Dear Michelle. Thanks for your note, Marions family were from Lambeth , Her parents were bombed out during the blitz of 1940 and settled in Surbiton.where Marion was born . I have tried with some success to trace her family tree, bearing in mind that there was a lot of internal migration during the 19th and early 20th centuries. I am sure that I have established the earlest link 1841 to Luvington in Somerset (Agricultural workers). Marion is not aware of any relatives in Croydon but bearing in mind the fairly close proximity between Lambeth and Croydon and the number of unknown ancesters it is quite possible. I will however ask her two Brothers who are older if they have any knowledge.(the oldest is 80 and has a good memory)
very best regards Terry

Hi Michelle,

I'm looking for my grandfather's family. His name was Norman Clare and I think he was born in Liverpool. I think he had a brother named Samuel.

Let me know if this rings a bell for you or any of your family members. Unfortunately, his dad took off on the family and so I don't have much to go on. My grandpa passed away a number of years ago.

We live near Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Thanks,
Shelley Clare

Hi all Clares out there - I am Karyn Clare, living in NZ, descended from John Clare (baptist minister in Wiltshire, UK in the 1840s). I think there is a line of Clares from Wiltshire. John Clare had a son, Joseph Clare, who married Eliza Attwater, also from Wiltshire, and they had eight children - including Philemon Jay Clare, from whom I am descended. The baptist Clares seemed to move about a lot - they went from Downton in Wiltshire, to Denbigshire, Wales, then up to Scotland. Their children seemed to be drifting towards London. If anyone out there is connected to this branch of the family - let me know. I have an interesting family tree done by someone tracing the Clares and the Attwaters. cheers Karyn

Hi Jan,

My Great-Great grandfather was Robert Clare born approx 1858(profession noted as Greengrocer in 1896). I have a photo of Robert and his family in 1896(including Daniel Clare my great grandfather) outside their cottage in Mosley Common, Worsley. I believe this was the original starting point of the Bridgewater canal, so it may be that the Clare family you are interested in are related to mine? The photo I have includes 7 children alongside my great-great grandparents.

I have attached a copy of the photo that includes some annotations made by my Grandfather Stanley Clare.

I hope its of interest to you, good luck with your search.

Daniel Clare

Hello Joanne,
My name is Gerald Clare. My family tree starts in Great Yarmouth with my g.grandfather then is concentrated in the 19th century in Rotherhithe, Bermondsey and Southwark in London. In the 20th century the family has become more spread out of course but still mostly in Southern England.

My family tree is at a brick wall at the moment. I've been unsuccessful in finding my g.grandfather John Clare's marriage certificate to an Eliza Prior. He was born around 1817 so I guess they would have married about 20 years later around 1837. So it's that date when the big change happened. Theoretically there should be a marriage certificate.

Any suggestions?

Gerald Clare

Hi

I am interested in any information on the Clare family who worked the Bridgewater Canal 1840's-1900's.

Daniel Clare born 1820-1 was the head of the family born Preston according to 1861, 71, 91 census.
I appreciate it is some time since a query was posted ,but have been engaged in my own family research. My wifes maiden name was Clare .She was brought up in Surbiton ,surrey after her parents were bombed out of flat in Lambeth ,London. I have done some research on Clare family , and hve found a line in Lambeth going back to Luvington, somerset in 1841. Incidentally her mother (Surname Smith) came from Westminster. Marion ,my wife has several relatives as well as two brothers carrying the Clare surname. Regards Terence Spencer

It is currently limited to the father John Edward CLARE, married to Mary Ann HOME with four children: Phoebe, John, Albert and Hugh Percy. Hugh Percy CLARE went on to marry Evelyn Jessie SMITH.

--Philip
I feel certain this man who has the first name of Clare is named for his mother's maiden name. If that is so it would mean a Miss Clare married a Mr. Moffitt ca.1884. Thanks Carolyn

Re: Charles Clare - Toronto ON

I've been digging around and have discovered this.

Charles H. Clare and Sophie Sadie Algeo were married Dec. 1891 in Toronto. However, Sophie must have died in childbirth within a year of their marriage. So far I have not located a copy of her death records.

Charles H. Clare married Sophie's sister, SARAH Algeo. Sarah is the mother of Norman, Susan and an unamed stillborn. Sarah died with the stillborn baby in Nov. 1912.

Charles Clare (b. 1 Feb 1847, father of Charles H. Clare) came to Canada from England in 1870 with his wife Susan Brown. They seem to have only had the one child, Charles H. Clare. The Clares went to the Church of England.

When Patrick Brown and Susan "Susie" Clare (daughter of Charles H. Clare and Sarah Algeo) were married, they were both Episcopal.

Haven't found anything on "Annie" (Clare) and Bert Armstrong yet.

Jess

You may not get this question, since this topic is many years old, but I was wondering what references you use to trace the genealogy of the Kings of Leister, specifically the woman Aoife MacMurrough. I am trying to trace the historical, non-mythological usages of the name Aoife, and sadly not having much luck. Whatever assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

- Molly

Re: Charles Clare - Toronto ON

I am aware of Charles Henry CLARE, b. Jan 1873 in Welland Co. ON. On Dec. 23, 1891 he and Sophie Sadie ALGEO (b.Sep 1, 1872 , Co. Leitrim, Ireland) were married in Toronto, Ontario.

I know of one of their children, Norman Charles CLARE, b. Aug 20, 1897 in Toronto.

Charles Clare rode a white horse at the front of Toronto's "Orange Day Parade" as King Billy -- which meant he was a staunch Protestant, not Catholic. Is it possible Patrick Brown was Catholic -- Susan would have been disowned for marrying a Catholic if her father was a Protestant.

My children are g-g-g-grandchildren of Charles CLARE and Sophie ALGEO.

Yours sincerely, Lorna

Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Charles Wheeler and Ann F. Wheeler, maiden name unknown.

Thanks, R. Brakhage
