I recently found who I think is my grx2 grandmother Mary MATHES/MATHUS/MATHIS and her 1st son in the 1880 census of Jewell Co, KS in the household of Lafayette COUCH. She is listed as his niece, married, and has a one year old son also in the household by the name of Vernon/Veirnan. Does anyone have any information on who the parents or spouse of Mary might be?

I have not had much luck with finding out where Mary came from, but will try to put this back on my research burner. Lafayette was my grgr Grandfather. Lafayette was married to Mary Jane McKinney, then to a Worick. If you happen to find anything, please let me know and I'll do the same!

Thanks Darren. I guess the possiblity exists that Mary was either Lafayette's niece, his wife's niece, or perhaps Mary was the wife of one of his nephews. I'm curious as to why she is listed as married, but her spouse is not present in the household.

My ancestor, Mary A. MATHES, was married to William MATHES b. Dec. 1840 in Indiana or Illinois. From word of mouth passed down in the family, her maiden name was PHIFER or some variant, but this may not be the case, I've found no verification. Most of the census information has her birth occuring Oct. 1854 in Kentucky. She and William had 6 children live to adulthood.

#1 child:Robert Vernon, was born Jan. 1877 in Illinois.

The remainder of their children were born in Jewell Co,KS.
#2Unknown daughter b. abt 1880 m: Unknown CROSS.
#3Gertrude Belle b. Nov. 1881.
#4William Logan b. Dec. 1885.
#5Grant David b. Sep. 1888 and
#6Joseph Marvin b. Oct. 1894.

They migrated to Custer Co, OK by 1900 where William died abt. 1905. Mary was still living in the 1920 census.
I'll continue searching and let you know what I come up with.

My Great Grandma Mathes was Mary Ann Fifer and she was Married to William David Mathes Who was born Dec 4 1840 In Knoxville Tenn.but that is all I know about them.

I have William Mathes born in Indiana, not Tennessee. This is based on census records. I'd be interested in corresponding more about this family. I've not had much luck going farther back with them.

Thanks Kelly I am in the process of updating Robert Vernon Mathes hystory as He was my mothers dad. The birth dates and dates of William David Mathes is dates taken out of Gertude Bell Mathes Nails Bible, and I have a photo copy of the page in my Family tree Book of the SChoonmakers and Mathes that was made in 1996.
