Hi Maxine, I am not sure if we are possibly related as I do not have my history book in front of me however I will in the next few days look up what I have to give so we can investigate this further. I can tell you that my grandfather's name was David Arthur Baptist and his wife's name was Elizabeth Reekie.
I am from Canada and I do believe we have relatives in the United States so hopefully we can correspond again.

Richard Bannister Baptist Sr. married Nannie Emmerfield Scruggs and lived in Boydton, Va in Mecklinburg County. They had 6 Children, Eugenia, Verdelle, Elnora, Wilson, Hazel and Eunice. They moved to Newport News, VA to 2704 Chestnut Ave in Newport News. While in Boydton, he was Clerk of Courts. There is a relative still living in Boydton but she will not release any information concerning the family. However, I contacted the current Clerk of Courts who does have records regarding Richard Bannister Baptist Sr. More information is forthcoming!

I too am searching the Baptist (Baptiste, Baptista) family tree. If you are located in Boydton, VA I too am probably a long lost cousin. :>) My great-grandfather is Ino Baptist and his son, Richard Bannister Baptist Sr. is my grandfather. He was married twice. The first union there were Alva, Eunice, John, Richard Jr. and I think two other children. Alva and Eunice lived in New York. Alva's only surviving child of three (Eleanor, Marshall and Eunice) lives in Florida. She has a lot of family history which she has been sharing with my sister Jeanne B. Boone (Mperial82@cs.com) She would appreciate hearing from you as would I.

In continuing, The Boydton Clerk of Courts has information on the Baptist family. It seems that There have been references to Richard Baptist being Clerk of Courts. Additionally, The Scruggs family hails from Jettersville, Va in Amelia County. There are two families of Scruggs. My grandfather, Richard Bannister Baptist Sr. married Nannie Emmerfield Scruggs from Jettersville. From that union 6 children were born. That was his second marriage. My generation is related to the children from both of the marriages. I don't have my information before me right now, but I do have a folder with more pertinent information. One of my Aunts, Sally Olds Baptist Davis married Wilson Baptist from the second marriage. However, her cousin married Wilson's cousin from the second set of Scruggs. Let's compare info!

Is David Arthur Baptist by any chance the son or grandson of John Baptist? He left and the family never heard from him again. He was the son of Richard Bannister Baptist Sr. and/or possibly Richard Bannister Baptist Jr.

My grandfather was Richard Bannister Baptist of Boydton, VA. His first wife was Mary Finney. There were, I believe, 5 children born to this union:Alva, Eunice, Maggie, John and Richard. Richard Baptist, your grandfather, married Nannie Emmerfield Scruggs and had 6 other children: Eugenia, Verdelle (my mother),Elnora,Wilson,Hazel and Evelyn. We have a family site that we are currently developing on "MyFamily.com". Wilson and Verdelle are deceased, but, Eugenia, Verdelle's twin lives here in Newport News at 485 Rich Neck Road. She can be reached by calling 757-877-0447. The family keeps in close contact.
I am Verdelle's youngest daughter,Deborah. I live in Yorktown, VA and can be reached at 757-867-8068 or on-line at OneryB@aol.com. I am interested in any knowledge that you might have concerning Richard Baptist such as: his father's name, mother's name and any other family history. If you search under his name using the state of Virginia, there is a write-up of some of his accomplishments. The family, however, has come to a snag in researching "Ino" and or "Jno" which was short for John in the "Old Handwriting Guide". Any information would be helpful. As well as any news concerning your mother and family. Aunt Eugenia said that she had not heard from your mother in a while. You know that she and mama were the oldest of the second set and she will be 90 this August. Muriel, Aunt Alva's daughter is the only one of her children that is still alive. She is in Florida. My sister, Jeanne converses with her on a regular basis.
Paul David, Aunt Elnora's son has started the family tree on My Family.com. If you access that site, just go to Baptist Tree and you will see the information that we have gathered so far as well as pictures of the family, young and old.
Again, I ask for your help with any information that you might have. You can contact Paul at PGD58@earthlink.net. I am quite sure that he will be able to add you to the family list so that you may participate in adding to the family history.
Thank you so much. It was a surprise and a pleasure to see that you were on the Baptist message board. Hoping to hear from you soon.

Deborah Blevins-Haydon (Another Baptist!)

P.S. My sister's telephone number is 757-723-3230. She too is here in Hampton, VA. along with Aunt Hazel. Aunt Evelyn and Aunt Elnora are residing in New York
