Brothers Family

It has been reported that my family came over from southern Ireland in the 1600s to Nova Scotia and then down to southern Maryland, or what later became Maryland. I've pegged my family tree back to 5th great grandfather, Cornelius Brothers, born in southern Maryland circa 1740. Cornelius later moved to what later became the Bardstown, KY area, died there, and his ancestors moved up to southern Indiana -- probably about Civil War time. Is ANYONE out there part of the same tree AND able to take the lineage back past Cornelius? Help!!!!

Bob Brothers, Indianapolis, IN

Melissa, that's great! Thanks for your quick response!

Robert had 5 sons, the middle one was named John after his brother, your ancestor; the first 3 were born in AL. I know he left AL for MS, as his 4th son was born there in 1871, and from there he went to AR, where his last son was born in 1874. I can't find him on the census anywhere in 1870, but the census was spotty after the war. I'm descended from his 2nd son, Henry. Robert and John were evidently neighbors in 1860, the entire family shows up under the surname as "Boline". Robert also was the only male in his family that didn't serve in the War Between the States, as far as I know. I've always wondered if that was why he left AL, and lost contact with his family.

My tree and info are public, most of it is sourced. You can email me directly at xtxnsntn@gmail.com.
Best regards,
Betty

Hanford Weekly Journal
Hanford, Tulare County, California
Tuesday, 14 FEBRUARY 1893
***************************************

DEATH'S RECORD at LEMOORE --
John A. BROTHERS, aged 69 years, died at his home in Lemoore last Friday morning, Feb. 8th. The funeral took place last Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, from the family residence, and it was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Grangeville cemetery.

Deceased leaves a wife, 3 sons, George A., Frank and Jerry BROTHERS, all residents of Lemoore, and a daughter, Mrs. H.E. DOYLE of Hanford.

He was a native of Ohio, but removed to Pennsylvania at an early age, where he grew up and was married. He came to Lemoore in 1888, in order to be near his sons and daughter, who had preceded him to that town. He was highly respected by all who knew him and his death is mourned by the community in which he lived.
I found what you need:

From the Civil Records of Blackstone, MA.
Gilbert Goodhue * (Joseph Goodhue and Mary ..... ), age 22, Resident of Sutton, MA. Occupation: Shoemaker.
Born in Canada
married on 07 Mar 1862 St. Paul's Church, Blackstone, MA.

Martha Brothers * (Antoine Brothers and Mary .....) age 16,
Resident of Sutton, MA Born in Canada

In the Church Records, Goodhue is Gauthier and Brothers is Brodeur. This is typical of the French. The Church records would have their french name and the Civil Records would have what was Americanized.
Samuel Brothers married Eliza Bozman in 1841 in Morgan County, Ohio. In the 1850 census, they are in Blue Rock Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Samuel was 31, so born about 1820 in Virginia. Eliza was born in Virginia, too, about 1827. In 1850 they had 3 small children: John (age 6), Sarah E. (age 3), and Albert (born about 1850, can't make out the fraction). I don't know what happened to them after 1850. I'm researching Bozmans and trying to figure out where Eliza fits. So any information on them would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeanne

I am looking for Meriam's birth date and parents. I found her in the Foster Bible where it reads Mary E Spence daughter of Abel Spence and Meriam Brothers. I think she is a sister to Wright and Samuel Brothers and her father John "Jackie" Brothers but the only clue I have is the 1870 US Census Abel has a niece listed with him named Sarah E Brothers age 17. Wright Brothers has a daughter Sarah E age 6 on the 1860 Census.

Thomas & Nancy Brothers

My 3rd great grand parents are Thomas & Nancy Brothers. They had a son, my 2nd great grandfather Jesse D Brothers. Thomas died in Shelby Co, TN in 1834. I have copies of the following Shelby Co, TN court documents: (1) 10/20/1834, Robert Simonton named administrator of Thos Brothers estate. (2) 10/20/1834 Guardianship of minor Jesse Brothers to Presley Maulding (Jesse would later marry Presley's daughter Matilda). (3)11/24/1834, division of estate to wife, Nancy & son Jesse, being only legatees contending. (4) 11/25/1834 Establish maintenance for Nancy. (5) 01/07/1835 & 07/21/1836 pertaining to inventory of estate.
I have not been able to connect my Thomas & Nancy to any of the other Brothers' lines. Perhaps the above information will help.
I believe that Thomas & Nancy were migrating westward to Texas with the Mauldings & Poers. All 3 families appear on the 1830 Madison Co, TN Census. After Thomas died in 1834 in Shelby Co and I believe Nancy remarried to a Simpson. Their son Jesse continued on to Texas with the Mauldings and Poers settling in Red River/Bowie Co in abt 1835. Jesse rec'd a 2nd class headright grant which he exercised in Harrison Co and from there he migrated to Falls Co, TX. The 1860 Falls Co Census indicates that Jesse was born in Virginia.
I also believe that Thomas' family traveled from Virginia to Logan Co, KY then to Madison Co, TN, then to Washington Co, AR and finally to Bowie/Red River Co, TX.
Can anyone make a connection?

Hello,

Although I have never found evidence that my line of Brothers (NC, SC, AL) is related to yours, I do have some info on your line.

Thomas Brothers was born in Greene/Washington Co., PA around 1750. He married Nancy Dever who was born in Baltimore, MD around 1755. Thomas and Nancy had at least 3 children that I know of: Phillip, Hannah and Joseph. Hannah and Joseph were born in Botetourt Co., VA, where their parents must have moved after they were married. Thomas died in Botetourt in 1815, Nancy had died in 1789. Phillip married Dolly (I think I have her last name somewhere) and they had a daughter named Sally. Phillip was killed by Indians. Hannah married John Ronck and they moved to Putnam, Indiana. Joseph married Elizabeth Moss and also moved to Putnam.

I am guessing that your Sally was related to Thomas, probably a sister. Unfortunately, I don't know who Thomas' parents were.

Hope this helps.

Thomas Nails Brothers grave marker

There is a grave marker in Moody's Chapel Cemetery in Altoona, Etowah Co., Alabama for Thomas Nails Brothers. It says: Pvt NC Militia Revolutionary War 1760-1837. This is a relatively new marker placed by the military at the request of a family member who has basic facts about the soldier. Does anyone know who requested this marker and where they got their info? Was there an original headstone? The gravesite must have been moved from somewhere else, because the cemetery was founded well after Thomas' death (probably 50 years or so after). I think Thomas is the key to Caleb Brothers (SC,AL,AR) parentage. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

BROTHERS, Martha/Matilda abt 1840 Canada

Hi,
I am looking for BROTHERS, Martha or Aglace? born abt 1840 in Canada, probably Quebec. She married Peter Gilbert Goodhue or Gauthier (one surnames for Peter is listed on daughters marriage cert and the other listed on her death cert) and at least one of their daughters were born in Webster, MA, USA on 21 Aug 1865.
I have looked at the census for 1880 Sutton, MA, and have found Peter and Aglase GOODHUE and some of the children. I am waiting for their daughters birth records to confirm the first name.
In the 1870 her name is Martha GOODHUE..
Unable to locate either Peter or Martha/Aglase any earlier in US or Canada.
What can I do that I haven't done already? I ran out of ideas of what's left to search. I believe they died near their daughter in Northbridge, MA. Unfortunately that is on the other side of the US and I am unable to physically searching church records or the graveyards over there personally, Mom is busy working as is my sister and my daughter is busy with college work. I think I've hit the brick wall too many times with my head and my next step flew out! This particular line hasn't moved far in 20 years and I know someone knows how I can break through..

Please help

Thanks
Jean

Re: Information on Leo (Langford) Brothers

Leo was a hitman for Al Capone. I got interested when I was researching the Brothers family and found some distant relatives in MN stating that Jesse James family from Kansas were kin...so I wondered if there was a link somehow to my Brothers family from NC or TN and AL especially with the James family having kin in AL
