Please contact the Camden Archives, located on Broad Steet in Camden. If the person had a headstone in the cemetery it would be recorded in the Cemetery Survey of Kershaw County. They will mail copies of the cemetery listing upon request.

Toni

Re: John C Williams

Hi,

I know of William Williams and Lucy Horton Williams and their children very well. I live adjacent to Kershaw County and have done extensive research on this family. I do not know how it got started that the John Cornelius Williams of Pickens Co., AL is a son of William and Lucy Williams but it is wrong. There is documentation in SC and at the National Archives that proves the John C. Williams in Alabama is not a son of William and Lucy. There was a John Williams that was a son of William and Lucy but his full name John Chalmers Williams. John Chalmers Williams lived and died in Lancaster County, SC (borders Kershaw County). The decendants of John Chalmers Williams living today know the living decendants of William's and Lucy's other children that are living in Kershaw County and they all know they are related. One of William's and Lucy's sons did move to Pickens County, AL and his name was Nathaniel Williams.

I have done some reseach on the John C. Williams in Pickens Co., AL and do think he is connected with the same Williams family but it is the branch that lived in Chester and York Counties, SC. Actually, William Williams of Kershaw County was born on the Chester County / York County border but moved to Kershaw County after the Rev. War and married Lucy Horton there. William's brothers and sisters either stayed in the Chester and York Counties area or moved west. Here is the kicker, William's half brother, John Williams (born 1768), moved from Chester Co., SC to Pickens Co., AL before 1830. He is buried at Bethany Cemetery in Aliceville, Pickens Co., AL. The John C.(Cornelius) Williams of Pickens Co., AL is more closely aligned with this branch of the Williams line that moved from Chester Co. and York Co., SC. I remember finding a very old Alabama newspaper article on John Cornelius Williams and it said he was from Yorkville, SC and belong to a masonic lodge there.

I hope all this has helped. Send me an email if you have any questions.

Please contact the Camden Archives, located on Broad Street, in Camden, South Carolina. The Daughters of the American Revolution took a survey of all cemeteries in South Carolina, this includes African American Cemeteries in 1989. The books, three volumes, cost twenty dollars each and are a wealth of information. It includes whatever is listed on the headstone, family plaque or funeral marker. I must say the information is accurate, I visited some of my families cemeteries, which were included, in the survey.
Camden Achive will give you a copy of the cemetery for less that $1.00 and postage. They also have a website.

Toni A.

I would call the church and see if they have someone who oversees the cemetery and who would be willing to check for you. Church offices aren't always staffed during business hours so you may have to call more than once. Sometimes even a secretary or the minister will be willing to help. It is certainly worth a try! There are two Mt. Zion churches in Camden:

Mt. Zion Baptist Church (803) 432-4991
and
Mt. Zion Black River Baptist Church (803) 432-8552

I think we may be on the same track. My info says Ernest Milton Clyburn marries Bertha Bradley. I did not know her middle name was Jane. It is not on her Death cert. I know of one child--Lucille. I did not know her first name was Agnes. Lucille had 2 husbands: George Henry Paul and Ernest L. Martin. I have searched probate records in Kershaw county but have not found anything on E.M.C. Bertha is my great aunt. If this all makes sense to you, I would love to exchange info. Email direct to me is ok at stollison@sc.rr.com

I am looking for Ernest Milton Clyburn also. He was married to my great grandmother Bertha Jane Bradley. My grandmother was Agnes Lucille Clyburn.

I found some info that Ernest was born in 1883 and his parents were George and Ida Clyburn and they had seven children, Ernest, Belle, Tom, Lewis, Mandosa, Georgia, and Mandosa.

Per The New York Times, in Mar 1903, S. Osgood Pell married Miss Elizabeth Warden at the plantation of her mother at Camden, SC. Her mother was Mrs Arthur Warden a widow who also had a home in Pittsburg, PA. Does anyone have any information about this plantation such as name, location, etc? Also, 28 Oct 1936, a sister to Elizabeth, Juliet Warden Kerr, died in Camden perhaps having ridden on a train to Camden. She was buried in PA. I've been tracking this Warden family and would appreciate any help.

Apologies...I did not mean to say findagrave. I meant to ask if you had posted a request on obits.com? I've requested assistance from them several times asking about an obituary and they've come through for me every time. Of course, 1859-60...obits were not as common as they are today. The other suggestion would be to try and work backward using the last name to see if there are any living relatives. That has worked for me too.

do you know if Francis went to Alabama? I am intrigued by him, as he lived 9 doors from who I think may be my Lewis Collins. that Lewis did have slaves in SC, mine removed first to Alabama and then to Houston Co., TX. I do find a daughter marrying in Lauderdale Co., Alabama. they may be in Morgan Co. earlier. that daughter later married (abt 1844) in Houston Co., TX to a Mr. Boykin. it could be Francis, or it may be a George W. Boykin who received land in 1841 in Houston Co.
with the family so hard to trace back in time, I'm looking into every aspect that might help trace them back.

I am seeking white Collins' and Boykin's in SC and have come across what might be my ancestor and a son in law of his.
in 1810 Kershaw Co. census, I find;

Lewis Collins - 1 - 11||1 - - - 2 - 34

1 boy 10-15, 1 man 26-44, 1 man 45 or older, 1 female under 10, 2 females 45 and over (so where is Lewis' wife?)

the 34 is for the number of slaves he owned.

a Francis S. Boykin lives 9 doors down, aged 16-25 and he lives alone.

I could be wrong about them, but I have to check every plausable record.

my Lewis Collins removed to Alabama before 1828, and then to Texas in 1837. there, a Mr. Boyken married Lewis's widowed daughter Mary J. Collins McDonald about 1844. by 1850 both Mary and Mr. Boykin had died and her brother is raising her 5 children. it is possible that these families migrated together, or close together. the other possibility is a George W. Boykin received land in Houston Co., Texas in 1841.

I'm fairly new to southern research, and am finding it quite difficult. it doesn't help that I'm researching long distance.

Wife of Benjamin S. was Catherine Flynn from Ireland. I know very little about her and would love to know more. Sikke's wife was Mary Anderson 1798-July 29,1868. Her parents were John Anderson and Mary Williams April 10, 1776-Oct 13, 1834. Mary W. parents were Benjamin Williams and Mary Ann Simpson from North Carolina. Wikepedia has a copy of her requesting a pention as his widow in Charleston at the age of 84. She was born in North Carolina Jan 16, 1755 and died in Charleston April 17, 1840. He was in the revolutionary war (not the governor of North Carolina by the same name). Do you know anything about Sikke before he came to the U.S.?
I hope some of this information is helpful. I have a copy of Sikke's will.

I am looking for any information on a Thomas Harris, found on page 175 of the 1810 Kershaw Dist. census.

Based on the census data, Thos. Harris was born between 1766 and 1784. He had 2 boys under 10, and 2 girls under 10 years of age. His wife is the same age group as Thomas.

Harris is living close to an Oliver Massey and I am trying to establish a tie between the two families. Massey moved to Perry Co., Alabama in around 1820. Thomas Harris is not in any 1820 census that I can find in Kershaw, SC or in Perry, Alabama, but I suspect he or his family also moved to Perry Co., Alabama.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I'm not sure if I can be of any help but I believe that Darling A. Baker and Mary Copeland were the parents of one Joe Baker. I also believe Joe had a brother called Dock Baker. Joe married a Minnie Morgan in Jan. 24, 1911. This part I am sure of:).......... Joe Baker and Minnie Morgan/Baker had a daughter Called Gatsie Jane Baker who married a John Craft. John and Gatsie Craft were the grandparents of my husband.
I know that one J.Van Baker married a Susan Boone. They were killed in a train wreak n Camden Aug. 3, 1935. Also killed with them were Samuel Baker, Steve and Annie Boone Baker, John Van Jr. If these are the same Baker's maybe I can be of some help? Thanks, Sarah

Neither name is coming up in my data. Date and place of Birth might help.

Not a Hammond. The Brasingtons and Hammonds have intermarried in the Waxhaws. Any Brasington you meet in that area is likley kin to me, along with the Hinsons, Cauthens, and some Smalls.

Will help anyway I can.
bil_brasington@hotmail.com
