Paul in my posting I did list William Cobb Jr.'s birth as Sept.18,1630. It was Giles who was born about 1635. In a transcript from Robert Cobb it has Gylles (Giles) as the son of Samuel Cobb b. aft 1597, son of Morgan and Alice Hopgood? Cobb. I had originally discounted Samuel as I had a death date on him as around 1625, 10yrs. before Giles was born. But then I picked up fragmented records that led to the possibility that Samuel didn't die on that date. I'm currently going through the OPC's of the whole of Dorset County but they are fragmented and or years missing. All thanks to Oliver Cromwell's Troops. As an example when Cromwell's forces were besieging Lady Banks at Corfe Castle, they mounted the cannons on the roofs in Swanage and used Parish Records as wadding for their cannon balls, supposedly laughing about how they were destroying both towns. I'll post more info on Giles and Henry if I can get something definitive. Cliff

Cliff,

Your date of birth (abt. 1635) of William Cobb (Jr.) conflicts with another record; his baptism date that also records those for his brothers. However, I believe it is off a few years (either 1631 or 1632 but not likely 1635).
"Registers of the Parish of Swanage", published by the Parish Record Society at Corfe Castle, had a baptismal date for him as 18 Sep 1630 (Swanage, Dorset, England).
Yet same record has marriage date of his parents as 13 Jul 1630. So one record's year (possibly his baptism more likely than parents' marriage) may be wrong (1631 or 1632 and not 1635 for his baptism?).
By same record, for Augustine Cobb, the baptismal date was 6 Jan 1633/34; for Edward Cobb, 26 Nov 1636; for Phineas Cobb, 6 Jun 1646. Thus their births were before the baptismal dates but exactly when not provided, but likely not much earlier than baptism, given the separation of dates (other than William possibly being 1632, then followed by brothers in 1634, 1636, 1646). Other children in gap of 1638 - 1644 either not recorded, destroyed or they did not survive birth or infancy for a baptism.

Per --http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~harrisonre...-- previously accessed as "Harrison Genealogy Repository", by author Becky Bass Bonner to background of Edward Cobb (son of William Cobb), "The Parish Registers of St. Edward King and Martyr (the Church to which Morgan and Alice Cobb were devoted, as appears in their wills) were destroyed during the Civil Wars in 1644 by the Parliamentary Army."

In reference to "Swanage MARRIAGES 1565-1841", transcribed from parish registers and donated to the OPC Project (OPC Dorset), previously online. We have a record of Cobb marriages in 1600's Swanage:
1 Jun 1619, Nycholas Cobb married Margaret Leed
13 Jul 1630, William Cobb married Dorothie Savie
16 Jan 1636, Henry Cobb married Winnefred Bushler
7 May 1649, John Cobb married Margery Gover
2 Apr 1650, Henry Vye married Dorathie Cobb
29 Apr. 1669, Phineas Cobb married Elizabeth Paine (had a son named John Cobb, b. 8 Apr 1672, Swanage, possibly more.)
4 May 1681, Henry Marsh married Mary Cobb (family relation of this Mary Cobb not determined)

However Dorothy Cobb who married in 1650 may be a dau. of William Cobb and Dorothy (Savie) Cobb, and born also abt. 1632.

"Dorchester: Baptisms Holy Trinity Church 1670-1738" (Transcribed by Michael Russell OPC for Dorchester April 2012; online) has the following:

16 Dec 1685 - John son of William COBBE
29 May 1687 - Gyles [Giles in BT's] son of William COBB
22 Nov 1688 - Elizabeth daughter of William COBB

A grandson named Giles COBB had his name in a bequest (along with others not named Cobb) of will dated 05 Aug 1703 (proved 28 May 1706) of Grace Dashwood, Widow of Dorchester, Dorset. Possibly the one b. 1687 above.

The many given names are kept in the family as William, John, and Morgan so Giles also became used as a family name of those there in Swanage.

Giles and Henry were listed in Swanage records as posted in 2005 by yourself but I have seen no further record but the above baptisms would appear to be children of William Cobb Jr. or maybe a son William of your Giles Sr.
Glad for the discovery (can't say definitely some is a "recent" discovery since you posted a version of this in 2005). Much needs to be learned from our Dorset, English researchers (any out there?) for these Swanage records to dig up and add to these "Taunton line" roots as well as hopefully additional Y-DNA of any descendant(s) in England from those who had not immigrated to Mass. You certainly have added to the known family roots Cobb lines of Taunton, Mass.and I commend your efforts.
However, I am not concentrating on all aspects of the Taunton family line but have data of many Cobb families that started in New England area after immigrating from England. Mostly working on the Barnstable, Boston and many unlinked Cobb families (some which do get tied to one of the lines). I will keep an eye on and research time to get more on these Swanage & Dorset-area Cobb families, hoping there are are others to put some eyes and time on the goal of getting this Cobb line as complete as possible (here and in England). Good luck.

Regards, in a renewed attempt of a reply,
Paul Cobb,
File Manager, Barnstable and Boston lines for the "Cobb & Cobbs" website: --http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/-- [Cobb: A working history - still in progress; waiting on updates this year]
Giles (Gylles) Cobb

Recent discoveries On the "Taunton Cobb" Line, i.e. William Cobb Jr. family descendancy, brother of immigrants Augustine and Edward Cobb, led to the re-investigation of the Dorset OPC's. There seems to be acouple of Swanage/Corfe Castle Cobb's that aren't accounted for. Two Evident are Giles and Henry Cobb. Giles was apparently born abt.1635, in Corfe Castle and died 1694. Abt. 1660, he married a Jane LNU, (1640-1735?). Giles had children; Mary,b.1661, Morgan,b.1664, Nicholas,b.1666, Margery,b.1669. Giles birth would probably make him a son of one of Morgan Cobb's(1562-1620)children. I think we can rule out John b.1609,he had two Dau. b. England then came to the Colonies. William b.1605. his Letters of Administration, list his sons and Giles is not one of them, Samuel b.abt 1597, died abt.1625, had 2 known children. That leaves us with Richard b.abt 1600, and Nicholas b.abt.1597. On Jun.1,1619, in Swanage, Nicholas marr. Margaret Leed. I only have been able to find records on his children as being a Dau. unk., who died Jan.24,1619/20, a Dau. Mary bap.Jan.20,1619/20,Swanage, d.Jan.29,1620/21. I have a hunch Giles is a son of Nicholas b.1597. Does anyone have information on this Giles as to his parents and family? Any help would be appreciated. As a side note, it seems that the second group of this family that immigrated in the 1870/80's, and settled in Texas, Missouri, etc. would descend from Augustine Cobb. Thus far none from that group has submitted a YDNA sample. Cliff Cobb

A John W. Cobb of Buckfield, ME conflict

Looking to resolve this conflict of persons named John W. Cobb as follows:

(1) John William Cobb, of the Barnstable line, born 3/5/1856 in Biddeford, ME (as Mar 1856 in census), son of William Cobb & Sarah Seavey (last name as Leary in John's death record). John William Cobb died in Buckfield, Oxford, ME on 9/4/1915. John W. Cobb married a Sarah E. (LNU), b. May 1868 in Conn. (her parents also b. Conn.). Per the Buckfield, Oxford, ME census in 1900, they had a son Clarence E. Cobb, b. Jan. 1897 in Maine. John's father William Cobb was living with them.

(2) John W. Cobb, b. abt 1866 or 1862 (marriage record), son of William Cobb & Sarah (LNU). John W. Cobb married a Sarah E. Brown, in 1892 in Mass (b. 1867 in marriage record and as 1867 by 1910 census); she b. in Mass. (her parents William Brown and Elizabeth also b. Mass.) Per Buckfield, Oxford, ME 1910 census, this John W. and wife Sarah E. Cobb had a son Arthur W. Cobb, aged 13 (b. 12/21/1896 in Buckfield, ME). His name was not in 1910 census there.

Is John W. the same as John William Cobb, as both in Buckfield, ME; both had parents William and Sarah, but differently named sons born almost the same time? Was the name of their son changed between censuses? Yet his wife listed as born in Conn. as were her parents in 1900 but as Mass. in 1910 (as were her parents)?

Anyone know of these Cobb families or other data?

Thanks,
Paul Cobb

Usual Cobb is listed in the death records in Mt Pleasant, Iowa in Henry County (found in Public Library in Mt Pleasant). Says he was buried Mt Pleasant, but no cemetery record of him, though a record of Sally his wife is found in Forest Home Cemetery. Sally's name was Sally Phelps - according to a biography of Usual and Sally's son Luman found in the Public Library in Mt. Ida, Iowa. The biography is in a book on Civil War Veterans of Iowa. Luman lived in Grant County WI when he enlisted in the Civil War, but after the war moved to Correctionville, Iowa. Luman is my Great Grandfather and I have a lot of info on this family including court records involving Usual and some of the sons who moved to Mt Pleasant, IA. Reply if interested.

Kaitlyn, Marjorie is my aunt. Look at my family tree in ancestry.com - Andrew Jackson Cobb of MO - and you'll find a lot of data. I think Marjorie has all of the info that Uncle Allan had gathered. I can send you a couple of Word docs with a lot of info if you would like them. You can contact me at alancobb@juno.com

Samuel Cobb and second wife Judath Peake had a Thomas born 1781 in SC. John was born in 1786 in SC. Asa Cobb, son of Samuel, and his wife Anna O'Banion had
Thomas W born 1828 and John born 1825.
Recently I found the inventory of Samuel Cobb. Can not find a will. I know Thomas W is the son of Asa as he signed his marriage papers. Looking for the cemetery of Thomas, I have his inventory of belongings. He was married less than ten years to Pamela Permelia Ann Ingram. I feel sure she remarried, however I do not have her name or what cemetery.

Mr. Cobb,

I have nothing to provide you in research of the Virginia's Isle of Wight's Cobb(s) families as my area in research is those different Cobb family lines emigrating to New England at the start in the 1600's and later.
"Cobb & Cobbs", which will have an updating of the files soon, has that branch with Betty Atkinson as the contact person (see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cobb/iowco...).
Several Cobb lines emigrated from several areas of England to Virginia (2) and to New England (3) and there are other lines not connected to those listed. I have no explanation of any Cobb from Somerset England transporting to Virginia as all had different reasons (political, religious, family, financial, etc.) to provide the reason of emigration.

Paul Cobb,
File Manager, Barnstable and Boston lines for the Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/
[A working history - still in progress]

Do you have any information on a Curtis Cobb, born ca 1786 in North Carolina. He was in Georgia in the early 1800s (Burke County and then Emanuel County). His wife's name was Matilda (in 1850 census). He had two sons: Jacob (b. ca 1807);Brittain (born 1825); and, at least two daughters. I have been trying to locate info on Curtis' parents names! Current DNA testing links "our" Cobbs to Nicholas Cobb of Isle of Wight, VA!

Re: Cobb Dorset Somerset conection

Gary Cobb,

The Cobb families from Swanage, Dorset (in the USA as Taunton, MA branch) are not related to or connected ancestrally (as far as is currently known) or by DNA to the Isle of Wight [Virginia] (aka IOW branch) families. The Taunton branch has DNA shown online as do other branches. Please note the different branches are unrelated per DNA; check http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cobb/ - until proven otherwise - (website has updates forthcoming on several branches).
If you had two different lines of families connected by a marriage, their ancestry would not necessarily connect before the marriage. So far, very few marriages found connecting the Barnstable and Taunton lines and another marriage in Barnstable to connect to a Boston line has been found, causing descendants to have two different lines ancestrally.
If your DNA matches the IOW line only, then there is no connection to the Taunton branch, the only branch originating from Dorset area. More detail is needed on your mystery unless you have a new branch before unknown and found by proven research.

Paul Cobb (a "Cobb & Cobbs" file mgr.)

Hi, please if you get this post (it has been 13 years since you posted), reply to me. My husband is descended through Curtis and Matilda Cobb's son, Brittain Cobb. Mable/Matilda Cobb did marry Nathaniel Cowart, and she is Brittain's sister. In probate records, Nathaniel Cowart received Matilda's share of her father's estate. Brittain was administrator of the estate! Brittain married Mary Ann Brown, in Emanuel County. They moved to Bryan County, GA, and had five children: America, Mississippi, Perry, Berrien and Andrew J. (my husband's line). Brittain died in 1864, as a result of a wound received in the Battle of Nance Shop, VA.

Hi, my husband is descended through Curtis and Matilda Cobb's son, Brittain Cobb. Brittain married Mary Ann Brown, in Emanuel County, GA, and they moved to Bryan County, GA. They had five children: America, Mississippi, Perry, Berrien and Andrew J. My husband is descended through Andrew J. Cobb! Brittain served in the Civil War, and died in 1864, from wounds received at the battle at Nance Shop, VA. Brittain was the administrator of his father's estate, after Curtis Cobb died. He had a brother named Jacob, and several sisters. One sister was named Mable Matilda Cobb! In probate papers, each child received their share of their father's estate. I cannot find out Curtis' wife's maiden name, what became of his son, Jacob, and anything about Curtis' ancestry. My husband and I did find land records for Emanuel County, for Curtis and Brittain. Their lands were on Reedy Creek, Nathan Creek and Fifteen Mile Creek, about five miles north of present-day George L. Smith State Park (Fifteen Mile Creek runs through it- intersects the river that goes under the bridge in the Park). Curtis Cobb moved from Burke County, GA, to Emanuel County. He helped establish three churches between the two counties.

Looking for any info on Dorothy Cobb Mitchell. Listed as Dorothy Cobb in 1949 Atlanta City Directory living on Utoy Rd. Listed as Mrs. R.C. Mitchell of Jacksonville FL in obituary of her adoptive father, Ernest J. Cobb in 1953. Had two male children who were taken and adopted out in early 1950s, one possibly named Wayne. Dorothy's adoptive mother, Mrs. May Hogan Cobb died in Atlanta in 1963. Dorothy probably divorced Mitchell and remarried at some point but I do not have any other names for her. Dorothy's adoptive brother was James Hogan of Atlanta Georgia. He died in 1974. Dorothy is my aunt and I am searching for her children.
Indeed Arthur Frederick Cobb was named in honor of Cobb's Wren, which he shot in 1909. This is an endemic species in the Falklands. Apart from being a professional farmer he also was a nateuralist who wrote 'Wild Life in the Falklands', published in 1910, and 'Birds of the Falkland Islands - A record of Observation with the Camera', published in 1933. It would be helpful if anyone could provide me with his date of birth and death?

Jan B. Kaiser
(the Netherlands)
