Have you checked with the Hugenot Society in Charleston? Or, have you checked with the Bonneau Society (NOT to be confused with the Royal Bonneau group). They have the family tree all the way back to the 400s in England. My GGrandfather was Arnoldus Bonneau and his brother was William. Their father William Henry moved to Mobile pre Civil War. I'll have to look at what I've got at home, but since you were raised in Mobile I'm wondering if you belong to one of his 14. However, the Governor Bonneau was, I think, a generation older than Henry.

So your Joseph can't be Joseph Shewen 1742 - 1800 married to Ann because he was dead before Elizabeth was born in 1816.

He was the son of Joseph Shewen 1713 - 1788 & Mary Howell.

Unfortunately, I think my Shewens are not linked to your Shewens. But if you have come across any links to Mansel, Selfe or Vanderhorst then it would be the same Shewen.

Good hunting !

Neil

Hi Thanks for your very speedy reply. No, I don't know who Elizabeths parents where, as I couldnt find any other Shewen's on the census at all. William and Elizabeth had 7 children, 5 of which were born once registration was in force and on each of their birth certificates it says Mothers maiden name "Shewen". One says "Shewin". These entries were made by two different registrars, so I am hopeful that the name is correct. I did find a Joseph Shewen in parish records for Glynneath, and he seems a likely candidate as her Father, but I cannot find anything at all on him that could link him with Elizabeth.....oh well, back to the drawing board.
Thanks again for your help
Cheryl

I have no information on Elizabeth Shewen or William Owen.

Do you know her Father/Mother ?

If she was born 1816 then it's possible her parents were Commander Daniel Shewen R.N./Maria Ann Parker.

The only other male Shewen I have recorded that could be the father is Colonel William Shewen 1764 - 1840 who was the son of William Shewen 1740 - 1766 & Rebecca Bate 1744 - 1766 (they lived in Dacca).

Also you probably know that document accuracy in those days was not good. There is a family in the Swansea area with the surname Shewan....could this be connected ?

Hi
I was wondering if you had come across an Elizabeth Shewen born in Llansamlet (just outside of Swansea, Wales)in 1816. She "married" a William Owen presumably in 1835 although I cannot find any marriage for them, and have been looking for over ten years now. I have the birth certificates for all children that were born from late 1835 onwards, and they all clearly state that the Mothers maiden name was Shewen. These were a "low ranking" coal mining family, so I don't think they are tied in with the Thistleboon Shewen's, but you never know! Elizabeth stated on all census that she was born in Llansamlet Glamorganshire, and lived in Neath all of her adult life. This never varies. If you have come across her then I would love to hear from you. My email is ahluka@btopenworld.com
Thanks

Julius A (Adolphus) Murray-son of George Edward Allen Murray and Elizabeth Grooms

I am seeking information about my great grandfather Julius A Murray and my great great grandparents, George Edward Allen Murray and Elizabeth Grooms.

I found Julius' death certificate, which cites his birth Nov. 5 1858, and death Dec 5 1930. Father is listed as "Edward" Murray and mother Elizabeth Grooms. I'm assuming gggrandfather George used his two middle names a lot as given names.

I can't find Julius at all on the 1860 and 1870 Census records, when I figure he'd be living with his parents. Who was he living with?

But there's a Julious Murray that appears as head of his own house in 1880, citing that he was 20, and that would be about right.

Then I have census records for him and my great grandmother from 1900 to 1930. The earlier records showing my grandfather Clarence and his siblings.

Are there any bible records for Julius A. Murray? His siblings were Arthur H., George A, William M. Arnold D, and Mary Ann. Any others?

And if there's any other information related to this Murray line, it would be great to hear about it.

Also, any info on Elizabeth Grooms, daughter of Malachi Grooms? I can't find anything on the Grooms family.

Thanks so much.

Louise Murray-Pino

I am relatively new to the genealogical scene, but I have become quite fascinated with searching and finding out bits of information regarding my past. I am, however, stuck on a few key people. Here are the major points with specific reference to (what I believe is) my line:

James J. Sweatman (1754-1823)
(m) Mary ???
1a. Augustus Sweatman (1800-1986)
1b. Edward Sweatman (b. 1805)
(m) Ann ???
2a. Mary Sweatman (b. 1832)
2b. James Sweatman (b. 1836)
2c. Samuel Sweatman (b. 1840)
2d. Daniel Sweatman (b. 1842)
2e. Rebecca Sweatman (b. 1847)
2f. Amanda Sweatman (b. 1849)
2g. Dennis Sweatman (b. 1850)
(m) Jane Sweat (1845-1918)
3a. Barney Edward Sweatman (1875-1969)
3b. Emma Sweatman (b. 1877)
3c. Rufus Wesley Sweatman (1877-1960)
3d. Annette Sweatman (1878-1956)
3e. John Sweatman (b. 1879)
3f. Eli Washington Sweatman (1884-1966)
(m) Jennie Wells (1889-1962)
4a. Carl Alden Sweatman (1911-1970)
4b. Eli Washington Sweatman, Jr (1915-1996)
(m) Marguerite Case (1918-2004)
5a. Jennie Sweatman
5b. Eli Washington Sweatman, III (1949-2008)
1c. Stephen Amos Sweatman (1805-1864)

My father was Eli Washington Sweatman, III. My sticking points are related to several things: 1) where does the line go after (or in this case, before) James; 2) what can be known about the line of Jane Sweat; 3) what can be known about the line of Jennie Wells; 4) what can be known about the Case line; and 5) more generally: is this information correct?

I gave her certainly added significantly to the data that she already had.
The earliest Shewen reference I have is for William Shewen of St Mary Magdalen 1631-1695, a quaker and pinmaker. He's buried in Bunhill Fields Shoreditch, East London http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Env....
The only detail I have for Daniel is that he married Maria Ann Parker 31/01/1805 in Stonehouse Devon, she died 16/04/1829 in Mutley Devon and Daniel re-married Elizabeth Boulter 02/10/1829.
Known as Cmdr Daniel Shewen of Thistleboom R.N. he was the son of Daniel Shewen of Thistleboom 1747-1792; who was the son of William Shewen of Swansea 1711-1785; who was the son of Major William Shewen of Rhosgoch in Eglwys 1687-1756; who was the son of Joseph Shewen of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey 1664-1721; who was the son of William Shewen 1631-1695 (mentioned above)

Inside the fortress there lived a lot of Monks. That is where all the monks lived that taught in the shcools around the lowcountry schools and churches.

Thus: the name of Monks Corner. There are several derivities of this story, that I have heard over the years.
But the one my father told is more correct than any of the others.

He was born in Berkley County and to me he should know.

Madelyn DuBose Smoak

hi neil,
i have been sending julia a few bits of information on henry thomas shewen relating to his naval career which is my interest, the project i have been working on concerns henry thomas shewens brother daniel and his descendants namley his son and grandson who both had the name Edward thornborough parker shewen, the name originated through daniels wife who's maiden name was parker her brother was Edward thornborough parker a young captain in the british navy whose life was cut tragically short in 1801,he was aide de compe to admiral lord horatio nelson who looked on parker as a son, daniels wife's name was mary ann shewen(nee Parker)as i said both thier son and grandson carry the same name whilst i have found collecting information about thier son relativley straight forward thier grandson has been a bit more of a challange,i know he and his brother peyton shewen immigrated to canada in 1871,Peyton settled quickly at apsley,he married a miss annie eastland of peterborough, ontario and they had 9 children, unfortunatley his brother moved around a bit first to antogonishe, nova scotia then to st john's new brunswick my interest particually lies with him because i know he done a lot of family research into the thornborough side of his family having read an article he wrote that appeared in a publication called the western antiquary,i wondered if this side of the shewen family is familiar to you and if so would it concern etp shewen or any descendants.
regards richard

I believe it was built sometime just after 1900, but could be twenty or thirty years later.
Does anyone have any information? Thank you so much.

I am also researching the Bunch and Bull family connection. I have information related to Barbara's brother, Warren Bull, who married Rebecca J. Inabinet. She also had a brother named William Henry Bull (1820-1895)

I believe that their father was William Bull (abt 1782-died 1850's in Orangeburgh Co, SC)and their grandfather was Burnaby Bull (1754-died 1782-1790). This family line is closely tied to the Dantzler family as well.

I am still researching this family line and would like to compare information related to Barbara Bull who married John Bunch. The Bunch family is interconnected with many of the family lines that I am researching.

Sue Appleton jsappleton@windstream.net

Hello Dajiana,
Just found your post today about the Vanderhorsts, we are more than likly are related. Johannes Vanderhorst, born circa 1662, Rotterdam Zurid Holland, is my 8x times great grandfather, who settled in Sth Carolina... My line comes in via my 4x great grandmother Harriet Cooper Vanderhorst, born circa 1769, Sth Carolina, she married Henry Thomas Shewen, born 1st of April 1782, Thisleboon House, Glamorgan Wales, they were married 12th Dec 1803, St Marys Parish, Swansea Wales...
Most of the Vanderhorst family info i have i found myself, via the internet, i have the generations down from Johannes... I knew their was african american Vanderhorst's but no nothing of them, maybe we can help each other... The reunion must of been a big a event, as their are so many Vanderhorsts... The Vanderhorsts come from my mothers side, i also have african american ancestry, on my dads side as well, my great great grandfather John Jay Green, born circa 1824, Petersburg Virginia, is african american, he came out to Australia, circa 1850, he was a minner, and married a white girl, (unheard of) I know so little about him, i am sure i have relatives over there, but have, had no luck so far...
Would love to learn more about your Vanderhorsts, this is my email address: juliagiblin@yahoo.com.au
I live in Melbourne Australia..
Sincerly Julia.

My grandfather is Joe Vanderhorst and my great grandfather is Neal Vanderhorst. There are a lot fo african american people in our family and most of them are from south carolina. The grants state "Berkeley" but the land itself is actually in what is now Leesville in Saluda County (just a couple miles from town).

One was for 200 acres.
One was for 150 acres.
One was for 500 acres.

For what reason were people being granted land in 1772? Any tips greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Melanie Ward

Perhaps Major William was barracked in Wales ?

Joseph's father, William was born Bermondsey 1631 (date unknown) and died 28/03/1695 and is buried in Bunhill Fields, Islington,London, Sarah his wife dies 14/07/1678 and is buried in Southwark, London.

Bunhill Fields is an historic area, here's a link :

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/living_environmen...

This is an unconsecrated burial ground (not a cemetery) where dissenters and non-conformists were buried. Amongst others Daniel Defoe, John Bunyan, Richard & Henry Cromwell and William Blake are all buried here.

The Wales connection varies in area but is always around the south coastal region, Oystermouth, Swansea, Camarthen, St. Davids.

Re. Edwin Selfe, I have nothing further back than what you have already.

I'm having the same problem with Richard Hyder who I know lived and worked in Bristol around 1820's-1830's but I cannot find any definite details of his parents although I'm sure he originated in the south east of England.

For the Vanderhorst side, I have the Johannes (1662-1717) link and I believe he was related to Nicolaus van der Horst (1598-1646) an artist born in Antwerp, died in Brussel.

If you find a link between Johannes and Nicolaus please let me know. I have already posted in the Belgium and Holland section on this site, but no answers so far.

I will email you with any other relevant dates re. the above and any further information if I find any.

Regards, Neil
Hello Benita,
While on the Internet today, searching for my Shewen ancestors, i stumbled across your messages for the Vanderhorst/Shewen/Mansel/Selfe families, via Ancestry.com
Back to 2006, i posted a message, about these family names, but had no replys... My ggggg grandfather was Elias Vandehorst, born 28th of May 1738 Sth Carolina, his daughter Harriet Cooper Vanderhorst, born circa 1769, is my gggg grandmother, she married Henry Thomas Shewen, born circa 1782 Wales, they were married 12th of Dec 1803 at St Marys parish, Swansea Wales...Their daughter my ggg grandmother Jane Anne Mansel Cooper Shewen, born circa 1805 Swansea Wales, marrried my ggg grandfather Edwin Selfe, born circa 1810, Bristol, Somerset England...They were married 15th of April 1834, at Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucester England...Jane, had 2 sisters that i know of Ann Caterina Shewen, born circa 1813, and Georgiana Harriet Shewen, born circa 1814, both possibily born in Oystermouth? Wales...
I have the death certificates of Henry and Harriet Shewen, and of Jane and Edwin Selfe... I would love to learn more about my ancestors, on the Shewen Mansel and Selfe side, as i haven't been able to find who Henry Thomas Shewen's parents are? And no very little about the Mansel's and who Edwin Selfe's parents were? Have had much success in finding my Vanderhorst ancestors, gone as far back as Johannes Vanderhorst born circa 1662 Hollland...
My email address juliagiblin@yahoo.com.au
Cheers Julia....

Thank you for the information about the Llanelli connection with the Vanderhorst family.

I was especially pleased to receive the information about Rosa Caroline and Charles Courtney Rees - he was the son of John Rees (1781-1843)of Cilymaenllwyd, who I am researching at the moment

I have found a reference to Henry Thomas Shewen living at Vauxhall House Llanelli, so it seems he lived there as well as Thistleboon House in Swansea.

Kindest regards

Benita
