Hi Rhonda--

I can't help you much on your genealogy although my great grandmother was a Cathey born in middle tennesse where I now live, and I have collected a lot of information on the Catheys. I have not found much about my great grandmother's direct ancestors.

I am a descendent of Ephraim Daniel Peacock who built the first log cabin at Strawberry, Arkansas in 1869. He was the first appointed postmaster, and served from August 27, 1877 through Novewmber 9, 1880. He owned all of the present town of Catheytown, AR. In 1878 he sold 10 acres to J. A. Cathey who set up a merchandise store that year. In 1880 census he lived in Reede Creek township, AR in Lawrence County. I know this is not the information you are looking for, but thought it might be of interest to you.

Sincerely,
Loren

Richard Cathey father of Laney Cathey

I have been backtracking Laney Cathey, born 1877 TX or TN; he died in TX, so may have been born there. However, his parents Richard Cathey and Katherine Beaty/Batey were married in Mcnairy, TN in 1877. I am trying to find where Richard was born/raised, and am pointed to MS. I can find only one record there with a Richard that might be him, but nothing from any other census except the one showing he and Laney in Ellis, TX, 1880. Has anyone any suggestion on where I can look for other records for this family in TN or MS? Tishimongo, MS is where I found a Richard in census, and this is very close to the TN county....

I just checked today (Aug. 30) the community part of Ancestry.com and found your post. I do not have any knowledge at all of a Harvey and James. Where they Mike's children by his 3rd marriage? I haven't been able to find when Mike died, moved, etc., but his 3rd wife stayed in TN and lived with a daughter after something happened to Mike. I read in a Houston Co. book that listed taxes that he stopped paying taxes in 1892 (I think), so I assumed he died that year. I knew that on his Civil War pension application that he listed the ages of children who could not have been his and Amanda's. There are just a lot of holes in my information. Maybe you can fill some of them in. I really would like to go to Houston Co.

In the Williamson County Probate and Court Records and Divoices. Under the will of George Cathey and Nelly. I have read somewhere Nelly is another name for Elenior. When you look at the 1850 census Elenior has a 26 year old son in the will it says something about minior children and she is in between two other of her children George and William. William is my greatgreat grandfather with his second wife Jurnita Jerushia not sure if the same woman or not. But he has a son John A and daughter Margaret Armstrong Cathey Carson (my great grandma). She named a son John Armstrong Carson 1895. In Strewart County there is a George marrying a Elenior Honer Armstrong 1805. Please let know what you think since there are at least one George for every Cathey at there.

I was doing research on George and Elenior Armstrong Cathey having George past in 1835 and in his will it mentions children. I have put John A 1815 in this family as the others in this family all seem to have the named a son John A. However, John A seens to be a family name for Catheys. Not sure this is the same but wondering your thoughts on it. My relationship is thru their son William R born in 1825 in Williamson County TN.

John Brandon, Sr. and Mary Cathey had five children together before she died and he married the widow Elizabeth Lock, with whom he had no children. Their children intermarried.

John Brandon, Jr, Esq. m. Elizabeth Patten
Richard Brandon m. Margaret Lock
Anne Brandon m. Francis Lock
William Brandon m. Ann Cathey d/o James Cathey (brother of Archibald and John) and his Ann
Mary Brandon m. Matthew Lock

And Dr. Henry Cathey believes that Mary Cathey m. John Brandon Sr. is the daughter of John Cathey & unknown (I have Martha with a question mark?), the wife before Ann, not that Ann and Archibald's daughter before the widow married John Cathey, his brother. John, Archibald and James are all sons of Alexander Cathey.

At least I THINK I have it right!

Sally Brandon

Re: Sarah Cathey, b. 1700, m. Samuel Givens, b. 1697, IR, d. VA

Maureen,
I, too, am descended from Samuel and Sarah Cathey Givens, and have spent the better part of the last six years researching this branch of my tree. To be more specific, I am descended from Samuel through his oldest son John. The branch I'm researching eventually marries into the Mullens family.
I'm wondering how we're related, how your summer project is going, how much you've found, and what I can do to help you. I have copies of the wills of both Samuel and his oldest son John, and have been to Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, where they are buried, so I also have pictures of the church. I also have a copy of the estate inventory for Samuel Givens, which is signed by John Givens, Samuel Givens (son), and by John Cathey. I also have census records for the younger generations in my branch. If we're related through that branch, let me know and I can send those as well.
I mentioned earlier having been to the "Old Stone Church." I went in search of headstones, but to my dismay, found once I returned home that the headstones had been moved at one point by a caretaker who thought it would be easier to mow the grass if the headstones were moved. Unfortunately, when he moved them, he failed to record where they had been and where he left them. There are two cemeteries on the grounds of Augusta Stone. The "newer" of the two is fenced in, and is to your right if your back is to the church. the older is just to the left of the newer. Samuel, Sarah and John are all buried in the older cemetery, somewhere. If anything I've told you interests you in the slightest, I can be reached by e-mail at j_obryan1@yahoo.com. Contact me there, let me know what I have that you need, and I'll send it to you. Have a great day, and happy hunting!

Jeff O'Bryan
j_obryan1@yahoo.com
Thanks for a great posting. Alexander, immigrant, is my line on down to the Lockes and Tabbs. In cleaning up my databse, I found I had no parents listed for Mary Elizabeth Pinkney. I went first, to see what GenForum had to say and this is what I found, posted by Henry Cathey on December 7, 2001: "Michael: We cannot find any reference to Pinkneys in the Cumberland Valley, Penn. or in Chester Co, Pa, New Castle County, DE. or in Cecil County, MD. However, a record does show a Chris. Pinkney in Calvert County, Maryland before 1672 and other Pinkneys farther north in Anne Arundel County and south of the Severn River in 1705 through 1712. This appears to be near present day Annapolis. Jonathan Pinkney settle in Annapolis before 1777. No direct Cathey connection has been found."

So I'm wondering.........Is Mary Elizabeth Pinkney Alexander's wife or not? I can find nothing in the local library on the Pinkney's on line that sheds any light for me. I've checked various on line books as well.

Ann Cathey who married Joshua Penix

My brother and I have been researching MOORE, RAMEY, and PENIX, and have recently discovered a fascinating connection to the CATHEY family. However, we have encountered a conflicting issue concerning the parents of Ann CATHEY who married Joshua PENIX on 15 July 1784 in Rowan Co. NC. (Joshua PENIX later moved to Russell and Scott Co. VA. where our other lines join in.)

We were given an undocumented file that lists Ann CATHEY's parents as John CATHEY and Mary IRWIN.
Ann is listed as Mary Ann CATHEY, b. 1765 in NC
Ann's father John CATHEY is listed as b. 1739 in PA, d. 1824 in Maury, TN
Ann's mother Mary IRWIN is listed as b. 1738 in Chester, PA.
Mary IRWIN and John CATHEY were married in 1758 in Rowan Co. NC
John CATHEY is also listed as the son of Alexander CATHEY and Mary PINKNEY.

The children of John CATHEY and Mary IRWIN are:
1. Mary Ann, b. 1765, NC (married Joshua PENIX)
2. James, b. 1759
3. Jean, b. 1761
4. Agnes, b. 1763
5. William, b. 1766
6. Hugh, b. 1768
7. John, b. 1770

A different conflicting file we have on John CATHEY indicates he married Jean (unknown) and had these children:
1. James, b. 1740 in Ulster, IRE
2. Jean, b. 1744 in Augusta Co. VA
3. Hugh, b. in Rowan Co. NC
4. John, b. 1750/64 in Rowan
5. William, b. 1750/64 in Rowan
6. Agness, (married William Penick)
7. Ann, (married Joshua Penix)

These two files seem to match in terms of family names, but in addition to showing a different wife for John, the children's dates are off by many years!

We are hoping to determine who actually were the parents of Ann CATHEY who married Joshua PENIX. Can any CATHEY researchers help us resolve this issue? We would appreciate any corrections, help, or suggestions you can send our way!

Best wishes...
Phillip Moore

I know you posted this so long ago, but I have just started doing family research on my mother's family--Cathey. William Washington was my greatgrandfather, but I have never heard of the brothers. I am really looking for Mike--his father. I recently read that he moved to MO, but I cannot find any proof. How are you related to William? I have been trying to find you. Was my Uncle Paul your father?

Sarah Cathey born 1697 in Antrim Ustler Ireland. Married first Samuel Givens born 1693 in Antrim. They had 10 children. After Samuel's death she married Robert Allen in 1744 in Frederick County, Virginia. They had one child, Benjamin, my 4th great grandfather. Robert Allen (or Allan) was a widower also, he had first married Deborah Montgomery and they had 7 children. So Robert and Sarah raised 18 children, many of whom played key roles in the War of Independence. I have much more information if you would like to contact me. I would also like to know how you are related. j.allen@bresnan.net

"My" Sarah Allen's maiden name is Blythe. Her husband was E.N. Allen. As far as I know there is no Robert in my Allen line. They were from Mississippi--Tippah and Benton Counties. Sorry.
Carol B. Tatum

Cathey Settlement in Rowan County, NC

I am researching Cathey's Creek Settlement, or Cathey’s Settlement, in what later became known as Mill Bridge (now called Mt. Ulla) in Rowan County, North Carolina.

These Cathey's were:
James, George (Sr. & Jr.), Cathey, & Andrew Cathey

There were at least 26 other families in this settlement by spring 1749:
Thomas Bell
John Brandon (Sr. & Jr.)
Richard Brandon
William Brandon
Alexander Dobbin
Thomas Gillespie
James Graham (Sr. & Jr.)
John Graham
Richard Graham
John Holmes
Felix Kennedy
George Locke
John Locke
Matthew Locke
James Marlin
John Sill
John Withrow

If you have information about these family and / or questions please contact me. I hope to pool together as much information on this settlement to sustain their history of the area.

Kelly Miller
http://kindredroots.com
