I am also your cousin.. But your dad died when I was 16, which was 1988 I believe and not 1990. Your dad had 5 same parent siblings, not 7. Three sisters and 2 brothers. Richard, Junior, LaVerne, Carolyn and Kathy. Kathy lives in Texas. My mom, LaVerne, still lives in Kentucky. Aunt Nancy and Uncle Junior still live in Scottsburg. Uncle Richard is still in Indiana as well. Was your mom Catherine? my memory sucks. But we spent quite a bit of time at your house growing up. This is Melanie by the way.. Out of all of our cousins, there are only three girls. Me, Stephanie and your sister Tiffany. The last time we saw you guys was when you visited us in Wilmore. That might have been 1990.

Hello- I am also a descendant of Nathan/Nathaniel Couch and looking for his birthplace in Virginia. Did you ever get any information about his parents? One posting said his father was Joseph and related him back to Simeon Couch in New England, but no proofs were offered. Nathan served in the American Revolution and is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. I have been in touch with the church in Bethel Park, PA and received pictures of his farm and fort - Fort Couch Road is named for him. Your help would be appreciated.
Linda Bhame

Hey Falconpoint...Let's swap some stuff :) My email is vleigh14@yahoo.com. Stuck in Atlanta right now. Did ya know that our Scott line is from the "Stone Masons" DNA group? Have you found out who Lemuel's father was? Some say it was Robert? I'm stuck on that one for sure. Also, there was a grave right behind Mary that I saw...It was a flat stone and the engraving was worn off...It that Lemuel? I go from Lemuel to W W Scott to Henry Gaines Scott to Grover Cleveland Scott to John Edward Scott (dad). Were the Cleveland's tied in there somewhere cause I can't figure out how old Grover got his middle name and there was a Cleveland site right next to Mary?

Nice to hear from you, too. It's hard to prove a negative, but I'll give you what I have. I have spent many years researching the Scotts, because my father's maternal great grandfather was Chesley Scott and his paternal great grandmother was Elizabeth Caroline (or Caroline Elizabeth) Scott Vickery.

You will already have found Lemuel and Mary in census records, but let me recap. In 1850, they were living together with their children in Franklin Co. By 1860, they were living apart. Mary, in 1860, lived with minor sons Benjamin and Joseph, next door to Chesley and Eliza Walters Scott. By 1870, Mary Scott was living with her daughter Eliza Mosely and granddaughter, Mary Mosely. In the 1880 census, citizens were asked their marital status, and Mary Scott described herself as "divorced". She died a year later. I cannot prove that she did not marry during that year, but she was advanced in age and, upon her death, was still known in the community as Mary Scott.

Mary McDaniel Scott died July 24, 1881. Her obituary in the Hartwell Sun of July 30, 1881, describes her as Mrs. Mary Scott, age 76. Her will, dated Feb. 3, 1873, was proven Aug. 1, 1881, Hart Co. Will Book A, pages 189-192. It describes her as Mary A. Scott and lists her daughter: E. A. Mosely. Son: Joseph H. Scott. Witnesses: J. H. Skelton, F. C. Stephenson, E. Chapman. Codicil dated April 5, 1878, witnessed by J. O. Bobo, J. M. (or "W") Scott and C. W. Seidell, refers to "my daughter Eliza A. Mosely and my grandchildren, Maud Thornton Scott and Laura Looney Scott.

Virtually, all of my ancestors lived in and around Franklin and Hart counties in the 19th century. Family names include Scott, Crump, Vickery, Walters, McCurley, Baker, Carnes, McMullan, Pinson, Martin, Moulder, Stribling, Looney, and many more. So, I've spent a lot of time poring through census, probate, military, cemetery, and marriage records of northeast Georgia, as well as such contemporary histories as James W. Baker's "History of Hart County". I don't have many sources for the area around Anderson, SC in the first half of the 19th century, other than census and military records. Found Lemuel, his wife (presumably Mary), and children in the 1830 Anderson census, so it seems possible that Mary's parents lived in that part of SC, too.

I was told many years ago by another Scott researcher that Lemuel had a brother named Lawson, but I have never seen any evidence that was true. I have also had no success in identifying Mary Ann McDaniel's ancestors in SC. Would be interested in any information on them that you may have or any new areas of research that seem worth pursuing.
No. Mary McDaniel Scott did not re-marry after she divorced Lemuel. Lemuel, however, did marry a second time to Jane. All are buried in Northview Cemetery, Hartwell, Hart Co., GA. I descend from Lemuel and Mary's son, Chester Leverette Scott (usually called Chesley).

Jessica:

I descend from Henry Andrew Couch's brother, William M. Couch.

A mutual cousin of yours and mine, Jerry Lynn Benedict, descends from Henry Andrew Couch and Ida Holder. Jerry has been doing Couch Genealogy research for many, many years, and he is, in my opinion, the best Couch researcher of all of us. Last year, Jerry and I completed a book on the Couch Family. The book is about 400 pages long, with many pictures, and is indexed.

Were you aware that, for many years, there has been an annual Couch Reunion near where the Couch Farm and historic cemetery is located in Cherokee County, Texas, near Jacksonville & New Summerfield, Texas, in August. John W. Cowan is buried in this cemetery, and his original headstone is still in excellent condition.

For some time now, we have been collecting old Couch photos. We have many, but we are still collecting, as we present them at the Couch Reunion every year. The Reunion is the Drury and Mary Howell Couch Reunion. Drury and Mary were Henry Andrew's parents.

We are most interested in any information you have on Mary Elizabeth Couch and John W. Cowan (pictures, stories, etc.)

As you probably know, Henry Andrew Couch and Ida Holder had only two children: (1) Mary Elizabeth (Mollie or Molly) Couch and (2) Thomas William Couch. Ida Holder died after the birth of Thomas William Couch, and Henry Andrew Couch married his second spouse, Fanny Geneva Hardgrave.

Some additional information on the two children of Henry Andrew Couch and his 1st wife, Ida Holder, follows.

Henry Andrew Couch and Ida Holder Couch had the following children:

(1) Mary Elizabeth (Mollie or Molly) Couch, born: 3 March 1868; died: 26 July 1941. Mollie Couch married John W. Cowan on 24 December 1885. J. W. Cowan was born on 13 May 1856 in Tennessee and died on 7 May 1899 in Cherokee County, Texas. The Cowans and the Couches live near each other in Cherokee County, Texas. J. W. Cowan is buried at the Texas Historic Couch Family Cemetery on the old Couch home place near New Summerfield, Texas. After J. W. Cowan’s death, Mollie married Mr. Hawes. Mr. Hawes died and Molly married a Mr. Holcomb. Molly is buried in the old McDonald Cemetery in New Summerfield, Texas.

(2) Thomas William Couch, born on: 27 January 1871 in Griffin, Cherokee County, Texas; died on: 25 February 1907 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Thomas William Couch married his first wife, Ella Riggle, (b: 1874 in Hamilton County, Texas; d: 17 Feb 1897 in Hamilton County, TX) on 24 July 1892 in Hamilton County, Texas. Ella Riggle died on 21 Mar 1897, after the birth of their son, William Floyd Couch. Thomas William Couch married his second wife, May Pruitt, in Van Zandt County, Texas.

If you would like to attend the Couch Reunion, please let me know, and I will give you the date and instructions on how to get there. My email address is: couchgen39@att.net.

We would love to have pictures, additional information, etc. on Mary Elizabeth Couch and J. W. Cowan. Perhaps you can email me photos, information, etc. rather than posting it. I would be interested in a picture of Mary Elizabeth Couch and J. W. Cowan. Email address: couchgen39@att.net

Thanks,
David Couch

Hi :) My name is Christie.

My family wants to know our history for medical and ancestory reasons.

My fathers dad was adopted but we never found out the full story.
Rumors circulated and stories were told but the trutch has never been discovered.

My grandpas name was Donald Oliver Couch.
He was born in San Diego, CA in 1929 BUT both of his adoptive parents were born in Oklahoma.
His birth certificate (I have not order a copy yet) states his mothers last name was Oliver.
This was his adoptive mothers last name but as far as I can tell, they always list the BIRTH MOM, not the adoptive mom.
His adoptive mothers name was Verda (Oliver) Couch and his adoptive birth fathers name was AAron A Couch or known to everyone as "Bud".
There was a man named Claude Brents who Lived with my grandpa and his adoptive parents just after my grandpa was born- rumors say he *might* have been the father.
He was the adoptive fathers nephew.

I am hoping someone out there might have the missing piece to this puzzle.
Who were Donald Olivers birth parents?

It was 1929, great depression, I suspect whoever had him could not afford or support a baby.
But we suspect that person was in his life all along posing as a relative (or relatives) throughout his life!

My name is Stephanie Holman. I was very young when your father died, but he is my uncle. This would make us cousins.I barely remember attending his funeral, but I do remember it.My Mother's name is Carolyn Couch-Shook.She is your aunt, your father's younger sister (one of them)Leonard Couch is our Gradfather, and he died while my mother was still a child and all of the children (8) were taken into foster care following his death. Most of the children were fostered out, adopted, or on their own. We have an aunt LaVerne who lives in Kentucky that I am in contact with. Junior is our uncle as well and does live in Scottsburg. He had a heartattack last weekend, but is recovering well and will be able to go home tomorrow,Nancy lives in Texas, but I barely know her. Ben is an older brother who I met on a few occasions, and George is another brother who is developmentally disabled and lives in Scottsburg. Their mother did in fact live in Kentucky, and about 4 years ago passed away. I met her one time that I can recall and that was at your father's funeral. Her name was Mary. I live in Greensburg, Indiana, and may be able to help you as well as help myself discover this gap in our family. I hope to hear from you soon.
Stephanie Holman 812-593-5653

They are buried in downtown Hart GA, right next to the Jail house. Vickery Rd and a hardware store are right near it. She is in the very front to the left of the entrace to the cemetary. There is a flat large stone grave right behind her and the writing has worn off. I beleive that may be Lemuel but not sure yet. There is a large stone for "Cleveland" in front to the left also. My grandfather was Grover Cleveland Scott. Jane, Lemuels second wife is in the same cemetary as well as the Bobo family and other Scott members. Lemuel was on the first grandjury in hart county.

Thanks Kelly I am in the process of updating Robert Vernon Mathes hystory as He was my mothers dad. The birth dates and dates of William David Mathes is dates taken out of Gertude Bell Mathes Nails Bible, and I have a photo copy of the page in my Family tree Book of the SChoonmakers and Mathes that was made in 1996.
I would like information on your family if possible as to who your parents are etc and where they fit in the family.
