would be a good one in which to start.
Not much online for OK marriages this late either.
Why do you need a marriage record? Are you looking for some specific information that y ou hope will be on the marriage license?

well....that is the best that i have in my records...people don't always put out an obit because the newspapers now charge several hundred to put them in these short death notices are free. From them you can at least get the spelling of the town (EUFAULA) and the county and get a death cert. from the funeral home or an offical one from the state. Either way it is the best that I have...your welcome.......

Checotah High School - 100 years

Student graduates 100 years after relative

By Cathy Spaulding
Phoenix Staff Writer

CHECOTAH — Bertha Reed and six classmates were part of Checotah High School’s first graduating class in 1909, family members say.

Reed’s great-grandson, Grayson Schuering, will graduate with 18 times as many classmates, approximately 116, when Checotah High School’s Class of 2009 graduates at 8 p.m. today at Ogle Field.

The school is marking the 100th anniversary with a bronze plaque bearing the names of Reed’s class on two small rows and the names of Scheuring’s class on four lengthy columns.

Schuering, who grew up in Checotah, said his great-grandmother must have had a close bond with her classmates.

“I definitely feel very close with my classmates,” he said. “But I run around with eight or nine people.”

The 2009 senior said he does not know much about his great-grandmother other than that she came from Muldrow and taught school in Checotah. He said Bertha Reed had five girls and two boys in her 1909 graduating class.

Scheuring’s grandmother, Sarah “Emmy” Stidham, said her mother grew up to become a teacher.

One of Bertha Reed’s classmates, Effie Griffing, was the mother of Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II correspondent and former Muskogee Phoenix reporter James Lucas. The Checotah library is named for him.

“My mother was his godmother,” Stidham said.

“She came here when she was 1-year-old from Muldrow, crossing the Canadian River in high tide in a wagon,” she said. ”She was a very southern girl. She went to what is called a subscription school.”

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society Web site, subscription schools in pre-statehood Oklahoma were funded by a monthly tuition fee parents paid to teachers. Native American children could go to subscription, mission or tribal schools while blacks and whites could only attend subscription and mission schools, the Web site said.

After graduation, Reed attended a normal school, or teacher’s school, in McIntosh County and later went on to attend and teach at what is now the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Stidham said. Reed taught at Pryor and Checotah.

“She did not marry young,” said Stidham, who graduated from Checotah High School in 1945.

Stidham, whose daughter now teaches at Checotah High School, said she sees how valuable education has been to the community.

“There is a continuity here,” she said. “The people then had great scholars and took trigonometry, calculus. Every child was a member of a literary club and learned debate and public speaking. Administrators were here for 15-20 years.”
This year’s graduating class has more valedictorians, nine, than the class of 1909 had members.

One of this year’s valedictorians, Ryan Lane, said he sees a lot of interest in this year’s class.

“It seems weird that this year we celebrate the 100th anniversary because our football team did so well, as well as our band program,” Lane said. “At the San Antonio Music Festival, our band got best in class and our jazz band got best in class. Our (graduating) class got $1.4 million in scholarships this year.”

Grayson Schuering said Checotah continues to support the school.

“We get great community support,” he said. “They come out and support our athletes. We had a good football team and the community just jumped behind them the whole season long.”

High school graduations

• Checotah, 8 p.m., today, Ogle Field.

• Hilldale, 7 p.m. today, Hilldale Event Center.

• Fort Gibson, 7 p.m. today, Fort Gibson gymnasium.

• Haskell, 7 p.m. today, event center.

• Porter, 7 p.m. today, field house.

• Webbers Falls, 7 p.m. today, event center.

• Hulbert, 7 p.m. today, Rider Field.

• Tahlequah, 7 p.m. today, Doc Wadley Stadium, Northeastern State University Tahlequah Campus.
• Okay, 7:30 p.m. today, school auditorium.

• Braggs, 7:30 p.m. today, new gym.

• Muskogee, 7:30 p.m. May 29, Indian Bowl Stadium.

Reach Cathy Spaulding at 918-684-2928

Grayson Schuering, a senior at Checotah High School, holds a plaque commemorating the schools 100th graduating class.
I am a decendent of one of Erastus's uncles. My family stayed in Deerfield township, Tioga county, PA. I have found that Erastus Judson Howland was buried in Howland Family Cemetary in Warner, Oklahoma.

If you have any information as to why Erastus joined the Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, Confederatcy? Did our family have Native blood in them? Is this why he joined the Cherokee Regiment or was it for personal reasons?

I wont be on this account for long, so please direct any information to my e-mail...temeyok@hotmail.com.

Thanks again and I hope this answers your question.

Family bands together to clean up cemetery

May is the month for mothers and memorials, and one family has gotten a head start.

Helen Jackson of Brush Prairie, Wash., said, “The first time we saw the Bradshaw Cemetery was in the year 1998. The first burial was in about 1920 and the last in 1951. The cemetery was in the middle of a cow pasture on the old Bradshaw property in the Sycamore community northeast of Vian.”

Jackson and other members of her family banded together to clean up the cemetery recently.

She said, “It was hardly recognizable as a cemetery, and the graves were covered with brush, vines, weeds and trees that were growing around headstones. It was worse in the summer when everything was leafed out. Dixie Jackson and Booze Ballard had erected a fence in about 1960 but now cows had pushed the rotten corner fence post down and were trampling on the graves.”

Jackson said her family travels from Washington State each year to visit the area and the cemetery.

“Each time we visited the cemetery it was heavy on our hearts to restore the cemetery in respect for the kinfolk buried there. We also knew because of chiggers and ticks we could not undertake this job in the summer,” Jackson said.

The family then decided to take a different tack, and work on the cemetery before bugs and growth outnumbered them.

“The first of this year,” she said, “we were afforded the opportunity to travel to Sallisaw in February. After 10 years we could finally restore the cemetery. Family members, two of them traveling from Texas, volunteered and the Cherokee Nation sent a crew from their Natural Resource Department to help us. They used their GPR machine to help us find all the graves. After a week of pulling weeds, clearing brush, and falling trees we were finally able to erect a new chain link fence around the cemetery.”

The goal of the family was to remember those buried there, and return the cemetery to the point where it was no longer considered abandoned.

“The daffodils that had been growing over the graves could now see the sunlight,” Jackson said after the clean up. “Flowers were placed on graves and we could go home knowing that this cemetery was no longer considered abandoned.”

Jackson thanked those who assisted with the clean up.

She said, “I want to thank everyone who helped us with the Bradshaw Cemetery restoration. The following are descendants (and their wives) of Jim and Clara Sanders Jackson.”

Descendants include:

—Bo and Donna Webster

—Carlton and Jean Jackson

—Jim and Louise Jackson

—Dwight Jackson

—David Jackson

Others thanked by the family include:

—Sam and Rhoda Craighead

—Ricky Craighead

—Butch Garner and his crew from the Cherokee Nation Natural Resource Department

—Willard Mouse and Jamie Hothouse for running the GPR

—Rick Agent of Agent Funeral Home for the grave marker

—Green Acre Village for the fencing

—Mr. Williams

—Will Chavez and his photographer Roger for the article on the cemetery restoration

—Cherokee Nation Council for approving the restoration grant

—Sam Ed Bush, Janelle Fulbright, Kathy Nelson and Crosslin Smith for the advice in helping finally accomplish this project

Jackson said, “If I have missed thanking anyone who helped me I apologize. I am grateful to everyone that helped in whatever way.

“Most of all I would like to thank my husband Randy, the grandson of Jim and Clara,” Jackson said, “who put up with me for the last 10 years while I did my research on the families buried in the Bradshaw cemetery. Thank you all and God bless each and everyone of you.”

Well, it looks like this thread is over 10 years old but it is posted as anonymous, so I cannot contact the author directly.

Sarah Almedia Allen Berry had one additional child: Minnie Berry. She is listed on the Dawes Rolls as the child of Almedia Berry and Samual A Berry.

I am actually searching for information on Minnie myself, so I cannot be of too much help to anyone. She is my great great grandmother, but she was not close with her family.

PRESENTATION-MAY30, 2009

The Henryetta Historical Society has just confirmed a date and time for a presentation
on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. (But people can come and go as they wish.)
It's about the History of Hoffman, and it includes a section on the formation of the
Hoffman Cemetery back when Hoffman was still in Indian Territory before Oklahoma was a state.

Its a free presentatation that will be put on in Henryettta at a meeting room in the
Pig Out Palace Restaurant, right off Interstate 40.

avery nice PowerPoint show, one that anyone interested in Hoffman will really enjoy.
It'll begin with the story of how Hoffman got started and continue up through more current times.
People who know about the town are going to like it a lot. I think it'll be a lot of fun.
LOCAL HISTORIAN TO SPEAK

Through the generations: Group plans to hear from local historian

By Kandra Wells
Staff Writer

For years, Robert Pulse heard stories about his family and its background. Like many, his ancestral record was handed down through the generations by word of mouth and small tokens archived in a shoebox.

And as with many, his retirement coincided with the time and resources for some serious research into where, and who, he came from.

“My wife and I are budding young genealogists,” Pulse said this morning of the research bug that has bitten both he and his wife, Diane.

They are officers with the Pittsburg County Genealogical and Historical Society — he’s vice president and she’s secretary — donating their time and efforts to an industry they have pursued for years.

“You know, you collect shoeboxes of the stuff, you sit down and listen to your aunts tell you stories,” Robert Pulse said.

“For about a one-year period, we took our fifth-wheel to cities where our families came from. We’d pull up to a library and spend a week or two. Invariably, when we walked in there, we would find out something about our families.”

The Pulses retired to the McAlester area several years ago to be near Lake Eufaula, although Diane’s father’s family had lived in the area years earlier.

“His father was a lineman for the Katy Railroad,” Robert explained.

McAlester’s own history is largely based on the Katy, as local historian Dr. Thurman Shuller will tell you. Shuller is the author of a number of articles chronicling McAlester’s history and one of its founders, William Busby.

The historian will be speaking at an upcoming open house of the Pittsburg County Genealogical and History Society Library set for May 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the event, Shuller will autograph copies of the fall 2008 issue of “Chronicles of Oklahoma” on his article recounting Busby’s contributions to Pittsburg County.

“Dr. Shuller will speak to anyone willing to listen about Busby,” Pulse said. “He’s volunteered to talk about Busby until he gets completely worn out.”

The library is at 113 East Carl Albert Pkwy., right next to the Pittsburg County Courthouse that is now under renovation. That’s appropriate, since the courthouse was once “the grandest hotel west of the Mississippi,” Robert Pulse said, referring to the building once known as the Busby Hotel.

Busby also built the Busby Theater and the building that now houses the Historical Society, which at the time was Busby’s office complex for his coal mining, railroad and other business activities.

In addition to information about Busby, visitors to the open house will see library updates thanks to a recent grant and donations from society members and others.

The library houses a collection of more than 3,500 books and documents, including rare items unique to Pittsburg County as well as items for historical and genealogical research from several foreign countries and other counties and states.

Also planned during the open house is a drawing for a door prize valued at more than $100.

The society is a non-profit education society formed in 1979, and is funded with a combination of membership dues and document sales, and celebrates 30 years of service this year. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in historical or genealogical research.

The Pittsburg County Genealogical and History Society organization meets monthly on the first Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Genealogical Library.

For more information on the organization visit http://www.pittsburgcogenealogical.org/

Contact Kandra Wells at kwells@mcalesternews.com
Re: Rev. John Harrell

Recently I came across the following information on Rev John Harrell - there is also a photo of him in the book:

Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 11, No. 1, March, 1933 NECROLOGY Reverend John Harrell Born in Perquimmans County, North Carolina, October 21, 1806, and died on December 6, 1876, at the age of seventy years, one month, and seventeen days. Licensed to preach in 1823, when but seventeen years of age, and received on trial at the Tennessee Conference, commencing on November 22, 1827, at which he was appointed as junior preacher on Wayne Circuit with the Rev. Jeremiah Jackson, in charge, being called the Western District of the Tennessee Conference and comprising that portion of the state lying between the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers, sparsely settled and having from 25 to 30 appointments or places for preaching, held either in private houses or in the open air. Most of the private homes were one room log houses, to serve as kitchen, parlor, bedroom, and chapel. These pioneer settlers were all poor. The rides were long and the exposure great. The forests through which he had to pass were dense, with creeks to be crossed by swimming. Privations and sufferings were great. At the Conference of 1828, held at Murfreesboro, Tenn., John Harrell was appointed assistant or junior preacher on Cypress Circuit, Joshua Boucher, presiding elder, Wilson L. McAlister in charge, who was at the time of his death a member of the Indian Mission Conference. At the conference held in Huntsville, Alabama, in November, 1829, John Harrell was admitted into full membership in the conference, ordained a deacon and appointed junior preacher on Sandy Circuit, with R. K. Hudson in charge. In 1830 he was appointed to Beach Circuit. At the conference in 1831 volunteers being called for mission work among the Indians, John Harrell, Andrew D. Smith, H. G. Joplin, W. A. Boyce, W. G. Duke, J. N. Harrill, A. Baird, and A. M. Scott, as such volunteers were transferred to the Missouri Conference, which at that time included the Territory of Arkansas and missions among the western Indians, John Harrell being appointed to Washington & Cherokee Mission, with A. M. Scott as assistant, said Mission being located in the northwest part of Arkansas Territory. Here commenced the mission work which he continued as long as he lived. In 1836 when the Arkansas Conference was organized, on account of location, of his then work, he remained in the Arkansas Conference until 1850, when he was transferred to the Indian Mission Conference which had been organized in 1844. He filled different positions of circuit and station preacher and presiding elder. When transferred by Bishop Paine to the Indian Mission Conference he was placed in charge of Fort Coffee School, where he remained for four successive years as superintendent. For the year 1854-5 he was presiding elder of the Choctaw District and for seven years (1855-62) of the Cherokee District. For three years (1862-5) he was Superintendent of Army Missions. For 1865-6 he was Presiding Elder of Cherokee District. For three years (1866-69) he filled the appointment of Superintendent of Missions of Indian Mission conference, traveling from one district to another and from one part of the Western territory in which the Plains Indians were located to other parts, using all of his powers to sustain, arouse and revive the then drooping spirits of the Church in the Indian country. In 1869 he was Presiding Elder of the Choctaw District. In 1870-71 he was Superintendent of Asbury Manual Labor School at Asbury Mission, the buildings of which had been burned. Under his leadership same were rebuilt. In 1871-72 he was Presiding Elder of the Creek District, and 1873-6 of the Cherokee District. During 1876 he was appointed Superintendent of Asbury Manual Labor School, being occupied at this post with other duties, at the time of his death. During the time that he was a member of Indian Mission Conference, from 1850 to 1876, inclusive, he was in charge of schools six years, presiding elder of different districts fifteen years, superintendent of Army Missions three years, and superintendent of Conference Missions for three years. He was elected and served as delegate to the General Conference four times from the Indian Mission Conference, and three times from the Arkansas Conference, being a member of the Conference at Louisville, Ky., which organized the Methodist Episcopel Church, South. For twenty-seven years, in succession, he devoted his energy to its utmost to the improving of the condition of the Indians. Practically every church organization from Red River to the Kansas Line and from the Arkansas line to the extreme points west had been visited by him. For eighteen years prior to his transfer to the Indian Mission Conference he traveled over what was at one time the Territory of Arkansas and afterwards the State of Arkansas from one side to the other and visited in practically every neighborhood. With a strong body he made his appointments expecting to be able to fill them. Though many miles apart, through prairies, forests, mountains and over streams, these appointments were with few exceptions filled by him. Neither railroads nor steamboats were available for his travel; neither could buggy nor wagon pass over the Indian and pioneer trails; but on horseback from appointment to appointment he traveled for forty-nine years. He participated in either directly or indirectly during that period every religious movement among the Indians in the western territory. Social though never light in conversation, serious but never repulsive, conscientious in the discharge of every duty, he endeavored to benefit and do good to all. He was married in Washington County, Arkansas, in 1832, to Miss Eliza Williams, who died on November 20, 1876, preceding him to the grave about a month. Nine children were born to them, seven of whom preceded him in death. Two daughters and two grand-children survived him. At times when the Bishop could not hold the conference he was elected presiding officer of the conference, and on other occasions secretary. At times during his life he maintained a home at Van Buren, Arkansas. Dr. McAnally in his writings states that John Harrell "Was a good man, an humble, meek, pious, godly man, devoted to his work and faithful in its performance; and there are none who will longer remember his life nor more deeply regret his death than the Indians he served so long so faithfully."* He and his wife are buried at Old Asbury Mission Cemetery, whose graves are marked. —R. L. WILLIAMS.
Headstone renovations anger Yukon widow

Associated Press - February 22, 2009 6:35 PM ET

FORT GIBSON, Okla. (AP) - A Yukon woman is complaining after visiting her late husband's grave at Fort Gibson National Cemetery and learning his headstone had been moved.

Loretta Hensley says she was appalled when she saw workers at the cemetery moving headstones. The 67-year-old woman says she believes her husband's grave has been desecrated.

But cemetery director Timothy Spain says he's not sure what all the fuss is about. He says the cemetery is undergoing a $400,000 renovation to realign headstones to meet "national shrine standards." He says so far 1,000 headstones have been moved from the top of the grave to the center of the grave.

He says Hensley's is the first complaint he has received.

Spain says he offered to excavate Hensley's coffin to show the family where the headstone is actually positioned on the grave.

There are more than 60,700 graves in the cemetery.
I see you are new to the site, so here is a tip. When you ask for help, put the pertinent information in so a person can just pick that up and check things out for you. Most do not want to have to write back and forth to obtain the information that can help you. Subject areas are a great place to put the name(s) you are looking for. Ambiguous posts usually are skipped over.
