I am the grand daughter of William Andy Cogdill (Sept 10, 1884 - May 10, 1946) from the Del Rio, Tn area. My grandmother was Jeanette (Nettie) Lou Rogers Williamson (Oct 24, 1884 - April 13, 1961). They had 2 daughters, moved to Spartanburg, SC where they are buried. I think he had a brother somewhere in SC.

Will you please send me the Cogdill line as well. I am a descendant of Nelson Crowder Cogdill (B1841 MO - a nephew of Susannah Cogdill Crowder). I am trying to trace the Cogdill family to find Nelson Crowder Cogdill's father and mother.

Thank you,
M

Two errors just surfaced in the listing I posted. Under "1.8 Elizabeth Jane": Gilbert Frost died in 1884; Elizabeth Jane died about 6 weeks after her 5th child was born; Her 3rd child was named Elizabeth but did not die of Cholera...it was her mother who died of cholera.

Re: Frederick H. Cogdill 1768

Frederick Cogdill migrated with his family to Kentucky (1795), Tennessee (1810), back to Kentucky (1815), and on to Missouri (1820) together with his neighbors (Daniel and Jacob Shipman; Thomas Harrington;). They originated in North Carolina where they are believed to have been related to the William Cogdill and John Cogdill families. There is a lot of circumstancial evidence for this belief. Some of this info is recorded in the Erma Carmichael book "A History of Cook, Cogdill, Taylor and Allied Families" which is available from the publisher.

What follows is an outline of the info I have on the Frederick Cogdill line so far. I can send it to you in Excell format which is easier to read and is clear on what info came from the book and what came from other sources.

Just follow the format of 1.0 has children 1.1,1.2,etc. and 1.1 has children 1.1.1,1.1.2,1.1.3 and so on.

b. is "born"; d. is "died"; m. is "married"; pb. is "place buried".

LINE OF FREDERICK COGDILL

1.0	Frederick Cogdill b. 1768 Rutherford Co. –or- Tyron Co.
If Joseph T. Cogdill was born in Feb. 1889; if he was a Baptist preacher in the Hartford, TN area; If he married Mary Shelton; If your husband's aunts and uncles on the Cogdill side were Thelma, Lura, Olenis, Issac, and Tiny; If all that is true, then I can help you with the line starting at Joseph and going back up the line to William Cogdill Sr. born in the 1750's in England.

I remember her telling us about how small she was when she was born and that her mother died in childbirth. She had an aunt Berthie who if I am not mistaken raised her.
Do you have something that indicates that Elijah is buried at Addie? George (son of Elijah) is buried there, as you're facing the cemetery, on the rise to the right at the back. I've been there many times but didn't have any indication Elijah might be there. Where should I look?

P.S. I have the Jackson County Heritage books. I do know that just up the road from Addie was Cogdill land. There is a smaller Cogdill only cemetery a little further on (as you're headed away from Sylva) where George's son John's family is buried.

I'm one of her sister's great-grandchildren. Mary Atheline (1881-1954) married Ferry Candler Snyder (1877-1967). They left Jackson county when he got hired by the railroad and spent most of the rest of their lives in Henderson county. (Ferry was one of Hute's brothers.)

I'm not home right now, so don't have my info at hand, but you might want to join NC-JACKSO (Jackson Co., NC) mailing list.

I have both the Jackson county Heritage books. Both William and Mary Ann Cogdill Clayton and Hute and his wife are buried in the same cemetery as Elijah Cogdill. This is Addie Cemetery, which is just off Scott's Creek Road, outside Sylva, NC.

Dana, Thanks for the reply. I have very little information on my ancestors-I hit a brick wall in two directions. My GGfather was Nelson Crowder Cogdell (3-15-1838 to 7-2-1927) (Listed as N.C. and Nelson Cogsdale in the Confederate War records-signed on in north Texas) after which he does not appear again until after 1900. My GGmother was Mary Ellen Fowler (3-10-1847 to 10-12-1884) who by family stories was a Native American. My Grandfather was James Andrew Cogdell. I do not know where my GGfather or GGmother were born or lived prior to living in Arkansas. They both lived there and are buried in Pike County, Arkansas. My grandfather lived in Arkansas all my life, but I do not know where he was born.

Whatever you can do is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mary

The first Frederick (1768-1834) brought the family to MO. Among other children he had a son, William (1801- ), who had a son also named Frederick the grandfather. You would need to go back beyond your grandfather to the mid-1800's to make some connection to this line. There are many Cogdills working on the MO line, so this might not be too difficult.

I can give you the info on the family tree leading to Eunice. Also, I have the statement made by the "old country doctor" (Dr. B.P. Ford) contained in the "Cook-Cogdill-Taylor" book by Erma Carmichael concerning Lester and Eunice who he said lived about 4 miles from him when he wrote in 1977.

My husband's great-grandmother was Anna Cogdill daughter of Joseph and Minerva Cogdill. They moved to MO from Idaho/Wyoming. There are many Cogdill's in and around Washakie County, WY and Oregon. Maybe Drewery's daughter and husband went that way. (?) Just an idea.

It's been a while since the previous posting, but I am now to the Cogdill part of our family and hope you know something about them. My husband's great-grandfather was Thomas Cogdill. He lived in TN, possibly Newport, but that is all I know except that he married Sally Ann Rathbone and had a child named Pearl Cogdill. Does any of this ring a bell?
I was reading more posts between yourself and June Joyner and saw the name Thomas somewhere and was hoping this is the same family. I would be glad to share what I have on the rest of his family if this is the correct family.
Thanks so much.
melanie james

1868 is probably a typo on Sarah's birthdate as that would make her only 12 when her first son was born. More likely she was born in 1858 making her 22 when her first son was born.

1900 Census for Greene County, TN 9th districe shows Joseph Cogdill (b. 2/1842) age 58 and wife Sarah E. ____ (b. 9/1868) with 4 children: James F. (b.3/1880); Kayte (b.3/1895); Joseph M. (b. 2/1897); Jessie L. (daughter b. 6/1899). This appears to be the correct line except for the name of older Joseph's wife. Could your Joseph be the younger Joseph M.? I have no info on any of the children going forward.

Lenard B. Cogdill was also my G' Grandfather. My Grandmother was his daughter Lockie Adeline Cogdill, born May 23, 1874. I have a copy of Lenards application for a Civil War pension, and he states in it that he has "eleven children living and four dead". This application was dated May 31, 1902. I have found eight of he and Nancy's children. All his children may be listed in the book by Erma Carmichael, I don't know. I have spoken with some Rogers' in South Carolina that are descendants through Andrew Clayton Cogdill b. Nov. 15. 1865. I'm still working on this as time permits, and would love to share what info I have if anyone's interested.
