I am seeking information about O'Bryan Trisvant Canaday and his family. There is an O. T. Canaday, 39 yrs. old, which would have meant he was born around 1821, listed in the 1860 Census of the St. Bart. Parish of Colleton County. He was a carpenter, and apparently living in the household of L. B. Canaday, 42, who was probably his brother. L. B.'s wife's name was Ann, and they had two children, Alice J., 12, and David N., 3. I believe this O. T. was O'Bryan.

Having been told that O'Bryan had a sister whose daughter married "a Mr. Jackson", because of the names of the children given, I am certain this Mr. Jackson was Porter Jackson and my g-g-grandfather.

If anyone has ANY information about this particular Canaday family or the daughter who married Mr. Jackson, PLEASE share it with me!

Thanks in advance!
Bettie Berry
BAuthor@aol.com
I am looking for anyone out there who may have a grandparent, great grandparent or other relative who may have known my grandfather Thomas STEPHENS, or my great grandfather whose name is said to have been Harry STEPHENS. Thomas and my grandmother Clementine Primus STEPHENS lived in the "Browntown" area of Hendersonville in Colleton County. We are somehow linked to other Stephens in the area who are descendants of Levi Stephens(son of Reuben Stephens) by way of his son Daniel whose mother was a slave named Judy, but we cannot seem to find out where our Stephens fit. Thomas' sisters and brothers are said to have been Fernando STEPHENS, Calip STEPHENS, Belle STEPHENS, Amy STEPHENS, and Mary STEPHENS (whose married name may have been Wikey or Wilkey).

I am also told that Thomas was a sharecropper on the land of Jim and Edie MIXON, and again on the land of Tom and Elizabeth BOYNTON.

I am also looking for information on the turpentine industry in the Walterboro or Hendersonville or Orangeburg area in the early 1920's, as I have been told that my grandfather was also in that industry. Whew!! Believe me, any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you...

My husband's grandfather, James Franklin Crosby is buried in a cemetery there, along with other Crosby members, we just don't know which cemetery. It is possibly a church or family cemetery. All that my mother-in-law could remember is that it was near a church, and it was kind of run down. This was in 1938.
Does anyone know the parents of Adam Franklin Fisk b. 1852 married Martha Jane Benton abt. 1871. I know he is listed on the 1920 census for Colleton, Lowndes, SC as a widow. Children of the above are:
Perry Washington Fisk
Ada Anne Phoebe Fisk
Susan Annie Fisk
David Franklin Fisk
Joseph Cornelius Fisk
Harmon Isaac Fisk

I have searched for two years and have come up with nothing but a brick wall. If any of these names tie in with your search, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for your help.

Nathalia

1850 census- Colleton Co SCGenWeb

Unfortunately, this is not an announcement that we actually, *finally* have the full transcription of the 1850 census of Colleton County. It's a call for help!

Here's my idea...if you have researched your family in the 1850 census, and documented the information in your files, would you transcribe it for the Colleton County SCGenWeb? I'm a firm believer that something is better than nothing. There is an surname index online, but if we could get transcriptions up, one family at a time, it would be great.

If you want to participate, you can either post to this list, with permission for me to use it, or send me an e-mail.

Thanks for all your help, and don't forget that we're always looking for transcriptions of deeds, wills, Bible records, etc. If you have those to contribute, I'd recommend copying them to the SCGenWeb Archives, too.

Pat Sabin
Colleton County SCGenWeb
http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/
There is no direct link. He could be an uncle. But, on the 1840 census he is listed as having two boys the right age to be Robert Jr and Seaborn. In 1850 Seaborn and Robert lived next door to each other. In 1860 Robert Sr lived next door to Robert Jr.

Robert Sr's wife is named Mary, and they first show up in Colleton county on the 1830 census (So they arrived in the 1820s).

My search dead ends here. I would guess that Robert is related to Fisks of Abbeville that left for the wild west, but i have been unable to find a link.
How can I obtain the history of Carter's Ford Baptist Church, people married and buried there and any other information on Carters from Colleton County? My great grandparents Berry Hasten Carter and Emma Carter are buried at Carter's Ford Baptist Church and I would like to know more about who the church was named for and be able to trace my Carter ancestors.

Thank you,
Barbara Carter Stoudemire

Edisto Island - Letters from dated 1848 and 1849

I have in my possession two letters from a woman named Susan who lived on Edisto Island. (She is no relation to my family, the letters were bought in a box lot many years ago.) The letters are to her Aunt Nancy Davis in Madison, Georgia. These are extremely interesting letters and I would like to identify the writer. She refers to her husband as Mr. E. She mentions her youngest child Rosa but refers to "the other children" also. I have checked the 1850 census for Edisto but the only "E" family is Edings (Eddings) and there is no Susan or Rosa listed. One of the letters says "my husband has talked of moving up to Charleston in the Spring"........so perhaps they did move on. Would appreciate any help or advice in this matter.

Noah Noel LANGDALE Jr., 87, of Atlanta died 23 Feb 2008

Longtime Georgia State leader Langdale dies

By KAY POWELL
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/25/08

Noah N. Langdale was tenacious in taking Georgia State University from a two-building college to a major university as its president from 1957 through June 1988.

"He set a pattern for Georgia State that continues today," said Marie Dodd of St. Simons Island. Dodd, who served on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for 14 years, was a student at Georgia State when Mr. Langdale became president.

"I watched him wrestle that school out of the concrete of downtown Atlanta," she said.

Mr. Langdale was single-minded in making Georgia State more than a college of 5,200 students, a budget of $1.9 million, two buildings and one degree - in business. Nothing could deter him from his commitment, not even pressure to run for governor in 1962.

When he retired, the university had more than 22,000 students, 20 buildings and a budget of $118.6 million, and it offered 50 degrees in more than 200 fields.

"I think he felt he owned Georgia State, and he took exception to anyone who didn't agree with that," Dodd said.

Noah Noel Langdale Jr., 87, of Atlanta died of cardiac arrest Saturday at Piedmont Hospital. Memorial service plans will be announced by H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill. The body was cremated.

A one-time University of Alabama football star and Phi Beta Kappa graduate, the Valdosta native earned his law degree and master's in business administration from Harvard University.

He left his law practice in Valdosta, where he also taught at Valdosta State University, to become Georgia State's president. That career move more than doubled his salary from $4,500 to $10,202.

Mr. Langdale was an erudite man who could quote great thinkers from Spinoza to Walter Lippmann, or discuss such concepts as the equity of the universality as glibly as he could quote dialogue from Marx Brothers movies.

"I would get these calls at 11 o'clock at night, and Noah would say, 'Turn on Channel 65. "Room Service" is on,' " said his friend Gene Asher of Atlanta.

The next time they got together, details from that Marx Brothers movie might be part of the trivia they quizzed each other on, he said.

After Mr. Langdale retired, he delighted in cruising Buckhead in Asher's convertible, singing along to college fight songs blasting from the tape deck.

Usually, they were headed to eat at the Varsity.

Mr. Langdale was described in one Atlanta Journal-Constitution article as "a yard-wide, bull-necked, granite block of ex-football tackle."

Yet he had a voice and presence more commanding than his girth.

He was courtly to the point of being solicitous and easily recognized by his shock of silver hair and trademark eyeglasses dangling from a black ribbon around his neck.

He was pleased with Georgia State University's long-standing tradition of open debate and academic freedom, an integrated student body, a collaborative administration and a quality faculty and staff.

Mr. Langdale brought the student body to 22 percent minority and 57 percent women, a mix no other college in the state could match, according to a 1987 AJC article.

At the end of Mr. Langdale's tenure, the school had awarded 125 doctorates and had amassed a library of 1 million volumes - more than the College of William and Mary or Clemson University, to cite two examples.

GSU held bragging rights to a thriving law school and a nationally ranked business school and to being a leader in public urban affairs.

For Mr. Langdale, though, it always came down to people.

"The most important thing," he said in a 1986 AJC article, "is that, over the years, we've been able to educate a great number of people who otherwise would never have been able to go to college."

Survivors include a son, Mike Langdale, of Atlanta.

Links referenced within this article

ajc.com http://www.ajc.com/
Metro http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/index.html
Obituaries http://www.legacy.com/atlanta/LegacyHome.asp
KAY POWELL <a href="http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/obits/stories/2008/02/24/mailto:kpowell@ajc.com" target="_blank">http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/obits/stories/2008/02...

Find this article at: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/obits/stories/2008/02...
Hi all,

I am stuck searching my roots. I've gone back as far as my ggggrand-father: March Middleton born 1823, I think he was born in Collins Twp., Colleton Co.. I can't find any records of his birth, or who his parents were. If anyone knows of Any Middleton's from Colleton Co. on or before 1823, please let me know. As a matter of fact, if you have ANY suggestions, I welcome them, as I am new at this.

Thanx
In the 1880 Dorchester Twp, Colleton Cty SC Census, Margaret Willis, age 13, is living with Leavy [Levi Daniel] Grooms (age 27) and his wife Madalina [nee Cocowitch], age 14. Margaret is listed as Levi's niece. On one side of the Grooms is the Tom Sweatman family and on the other is the T.W. Sweat family which includes "nephew," Saml Willis(14 years old). T.W.'s wife is Margaret, age 29.

Is Margaret Sweat a Willis? A Groom? Are Margaret and Saml Willis brother and sister?

Can anyone help sort out these relationships? I will appreciate any leads or information.

CARTER, age 26, born SC; Wiley CARTER, age 7, born SC; David CARTER, age 5, born SC; Mary J.CARTER, age 3, born SC. No other information. Can anyone tell me who was Rebecca CARTER's husband, if she had one. I am seeking the parents of my great grandfather David Adam CARTER, born 25 DEC 1852 in SC and died 30 SEPT 1939 in GA. Family history says that David and his brother Wiley traveled to Appling County, GA from SC around 1862 with their uncle Levi (CARTER) in an oxen cart. Any help with this family appreciated. NOTE: David Adam CARTER named his oldest daughter Mary Jane. Was she named after this Mary J., age 3?

I am related to the Johns and Polk Families (at least) in Colleton Co. In both the 1850 and 1860 Census, I noticed there was an Elizabeth Crews living with the family of my relative Isham Johns.

In the 1850 Census, Elizabeth Crews was shown as a "sojourner" age 60 (b. 1790). The 1860 Census lists an E. Crews, age 67 (b. 1793). In the latter case, E. Crews is listed as male, but I suspect that was just a mistake. The 1860 Census lists Lucia, female, 14 yrs old, AFTER E. Crews, so I'm not sure if Lucia is a Crews relative or a Johns.

Any chance this Elizabeth Crews is the wife of Roger Crews I saw referenced in several of the posts on this board? In any case, I suspect there must be some family connection with the Johns family for Elizabeth to stay with them for this length of time.

Please let me know if you can help make any connection.

Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier, writing to share the exciting news that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation of Charleston, SC has agreed to fund a sister website to Africana Heritage called Lowcountry Africana.

Lowcountry Africana will be entirely dedicated to records that document the family and cultural heritage of African Americans in the historic rice-growing areas of South Carolina, Georgia and extreme northeastern Florida, an area that scholars and preservationists have identified as a distinct culture area, home to the rich Gullah/Geechee culture.

The Lowcountry Africana website will be a treasure trove of primary documents, book excerpts and multimedia that further document and explore the dynamic cultural and family heritage of the Lowcountry Southeast.

Access to the entire content of Lowcountry Africana will always be 100% free. You can learn more about the website features by following the link below:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

We are excited and profoundly grateful to the Magnolia Plantation Foundation for their support of this wonderful project.

If you would like to share records for the database, you may send them directly to us at the email address below. I found a land record where he received land in 1772 in Colleton co SC but I do not know when he sold his land and left SC so if anyone has a resource that would mention a George Ray maybe I can tell when he sold his land.
I am seeking information on James WALKER b Oct 2, 1802 in Colleton Co SC and migrated to Jefferson County Florida about 1829. I am asking about Littleberry WALKER because he and his family also show up in Jefferson County Florida Census data and I am hoping that he may be a brother or cousin of James. Littleberry was born 1812 in SC or Fla and some sources indicate that he was part of the SC WALKERS and his father was Joel WALKER. Littleberry was married to Mary ACKRIDGE.

James married Elizabeth PADGETT Nov 27, 1827 in Colleton Co SC. She was born there in Mar 30, 1807.

Thomas Alexander Fontaine

I suddenly realized that I do not have a solid connection between Thomas Alexander Fontaine b. 30 Apr 1799 Colleton, SC d. 1846 Clarke Co., MS and his father John Fontaine b. 1750 New Bern, NC d. abt 1817 Wayne Co., MS. I have what I believe to be solid connections on everyone else in my line from John Fontaine b. 1750 New Bern, NC on down to myself. So I have been digging into my notes and researching trying to get more "evidence" of this one connection.

John and TAF are listed as father and son in numerous databases all over the net, So I am guessing either all the TAF researchers are like me in basing the connection mainly on family tradition that was passed down through the generations that TAF was John's son OR accepting it to be so based on other family trees on the net or books.

I can not help but wonder if someone somewhere has or knows of a Bible record linking the two it his birthdate is all over the net to be 30 Apr 1799. That date had to come from somewhere, but where?

In Mobile Co. 1825, AL TAF's mother Susannah Cockram granted permission for her underaged daughter Polly to marry. TAF signed as a witness. This suggests a close family association but does not state he was Susannah's
son or Polly's brother. But it makes my weak link a little stronger.

Not sure when or if John applied for his rightful Rev War service pension, but it would have required him to list his children. But if he did, TAF may not have been born yet.

Does anyone know of a Bible record or anything else at all that might help strengthen TAF's connection to his father John?

Thanks.
