you have George born in MD. What sources have you found? George is my ancestor and I have never been able to find his birthplace. Have is death and burial. Would appreciate any info you may have on George or wife Ann. The other Elizabeth James is who I was referencing. Married to David Davies and mother to George. Her father was a Rev. William James and he was killed in 1754 in PA. Thanks for any info

The father of Elizabeth James Davis Williams (wife of Rev. Aaron Williams) was George Davis who was born in MD and died in York District, SC. Concerning info on David Davies, I do not have anything on him.

Regards,
Dave

Paulette,

I'm not able to see your link, but I'm interested in a will for Henry Wright. He was in York County in 1800 with 13 children. I'm fairly certain one of these is mine, but no one else seems to be researching this family. Thank you in advance if you are able to help.

I am searching for the parents of Alice R. KENNEDY who married John BATES Sr about 1808 possibly in York County. We have very little information on her but John BATES Sr's homestead was on what is now Stoney Fork in what became the Ogden Station area when the railroad went through. The area today on the map is about 2 miles north of Antioch Methodist Church (on Rambo Road) just across the creek on the right hand side. John's neighbor across the road were two Rowell families and the one closest to the creek laid out a cemetery on his property which became know as the Rowell, Bates, & Campbell Cemetery, AKA Antioch Church Cemetery. The cemetery still exists and I am reasonably certain Alice is buried there though few headstones remain intact or readable today.

Is there anyone researching this part of the KENNEDY family?
William G. BATES

Hi Bob

Thank you so much for all of the information that you have provided. Some of it I can verify and some I can't. I think my next trip will be a visit to Catawba. My GG Grandfather was Benjaman Marks and all I can find out about his parents are that his father was born in France nothing about his mother, no names at, all I think I've come to a dead end. But I want to again thank you for all of your help.

Hi Sue!

It has been so long since I made that post, I had join Ancestry again just to answer it! Yes, Isabella is correct. This is exciting! First reply I have ever had to that post.

John Thomas was the son of James J.

John T was born in 1863, just about ten months before James J was killed. John T was my grandfather.

Does that sound like something you can work with? Please let me know.

John David Clark, Sr.
jdclarksr@gmail.com

The records that the York County Knoxes have say that George Knox was married to Margaret Martha Crawford and that he came South with the Crawfords, Allisons and Davidsons. I have seen no proof of this, but accept it as family tradition. Mr. Joseph Hart gives this as her name in his file.

John Schneider, taxidermist, died Jan 1982 in Rock Hill

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me.

My cousins and I are trying to find out where our "Uncle John and Aunt Mary" Schneider are buried in Rock Hill. Uncle John was my grandmother's first cousin, and no one in the current living generation knows where he and Mary were laid to rest. They had no children, so we're their closest living relatives albeit a couple of times removed.

Uncle John was a taxidermist, and apparently did some work for the museum there. I found the museum online and have sent them an e-mail too.

Uncle John and Aunt Mary were Catholic, but I see there are two Catholic churches in Rock Hill. I guess I'll try both of them next if I come empty handed.

If anyone in York Co. remembers Uncle John and Aunt Mary, I'd really appreciate any information you can provide.

Thanks!

Jane
Bel Air, MD

She said in an earlier post that the link was broken. Try SC Archives website http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinearchives/search.aspx. Put name in last name, first name. They have will transcripts, colonial plats, Confederate pension records, etc. online. If the image is available there will be a link on the right saying "online image available" Even if the link is not available, it has a link for "view all index terms" which lists everyone mentioned on the document. Great site.

Thanks for the information. I will probably make a trip down to look through some cemeteries although there is no mention of a Horney in the cemeteries I have checked online. I was hoping I would find him in the same cemetery as Dicia's parents. One of the mail carrier's in 1950 census was a cousin John Chipman.
Do you have a connection to this family?

In 1850, he is living in Newberry, Newberry co., SC with Dicia, James Daniel, and Amanda P. Since he died in 1854, I'd start there (I tried searching for SC death database, but they don't seem to have one). In 1860, Dicia is in York co., SC and married there in 1861.

James' wife applied for a pension and those records are available for viewing at http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/
but there is no mention of his parentage, just as you mentioned with William.

When the person arrived in SC, they first petitioned the Council for land. Land was granted based on the number of people in the household. The land would first be surveyed and a plat drawn up. The colonial plats are available online. The next record would be the grant, which shows the transfer from the governing body, the Council at that time, to the individual. If the individual met the conditions of the grant, he received the memorial which was proof of actual ownership. If he did not meet the conditions of the grant, it was granted to some one else.

SC Archives is an excellent site for SC. I have posted links to it several times on different boards. Several other states have good websites at their archives or state libraries. Just because the plat and memorial show the name spelled Behley does not mean that is the correct spelling then or now. The later document would spell the name as it was on the grant even if it were incorrect.

Thank you so much for this post and the previous. I was able to go to the SC Archives web site and find the info and more. I had no idea the Archives had so much info indexed and digitalized. I have several direct lines back to SC, and knowing this is available will be invaluable.

I wasn't sure about the name Behley on the old document, but what you sent confirms it. Do you happen to know what a memorial refers to?

Per the SC Archives site:

Date: 5/29/1763

Description: BEHLEY, JACOB, PLAT FOR 200 ACRES IN CRAVEN COUNTY.

Names indexed: BEHLEY, JACOB; GASTON, JOHN; LEIGH, EGERTON

Locations: CRAVEN COUNTY; FISHING CREEK

The original grant is often referenced in later deeds. This grant would have been under one of the Bounty Acts:

The Bounty Act of South Carolina

In order to help settle unoccupied lands the General Assembly of the Colony of South Carolina provided financial aid to encourage the immigration of poor Protestants from Europe. As early as 1730, "poor Protestants" were given land if they settled it. The grantees were required to clear and cultivate the land at the rate of at least 3 acres per year for each 100 acres of land granted. After two years, the land owner was required to pay 4 shillings per 100 acres quit rent (essentially land taxes). The amount of land granted was 100 acres for the head of the household and 50 acres for each dependent (wife and children under 15). Although the land was free there were significant fees to be paid for surveys and other legal matters. However, the Governor could and often did waive or otherwise pay these fees for poor immigrants.

In 1752, the act was amended to provided money for tools and provisions. Each person under 50 years old and over 12 years old was given £5. Each person under 12 years, but over 2 years received 2 pounds 10 shillings. In 1761 the bounty was changed to provide money to defray the costs of passage from Europe. Each adult received £4 and each child received £2. Both received twenty shillings to purchase tools and provisions. To receive these benefits, immigrants were required to have certificates to show that they were of that religion and of good character.

"Warrants of Survey for their Lands" were issued on petition of the immigrants, generally at the same time, as authorized under the Act. Encouraged by the Act, large numbers of these protestant immigrants, many otherwise destitute, came to South Carolina, mostly from Europe, but also from other Colonies in America.

The acts that provided for these bounties were amended or expired and reinstated from time to time, but generally continued until 1768 when the Attorney General reported to the General Assembly that the "Bounty Act" had expired and no bounty could be paid to the individuals. He also noted that the eighth clause of the General Duty Act of June 14, 1751, that they were still entitled to "their land free of charge".

Source: Jean Stephenson, The Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772 (Rev.
I have a copy of an 1839 York district document that states 209 acres were originally granted to a Jacob [Behley]. It also says the date of the original grant was illegible. Is someone familiar with what type of grant this might have been? I know that Jacob [Behley] sold this land to Margaret Brown and her husband. If I can figure out when the original grant was given, I can get a time frame for the sale of the land to Margaret and husband and find Margaret's husband's name. Thank you very much.

My gr.gr. grandmother, Mary Ellen Hogue Martin, lists a Mellissa Stewart (b.@1820)as her mother. Ellen's father is listed as Andrew Hogue. They lived in York (later Cherokee Co.) possibly in Kings Creek SC. I'm searching for Mellissa and Andrew w/o much luck. I can't verify a connection yet, but it's certainly a possibility.
