My grandfather was Frank Leifeste, my dad was William Mckinnely (mispelled), there was also a Julias who died in the big war. My dad's relatives all mostly live in Mason Texas, but I've never been to see any of them. I would love to know what my grandfather looked like as a young man. All I remember is a big guy with a bushy beard that hid the face. I wasn't very old, and have no memories of him or my grandmother who was a Bowers. If you have anything new please let me know,
Thank You

The Leifestes came here with 3 or 4 sons (and had more here) and did not want them to die fighting in the Prussian wars. The sons scattered about the hill country of Texas. Robert August Leifeste was my grandfather.
Karen Olsen Lebeter

Have you collected the court records from Howard Co.? I have Howard Co. court records from 1883 when I.C. Sparks wanted to be guardian of 4 nephews. At the time his residence was listed as Coryell Co., TX. Maybe buried there? In 1880 census he was listed in Mernard Co. Could he be in the Toby Cemetery or Bear Creek Cemetery? mary jane Weldon Toby was I. C.'s sister-in-law.

Elizabeth Weldon's father is my great grandfather. Have you found any record of her in Ark?

Love to share notes.
Gloria

I live just down the road from the Old Hardesty homeplace, and Yates, Texas. There is only one Hardesty descendent in the area at this time, his name is Gaylon...(probably in his late 40's)..I have researched the Hardesty line and could go back into my notes and tell you how they are all related....but don't know (personally) any of the newer generations. If you know any of their history, or stories...I know Gaylon would love to know anything you can share....and so would I. There may be one of the older Hardesty's still living in Menard, Texas.

I have lots of information for you... I just happened to be researching the Dagen and Cabler family lines to do a newspaper article this week on a daughter of Birdie Springs Dagen Cabler. Birdie is buried in the Junction Cemetery, Section 2.

I assume Jacob D. Degan was "Bud"...Birdie's first husband. They had two children, John Samuel and Ida Mae Dagen.

Birdie married James F. "Jim" Cabler son of Sid & Nancy Splawn Cabler...
and ...get this... Birdie's son, John S. married Lottie "Delia" Cabler... Sid and Nancy's daughter. So mother and son married a brother and sister...

Try to get your head wrapped around that one! LOL... Anyway, I'd love to hear from you...

itsmeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (at)yahoo.com (l5 e's)

I believe the Fredericksburg Leifestes were the originals, but I'm not sure. The family came from Prussia years ago, probably to escape the conflicts building there and in Germany.

I'm searching for anyone who might have known or have information on George Shelby Nichols. He went by Shelby Nichols. George Shelby Nichols was born on May 11, 1914 and died on May 9, 1962. He enlisted in the army at Fort Sam Houston in 1941. His family resided in Junction, Kimble County, Texas. His mother and father were said to have a farm or ranch in Junction. George Shelby Nichols was said to have drove a grain truck for at least part of his life so he traveled all over. He never married. When he wasn't traveling he lived on the ranch/farm with his parents. Please if you have any information, no matter how small, let me know. I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Felicia Holland

Recently received this and I was wondering if anyone might have information on this marriage:

The Menard Messenger
Vol. 8 No. 12
Thursday, January 7, 1915

HAMBY-SINCLAIR
General Hamby sprung a big surprise on his many friends and parents on Saturday December 26th, by returning from Junction with one of Kimble county's most popular young ladies safely tied to him by the bonds of holy matrimony. Everybody is congratulating General but "Dad" can't see for the life of him whatever got into the young lady to use such awful judgment. At any rate they are happy and the Messenger joins their friends both here and in Junction in extending congratulations."

General was a resident of Austin, Travis, Texas at his death in 1918, so he and UNKNOWN SINCLAIR were only married for a short time. He is buried at Menard Co., Texas, and his father was a lawman, Franklin Marion Hamby who was married to Nannie Casey-McMullon...or McMillon......

I haven't had time to search Texas marriages as yet....
General's full name was General Stonewall Jackson Hamby.
Thank you for any help.
Nancy
The Menard Messenger
Vol. 10 No. 21
Thursday, March 22, 1917
---------------------------------------------------
(page 1)

DAN PHELPS IS KILLED IN A FIGHT

Dan Phelps, a well known rancher from Kimble County was fatally wounded in a fight, Thursday night, by Wesley Lifeste of Roosevelt. The fight occurred at local wagon yard and arose over a horse trade and it is alleged the
Phelps made a rush at Lifeste with an open knife in his hand. Lifeste picked up a piece of an end gate and struck him over the head. Phelps dropped to the ground and Lifeste and those present thinking that he was only drunk left him
lie on the ground until the next morning, when it was discovered that his condition was serious and he was removed
to the R?ck Hotel. Local doctors worked over him but were unable to restore him to consciousness. Dr. Gayton of Brady was summoned and it was decided to take him to the sanitarium there for an operation. A blood clot was removed from his brain but he died Saturday night without ever having regained consciousness.

Lifeste is being held in the county jail here charged with murder and his bond fixed at $2,500.

(Submitter's note: I have no additional information on this gentleman. I just transcribed this while looking through Menard County, Tx. newspapers).

The Menard Messenger
Vol. 10 No. 14
Thursday February 1, 1917
-------------------------------------------------
(page 1)

DEATH OF J. D. PETTIGREW

Last week, Wednesday night at his home in London, occurred the death of J. D. Pettigrew, a pioneer of West Texas and a highly respected citizen of this section. Mr. Pettigrew has been ailing for some time and his death was not entirely unexpected by his friends and relatives. He was 89 years old at the time of his death and came to this vicinity 40 years ago. He was born in Arkansas and served faithfully with the Boys in Gray during the Civil war. He was the father of thirteen children eight of whom are living, four girls and four boys. The funeral services were held the following day at the London cemetery, Marion Adams having charge. Mr. Pettigrew leaves many friends who join with his family mourning his loss. Jim Pettigrew, a son of the deceased, was called to his bedside and stayed until after the funeral.
Hello,

There is a very interesting article about Caroline's family posted at.....
http://www.wtblock.com/wtblockjr/christia.htm

Unfortunately, there is nothing about Willim Brewer except his name. I have a historical article about Wiliam and Caroline's oldet son, Erastus, written by Frederica Wyatt. In that article there is a reference to William on the 1880 census. The 1880 census said William was born in Louisiana but his father was born in NY.

There are thousands of BREWERs in NY; English Brewers, Dutch Brewers, and German Brewers. I started a BREWER DNA Study with a DNA sample from my wife's brother. Currently, we have 3 or 4 matches with descendants of Jan Brower, an early settler of NYC.

Look here for information about the BREWER DNA line. If you scroll all the way down to the results the Jan BROUWER line is in YELLOW.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/BrewerDNA/index.aspx

Grant Johnston, Chico, CA

"I am working on the Brewers of Comanche, Llano, Mason, Kimble, Gillespie, Menard Counties of Texas."

If those are the Brewer's that descend from William Brewer and Caroline Hildebrand of Beaumont, TX I may be able to help you.

Their son Erasmus Andrew Brewer moved his family to Klamath Co., OR about 1910. Erastus stayed in London, (Kimble Co.) and was a merchant. William and Caroline died and are buried in Menard Co., I'm going by memory but I think they are in Little Saline Creek Cemetery.

If this sound like the right family I can give you a little more info.

Grant Johnston

Thanks E.J.
" Jesse Carl, Sr. was around Stephen & Jefferson County Okla. in the 30's. I rremember seeing a census where he and Ona lived with his mother & other siblings. J.C. Jr. was a baby. If I remember right Jesse Carl's mother was listed as June Salmon age 59 a widow. This must have been the 1930 census. E.J. ??

Grant.. I did not see J.C. for more that 50 years, I remember he came to our house in Casa Grande, Arizona in the 50's.
My mother cleaned out a storage house out in back & let him live out there. We used to play canasta, he was crazy about canasta. I always beat him and he would jump up and scream that I was cheating, that I must me cheating.....
I had a knowledge of him when I was in first grade..His sister Leona was abt. 2 years older than I am and they lived a block away. She & I would play together but J.C. was older and would have nothing to do with us..
I would enjoy anything you can tell me about J.C. and his life, I know he must have had a hard one. Some people are not dealt a good hand. But, I believe its what you make it.
Please email me at my home B29wendover@wmconnect.com
it may be best we don't share everything with the world...
Thanks so much ...Elisa

You could Google "Dawes Roll" and search for Salmon. I think the name came from England and may be a corruption of Solomon or Soloman.

Indians used English names -- like Davis and Jones -- so Salmon could be Indian. Several people thought the Ishee's of Jasper Co., MS were NA. Some even continued to believe it, even after records were found which proved the Ishee's were Swiss.

Grant Johnston

I'm sort of interested in that family also, I'm trying to find out how they are related to Walter and Marth Jane Mankins. You will find them in the 1855 Census under the following:
William and Williamson District of Texas
Samuel Mankins 35
Dotia 34
John 15
Nancy J 13
Evan 11
Sarah a 9
Marze 8
Samuel J 7
Jasper 5
George 3
Celina 2
bob
