Clifton Allen Peters was my grandfather's brother. The family lost contact with Allen years ago and your message provided me more info about my uncle that I had ever heard. Information I have located has Allen's date of death as 11/15/1963, interred at Willamette National Cemetary in Portland Oregan. His father, Joseph Edward Peters, died 07/17/1939 in Randall Texas. His wife, Ethel, died in 1918 (I think there was a step-mother, but I have no information). Annie is actually their grandmother (married to James Edward Peters, who passed in 1916). Any info you are willing to share would be much appreciated.

I would be happy to share these with anyone who has a connection to either the building (if it still exists) or the family.

This would mean "Bessie" McCommas born MO 1879 listed in Carroll, Platte Co MO in 1880 census is Myrtle Elizabeth and Leonard listed as Lynord McCommas. A sister reported to be Nancy B McComas born 1888 Platte MO reported to have died in Marlow, Stephens Co OK 25 Oct 1912.

http://www.newcombfamilytree.com/tree/aqwg12.htm

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txcollin/
His profession in 1920 was listed as "farm manager." By 1921 he was manager of the Walter Darlington farms/ranches of the eastern Panhandle. In the 1930 Census he was living in Shamrock and working as an insurance agent.

I don't know much about it. Harold (Bud) said he was about seven, so it would have been about 1935. I can't remember if he told me it was in Burnham or if it was Helen who told me that. Burnham got swallowed up by Ellis County before 1930, though - apparently it was a hostile takeover, and someone got shot - and Ellis County is a bit far from Wilbarger. Helen said he was found near a body of water, and apparently Dena thought he had stopped to get a drink and fallen in. It turned out that someone had killed him, I believe by hitting him in the head. Helen believes he was killed for his cotton gin, but I don't think they ever found out who did it. I keep hoping I'll come across a newspaper article, which I probably will eventually.

I should correct that to say J.T. McMullen was murdered in 1935 or '36, not 1835/36 - a hazard of spending so much time in the 19th century!

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the old house, but I remember it as having a "long" front and being unpainted, as were just about all of our farm houses, except for the neat two-story white house of Warren Johnson. After Isom and Dena moved into Wellington, the Moodys moved into the house. I will try to contact one of the Moody boys to see if he might have a picture and get back to you. Our old two-room house with a two-room salt-box style added onto the back, also unpainted (have you read John Grisham's THE UNPAINTED HOUSE--never really understood its significance until I read the book about Grisham's childhood) has since fallen down. After we left, Lon Wellborn, bachelor/cowboy bought the place and moved into the house. He called it "the poor farm." As the original began to deteriorate (it was built in 1908), Lon moved another house onto the location and lived there the rest of his life.

If you will send me your e-mail address, I will e-mail a picture of our house to you. If I can get one of the old Judd House from John Moody, I will send that one also. My address is DonaldG100@aol.com

Many thanks for the info and corrections!!
Thanks for the list of the kids. I knew I was missing J.T. and Frankie from my tree, but I could not remember Clarence. I did their tree in my very childish handwriting when I was about nine, but I guess I left it with my grandfather, and then who knows what happened to it. Do you happen to have any photos of their old farmhouse? My uncle had drawn a picture of it, which I copied for my tree. I am now an artist and would love to do something nice for the document I'm working on about the family. I'm also doing a series of paintings of the family (when I can take a break from genealogy, another art project and sewing Halloween costumes, that is).

As far as Dena goes, I know that her father's name was John Thomas McMullen, and he seemed to go by J.T. or Tom. Bud told me Tom was murdered about 1835 or 1836, but neither of us has been able to get our hands on a death certificate or find his grave. Dena's mother was his second wife, his first being Mary Harrison, who died in childbirth in 1888. Emma McMullen was the daughter born to her before her last pregnancy, and Bud is Emma's son. Tom's second wife is listed as either S.A. or L.A. Lowry on the marriage record - actually, as both, as her name is listed three times. I believe it is probably L.A., which appears twice, and the S.A. was just a mistake.

Now, the 1900 census is a little wacky. "Aunt Cate," Julia Catherine, was living in the same house as John H. Lowry and his wife, Elizabeth, as she always had throughout the years. She is listed as a separate head of household, but then someone marked her as a daughter and the McMullens as grandchildren. Elizabeth was a Potts, the daughter of Jane Potts Massey. Elizabeth married William L. Taylor and had Julia, James and Jesse, and William was killed in battle in the Civil War. She married John Lowry and had Josephine, and then it goes kind of loopy. In 1880, she had "Alcestir" and Emeline/Eveline living with her. By birthdate, and assuming these are her kids, "Alcestir" is Josephine. I'm still missing two kids, according to her statement in 1900 that she'd had seven children. It's just a mess, and I think I may be going to Mississippi in the future!

I apologise for the delayed response. I do not recall Ancestry sending me notification of a reply.

I remember my grandmother speaking fondly of Tommie. She was married to Preston Judd, who was called Snooks. He was one of the oldest of the Judd kids. As far as I know, my grandmother kept in touch with Tommie throughout the years. She died in 2006, and I see that Tommie died in 2002.

The records for Dena and Isam's kids have been fairly easy to find. I had to phone my great aunt Helen to find out which kids I was missing - 17 were born, and three died as babies. I believe one of the babies was born before Texas started issuing certificates, but I have been wrapped up in Dena's family for so long now that I haven't completed her tree with Isam yet. I've also been keeping separate trees, thinking it would be easier to keep up with bits of the family separately, but that has proven very messy, indeed.

Oh, well, I'm thinking at this point that I will take a trip to Mississippi around spring if I haven't found the information. I know there are a lot of documents lying around the courthouse and the historical society that have not been compiled into library books or digitized.

We lived in the Roundup Community and were neighbors of the Judd Family. My father and mother, Lewis and Christene Green, were quite close to Isam and Dena and their children. Trueman Judd, oldest son of "Dick" and Lavern Judd, was my closest friend. He and I learned to crawl together. I have a picture of us when we are about 5 years old standing beside a Model A Coupe which I believe must have belonged to Dick.

Here is what I have: 1. THOMAS MCMULLIN was born 1856 in Mississippi, and died Abt. 1936 in Wilbarger County, Texas. He married a POTTS. Harold "Bud" Roan, grandson of Emma O. McMullin, told me several years ago that his grandfather's given name was Thomas. In the U.S. Census of 1910, Texas, a Thomas McMullens [sic] is living in Hunt County, Texas, 1st Ward, Commerce. He is listed as a widower, working as a farm laborer and living with the family of William R.
Harrison (Household #116) age 50, also born in Mississippi. He is living in the same county as daughter Dena
McMullin, now wed to Isam Judd and living with the family of James Hobson Judd, Isam's father. "Buck"
Judd told me that "Tom" McMullin worked in the oil patch for the Waggoner Ranch (the 3 Ds) in Wilbarger County, Texas.
Children of THOMAS MCMULLIN and POTTS are:
i. EMMA OLIVIA MCMULLIN, b. Jan 1888, prb Benton County, Mississippi.
2. ii. DENA JOSEPHINE MCMULLIN, b. May 1892, Benton County, Mississippi; d. 1949, Wellington, Texas.
iii. DELSIE L. MCMULLIN, b. Sep 1893.
iv. JOHN Y. MCMULLIN, b. Jan 1895.
Generation No. 2
2. DENA JOSEPHINE2 MCMULLIN was born May 1892 in Benton County, Mississippi, and died 1949 in Wellington, Texas. She married ISAM THEODORE JUDD 13 Jan 1908 in Greenville, Texas, son of JAMES JUDD and LAURA CHRISTI. He was born 1891 in Texas, and died 1960 in Clarendon, Texas.

I have been unsuccessful in finding the name of Dena's mother. By 1900, her mother was probably deceased. In
the U.S. Census of 1900, Mississippi, Benton County, Precint 5, she, along with her sister, Delsie, and brother,
John, are living with their aunt, Julia C.[atherine] Potts Duncan, sister of their mother, a widow (household #5).
Dena's sister, Emma, is living with the Todd family close by (#2).

The Isam Judd family except for the children born after 1930, is found in the U.S. Census of 1930,
Collingsworth County, Texas, Precint 2, p. 182 A & 182B, household #193. The Elzy Jaco Family (Cordie was
the sister of Isam) is found living near them as Household #186.
Children of DENA MCMULLIN and ISAM JUDD are:
i. J.T. JUDD, b. 1909; d. Abt. 1909.
ii. CLARENCE JUDD, b. 1911; d. Abt. 1911.
iii. THURSTON C. JUDD, b. 1912; d. 1950, Boring, Oregon.
More About THURSTON C. JUDD:
Cause of Death: Killed in automobile accident.
iv. FRANCES W. JUDD, b. 1914.
Notes for FRANCES W. JUDD:
Called "Birdie."
3. v. PRESTONOR C. "Snooks" JUDD, b. 1915.
4. vi. CHESTER M. "Dick" JUDD, b. 02 Jan 1917, Lark, Texas.
vii. DENZIL "Dennie" T. JUDD, b. 1918.
viii. RUTH O. JUDD, b. 1919; m. DAN CULP.
ix. ORPHEUS LEE "Budk" JUDD, b. 1921; m. MAUDINE LOCKHART.
x. J. R. "Jiggs" JUDD, b. 1922.
xi. ORAN GILBERT "John" JUDD, b. 1924.
xii. HELEN M.
My aunt, Tommy Willard Judd, lived in the Lutie/Needwood communities north of Wellington in Collingsworth County, Texas. I do not remember her husband's name. Never met him. But they lived in Amarillo, Texas and later he divorced her. They had two children, JoAnn, who died as a very young child, and Herman, who still is living and resides in Amarillo. JoAnn is buried in Wellington. In the historic Needwood cemetary, there are numerous Judd children and people buried there. I was there a few months ago and saw numerous graves. Don't know names. Thought this might help you.

It's been several years, but I am wondering if anyone found information on Dena's parents. Dena was my grandfather's mother (my grandfather was J.R., aka "Jiggs"). I can trace Isom back to England (assuming the records are accurate) but cannot find any information about Dena. She was always a little mysterious to us, as my grandmother was certain she immigrated from Ireland, which doesn't seem to be the case. I cannot even find a definite spelling for McMullin/McMullen - some records have it as McMullins.

The Family History Library has a marriage record for Martha Henrietta Hughey and William Butler Cole, 18 Sep 1864. Online "Faught Family Tree", owned by Janet Faught Von Roeder, may help fill-in the blanks? http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8936411/person/-872487371 I believe she connects W. B. Cole to the 1850 census of Lincoln County, TN-Subdivision 1-Image 52? Father: John Cole of Kentucky born about 1811? If he was the same person you have identified then perhaps the connection is complete?

Howdy, Thanks for your assistance with Coles. Stewart Wayne Cole was living in Wellington in 1980. He had transcribed the information from the Stephen Cole Bible and had taken it to a notary in Wellington. How this relates to Stephen Cole I do not know yet but am confident he, Stewart was a direct descendant of Stephen Cole of Lincoln Co. TN. There are 6 possibilites for a father to this William B. Cole.
William Cole second son of Stephen b 28/Aug/1795,Hiram Cole b. 20/Jan/1802, Marcus H. Cole b. 11/May/1806, Isaac R. Cole b. 20/Dec/1808, John S. Cole b. 6/Aug/1811 and Felix G. Cole b. 26/Dec/1813.

By the way this William B. Cole was born 6/Feb/1841 C :)

Your post is in Collingsworth County. Stewart Wayne Cole was born 20 Jan 1939 in Castro County. His father Claude Cecil Cole (22 Nov 1910 - 14 May 1970) died in Swisher County. Claude Cecil Cole's father was John Hughey Cole (19 May 1874 - (6 May 1945) who died in Lubbock but lived in Swisher County. William B. Cole, born about 1841 in Tennessee fathered John H. Cole. Unable to connect William B. and your Stephen Cole. However, there are probably other living males that are descended from William B. Cole? The counties near Amarillo: Castro, Swisher, Collingsworth, and Potter have birth records for this family. Ray Cole (25 Feb 1900 - 10 Jul 1953) was Stewart Wayne Cole's uncle. Ray Cole and Laura Ellen Cox begat Steven Ray Cole-25 Aug 1930-Swisher, Finis Lee Cole-20 Sep 1938-Castro, and David Lewis Cole-6 Mar 1945-Potter. Steven Ray Cole and Darlene Pearl Edmonds had Steven Ray Cole Jr.-1 Feb 1954-Potter and Robert Wayne Cole-25 Jun 1958-Potter. Steven Ray Cole Jr. and Janet Kathleen Stokes had Steven Ray Cole III-30 Mar 1982-Potter. Post additional messages in Swisher, Castro, and Potter Counties? Swisher appeared to be their homebase with many burials in Tulia?

Need help locating grave for William T. Berry, buried Rolla 1940

Per the death certificate William Thadious Berry d.4/9/1940 in Wellington, Collingsworth Co., TX and was buried Rolla, TX. Is the Rolla cemetery still in existence? I understood most were moved to Wellington; if so is there a record of where the remains were placed? His wife Sarah was probably also buried in Rolla. She passed away in 1927 and they are on the Collingsworth Co. census for 1920, probably Rolla or Buck Creek Community. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

My grandfather, Ernest Lloyd Hunt, wrote many letters home mentioning his friends Finis and Willis. We have found Willis's family and we are hoping to find Finis's family. Can you help us connect?
