I haven't heard that name. There were Joiners in Greene Co, AL--Rebecca Joiner who married R. Mark Campbell, D. Richard Joiner, William Mason Joiner who married Mary Elizabeth Farrar and Peter Henry Joiner. Do any of those names sound familiar?

I wonder if this Joiner family was kin to Elizabeth Joiner who married Nicholas Stallworth Travis in 1842 in Escambia Co, AL. Her husband was brother to Col. William Barret Travis of Alamo fame.

This message was posted so long ago. I do hope you receive this and are still researching the Joiner/Mathis lines. I am a descendant of William and Sarah through William Mason Joiner and have visited Moab, Blue, Dime Box, etc. I never succeeded in finding the Joiner cemetery referenced. Probate records for William Joiner are located at the Burleson County courthouse. I transcribed the documents to the best of my ability and would be happy to share the information with you. There are quite a few references to RA Mathis husband of Matilda Jane Joiner. The children were listed along with where they resided at the time and minor children of two of their deceased sons, DR and PH Joiner. The tract of land is described as "being located in Burleson county on the waters of the Second Yegua about 29 miles S 64 degrees W from Caldwell containing 220 acres." Hope to hear from you!

Kandice Joiner Mulry
Katy, TX

I have much information on this family all the way back in Indiana, and am still researching them. Please contact me directly for more information.

Their name was originally FLANINGAM, and shows up as Flaningan, Flannagan, Flanigan and Flannigan. They lived in Harrison, Crawford and Montgomery Counties in Indiana.

Nelson Edward Flaningan is buried in Terrell, Kaufman County with his wife Mattie, his daughter Stella Houston and her husband Christopher. There is also a child buried with Nelson and Mattie and I am in the process of finding out who this child belonged to and what its name was. I also have copies of their death certificates. His death certificate states he was born in Indiana. I am not sure at this point where the Louisiana connection comes in.

Nelson's father was Arison Flaningam, formerly of New Jersey to Kentucky to Indiana and his mother was Letitia Sinclair of Harrison County, Indiana.

Nelson's children were Asa Perry, William Arison, Henry Phillip, Stella m. Christopher Houston in Burleson County, Ida May who married Theodore B. Porter in Burleson County, and James Edgar.

I have information on Ida's children.
Nelson's brother Arison Jr. moved back to Greene County Indiana where he married, raised a family and died.

Thank you for writing. Another very unusual circumstance is that our son-in-law is related to my husband. Henry Parker and Nancy Black's sons were James Wesley Parker (our side) and Perry Alexander AKA Alexander Perry Parker (his family). I started thinking there was a connection when he said most of his relatives lived in Milam Texas. He was born in Austin TX where Nancy black died.Life is so very strange. My email address is daydreams@usa.net. Thank you once again. What a fascinating history.

I would appreciate any info from you as to the Lawrence family. My grandmother was Katie Lenora. She moved to South Dakota and married my grandfather Lars Prestegard in 1927. Her youngest sister Nettie Lewis joined her there later. They left part of the original farm to my mother and her sister. This land adjoins the cemetery I believe. Thanks to your earlier posting I was able to figure out my g. grandmothers maiden name, as my mother couldn't remember. Are there any sites or reference books you can recommend? I live in Arizona. Thanks! Bonita Nichols

If you ever run into any information on any Gustavuses in Burleson, I'd appreciate hearing about it, Linda. Micajah, Jr. was the youngest son. Lucy was his Mother's name. Her maiden name is unknown to me. She was a widow when she married the Senior Micajah. He had a younger sister named Mary, which I have no further info on.
I am hoping that this death certificate is a clue to where this family went after the 1880 census.
DAFox

I found the death certificate on FamilySearch, that he must have got the information from...

Looks like he would have had some land if he had been in the county 30 years. I will have to check for any Gustavous, next time.

I did not find any naturalization information for him, but it might be in Washington or Austin County, if he was an immigrant.

The burial place seems to be Salem Cemetery. At least that is what is reads to me. There wasn't a marker for him to be transcribed at Salem, but as you know, there are a lot of graves out there.
Linda
Gustavus and the M. D. Gustavous death certificate in Burleson.
Date of death Dec 25 1915. Cookes Point. Burleson. Resident for 30 years. Resident of Texas looks like a 3 and a 6 overtop each other so it is either 30 or 60 years. To be Micajah Jr, it would have to be 60 years. The DOB and Place of brth are blank. Male, White, Widow, farmer. Father's name looks like it could be Cage Gustavous. Cage is a nickname for Micajah. Place of birth for Father is unknown as is Mother's name and place of birth. He died from Uremia brought on by prostatic enlargement (I can't read the rest). Undertaker J W ? (unreadable) from Caldwell. Burial looks like Sabine or Salem Cemetery on Dec. 26, 1915.
DAFox
There is no place for informant name listed.

What dates are on the Death Certificate? What county names are on it?
On 10 July 1913, M. Gustavus received a land grant of 160 acres in Lampasas County. It was a Milam Preemtion land grant, Patent No. 287, Vol. 33, File No. 000843 from the Texas General Land Office. The original grantee was George W. Price.

Thanks. It is the M. Gustavus born in MS that you have in McLennan in 1880 that I am specifically looking for in Burleson from about 1885 to 1915. I found a death certificate for a M D Gustavous from Cook's Point, Burleson that I would like proof that it could be this Micajah. The fathers name on the certificate is inconclusive.
I am a descendant of some of those Gustavuses in Madison county.
Thanks again.
DAFox

I did not find a record of any Gustavus in Burleson County. In the 1880 Census of McLennan County, TX is a M. Gustavus, age 72, born in LA, and a M. Gustavus, age 23, born in MS.
There was a large Gustavus family in Madison County, TX in 1880 and in 1900 Census.
One of the Lewis Publishing Co series. Most larger libraries will have a copy; doubtful for interlibrary loan.
You can also read it on The Portal to Texas History at http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth29785/
A number of Biographical Sketches - what we usually refer to as "vanity press" since the individual gave
the information he wanted out there (self advertising) but great for family info/clues. These were published on the presumption that anyone treated in the biographical section was sure to purchase at least one book.

Trevia Wooster Beverly
Houston, Texas

The Burleson County Cemetery book was updated very recently. It is for sale. It contains many of those names or cemeteries left out of the original book. Of course, many names of people are still not included. Some gravesites never had a tombstone per sec. Some stones were lost to time and or vandals. Some cemeteries and/or gravesites were never located, as we were not told about them. We are still trying to collect names and sites for future use. If anyone knows the burial home of their loved one and we do not have them listed, please let us know.
I will be happy to see if we have any info on your ancestor.
Linda

The book for Burleson Co is not all inclusive. I was glad I went to the cemetery and then found the book. It left many of the graves around my wife's family out of the book. The folks at the city hall were surprised to find that it had gaps, they had assumed it was correct and complete as of the publishing date.
If you are looking for someone specific, go to the cemetery itself.

Is there an office that I can call to get information on people who are buried in that cemetery?

If there isn't an office, who holds the original burial records for this cemetery?

I have been to the GenWeb site for Burleson County and also have a copy of the 1988 transcription book "Cemteries of Burleson County Texas" published by the Burleson County Historical Society.

These research tools have helped me greatly, but I need further detailed information and need to talk to whomever has the original burial records.

In addition, does anyone know who holds the burial records for Porter's Chapel?

Thank you and I have been searching for the connection for quite some time. The family has strong Indian characteristics and there were government issued Indian numbers, so I knew there was an Indian heritage. Now I know that it is through Henry Parker Sr and his wife who were alleged to have been part Cherokee and/or Choctaw. My husband's grandfather, Marvin Caswell was Mary Elizxabeth Parker's son, whose father was John Wesley Parker and his parents were Henry Parker Jr and Nancy Black. Our son-in-law, Jon Blair, is descended from Perry Anderson Parker, Henry and Nancy's other son. His grandmother was Gladys Parker, daughter of Alfred Parker, son of Perry Anderson Parker whose parents were Henry Parker and Nancy Black. The circle of life is a reality in our family!

Thank you so much for sharing with me.This helps tremendously. Now I see why Marvin Caswell (grandfather) and his siblings all have distinct Indian features. His mother was Mary Elizabeth Parker, daughter of John Wesley Parker, son of Henry Parker. He talked about their Indian numbers that were given to them and that they were called half breeds. He didn't want to talk much about it before he died.So Henry Parker Sr and Rachel were Cherokee and/or Choctaw then. They weren't Quanah Comanche descendants, but were Indian nevertheless. The entire Parker/Caswell family will be so grateful to see and read this.

Thank you once again for your time.
