I have a copy of the "poor microfilm" you refer to. I am also interested in this family. I haven't pinned it down, but living next door, the William Campbells must be close relatives of the Jesse Campbells. If I can see correctly, I believe there is a Martha in the JC household. I am hoping that if it is, she may be the Martha Campbell whose mother was the sister of O'Bryant Trisvant Canaday, and who (Martha) married Porter Jackson in the 1860's or early 1870's. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Matilda married: 1st J. H. PENDARVIS of Colleton Co;
2nd John Henry SHOKES b. 1854 Charleston.
John Henry SHOKES' 1st wife was Josephine JOHNSTON b. 1857.

Matilda and J. H. PENDARVIS had the following children:

George R PENDARVIS ; b. Feb 1890

1870 Charleston CITY DIRECTORY

HARRISON, J K; c., 31 Bogard St.
HARRISON, Matilda; c., school, 31 Bogard St.

In Land Deeds of J H HARRISON, I have found the following names: Laura HARRISON, J S PENDARVIS, and Matilda HARRISON regarding land in Mauss Hill Plantation, Adams Run, Colleton Co, SC. The last deed granting 15 acres in Adams Run to Pompey JENKINS, dated 1893, has J H HARRISON's residence as Charleston.

Josephine JOHNSTON and Matilda HARRISON were suppose to be related. Matilda was also part Native American.

Any info is Welcomed ~

The two children were Henrietta and James. Henrietta married Calvin Carter. She lived in Colleton County.

Does this help?

I am still searching for information about my g-g-grandmother, whose name was apparently Mary Martha Campbell. According to a court case on file in the Colleton Co., court house, her name was Mary, although on the census records it is listed as Martha and she was probably called that. The court record establishes that her mother was the sister of O'Brian Trisvant Canaday, and that she (Mary) married Porter Jackson. There was no mention of her father or her surname, but the Sineath family book says that she was a Campbell. (One of their daughters married a Sineath.) The information it contains is not entirely correct; it says Peter instead of Porter, and says "Sennie" was born in Islandton. Actuallly, she was born on the old Wire Road near what is now Grover.
When the 1880 census was taken, A. E. Fralix and his wife, Minervia Campbell Fralix, lived a few houses away from Porter and Martha. We know that Minervia was the daughter of Jesse Campbell. I believe that Martha might also have been his daughter, but there is some confusion about how many times Jesse was married, and who might have been Martha's mother. (Again, according to the court case, Martha didn't have any whole siblings.) A Jesse Campbell was living next door to William Campbell in the 1850 census, leading me to believe they were related. If anyone has some good, clear research on this family, please share it with me. It would either confirm Martha's parentage or let me know I still have to search elsewhere.

I am related to the Campbells two ways. Henrietta Campbell Carter is my great grandmother and Mary Campbell Cummings 1898-1991 wife of Peter James Cummings 1883-1960 is my great aunt. Peter's family is from the Givhans/Ridgeville (wire road) area. The graveyard at Pine Grove II Baptist Church in Givhans has many Campbells and I am told by family lore they are related to my Campbells near Walterboro. I hope this gives you some more places to look.

Martin Campbell and his wife Elizabeth had four daughters on the 1860 census. Sara 8, Mary 6, Ann 4, Elizabeth 2, and my G-grandmother was on the way Henrietta. Do not know Martin's wife's maiden name.

The only children I was aware of was Henrietta and my G-grandfather, James Martin Campbell born December 16, 1862. I have some information on Henrietta her husband and their children. I do not know anything else about James Martin's family.
