Brinegar Cabin

I'm trying to locate someone with info. on the Brinegar Cabin at mile marker #241 or thereabouts on the BlueRidge Parkway in NC. My GGF's cabin is in the valley below about a mile away and our families inter-married quite a bit. I'd like to learn more about the connections. One specific marriage is Trealy Brinegar + Cynthia Atrhusia Caudill. Cynthia was my GGF's younger sister.

Who lived in Brinegar Cabin? My family climbed the hill to safety at Brinegar Cabin during the flood of 1916 which wiped out the valley with mud slides.

Any help is appreciated.

From http://www.nps.gov/blri/doughton.htm

Brinegar Cabin - The Brinegar Cabin dates from about 1885 and was the home of Martin Brinegar and his family. Brinegar was a cobbler as well as a farmer. His home is open on summer weekend afternoons. Hand-loom weaving and other craft demonstrations are often given during the summer months.

Another page, http://www.blueridgefriends.org/pr/71202_nps.html, identifies the family as Martin and Caroline Brinegar.

I'm not sure who the father of this Martin Brinegar is, however - is this a son of Martin b. 1805?

Cynthia Arthusia Caudill (d.o. James H. Caudill + Sarah Jane Tilley) m. Monroe Denton Wagner (Wagoner? Waggoner?) at age 12. After Monroe's death, she married Trealy Brinegar abt. 1924. Cynthia was born about a mile from Brinegar cabin. Drop a rock into the valley from Brinegar cabin and and you'd hit the house of James Harrison Caudill Cynthia's father. Any connection? The valley washed out in 1916 and everyone more or less left Basin Cove. They didn't marry for twelve years after that so this may be nothing.

Oh well.

PS ~ thanks for the info. I'm going to try tracking Martin's father as well.

I already found Thomas Brinegar b. abt.1860 in 1880 Alleghany Census Cranberry Township and Franklin Brinegar b. abt. 1862 grandson of Issac Holloway b.abt 1805 + Gracy Holloway b. abt. 1803. Any clues? Thomas was working as a servant to Patsy Holloway b. abt. 1830.

Lennie - Don't know how much you've found out since this posting but Martin Brinegar (builder/owner of Brinegar cabin on Parkway), Thomas Marshall (Parsh) Brinegar and Isaac Franklin Brinegar are brothers. I have just come from visiting the area. I did research at the Alleghany County Records office and also went "cemetery hunting" and have info from some headstones.

The parents of Martin, Thomas and Franklin are William and Mary "Polly" (Holloway) Brinegar. Mary's parents are Isaac and Mary "Polly" (Pruitt) Holloway. William was deceased by 1874 when Mary "Polly" Holloway Brinegar married Thomas C. Cleary on 27 Feb 1874 in the township of Cranberry in Alleghany County, NC. Thomas Cleary was a witness at the wedding of Martin Brinegar and Caroline Joines in Cranberry township, Alleghany County, NC. Two other witnesses at the wedding of Martin and Caroline are Daniel Holloway and Levi Joines.

William's parents are Thomas Brinegar (born about 1800) and Sarah. That's all the info I currently have on them.

The parents of Thomas Brinegar (born about 1800) are Jacob and Nancy (Frasier) Brinegar. Info I have is Jacob, born 25 Feb 1778, Rowan County, NC; died 29 Jul 1844, Wilkes County, NC. Nancy (Frasier) Brinegar, born about 1780 in Rowan, NC.

Thank you!

I had some of this info. but not all.

I wonder if Daniel Holloway was the one born in 1796-ish?

Daniel's daughter married one of Jesse P. Caudill's sons. They populated half of Alleghany County

I'm currently away from home and away from my own notes and notebooks on people, but...

I'm speculating, the Daniel Holloway that witnessed the marriage of Martin Brinegar to Mary "Polly" Holloway was more likely to be Mary's brother, since the wedding took place in 1878. Mary had a brother, Daniel, that was born about 1840.

The Daniel Holloway (born 1796-ish), what was the name of his daughter that married the son of Jesse P. Caudill?
