visit to Goodfield Baptist Cemetery, Decatur, Meigs Co Tennessee, USA, Oct. 20, 2009, meeting Virginia Knight Nelson and Gordon Nelson there.
Virginia published the booklet
"Families Named ELDER in East Tennessee, 1986"
with some of the same gravestones pictured
in the Goodfield Cemetery (page 102).
DNA of their current ELDER cousins
matches my brother's "FRANKLIN CO PA" group.

"The United Baptist Church was organized on this spot in September of
1827. The deed for the church and cemetery was made by Canfield
Tillery on November 27, 1848. This cemetery is sometimes referred to
as the Upper Goodfield. In 1860 the church was moved to Decatur.
Robert S. Elder, son of Samuel Elder, was one of the first members of
the church. The cement cover on his grave has the following
inscription "Born on Dumplin Creek, Jefferson County, Tennessee,
1772. A pioneer." He married Sarah Moore on February 16, 1802 in
Jefferson Co., Tennessee."

Relationship question

I'm looking for my mother's dearest childhood friend, Beatrice Elder. Mother can't remember much of this time period, circa 1923 Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia. We have a picture of my mother (Dorothy Allen), Beatrice and mom's sister (Elizabeth Allen) riding in a cart being pulled by a huge goat (with horns!). The cart is labeled Atlanta, Ga. 1923. Mother can't remember where it was taken... Mom will be 91 in November this yr 2009, and I'd like to see if Miss Beatrice Elder has any relatives living that might like a copy of the photo...

I think we have already been in touch through the Elder Family website and on the RootsWeb list. I have already been in contact with connections of the Thomas Elder you are referring to.

My Gt-Gt-Grandfather David Elder (son of the David Elder referred to in my post) died in the home of the Carmichaels in Raploch, Stirling. Thomad Elder is listed in a census record as resident at the address living with his daughter, Martha (Elder) Carmichael. However, neither of our families have been able to trace the connection as yet.

That's interesting about the possibility of the last name being Elter in Germany. My husband's family name got changed from Heijtink to Heytink when they came through Ellis Island.

But these people are not my Elders - the dates are all wrong. My George and Caroline had to have come here prior to 1860, because my great grandfather, Anthony was born in New York, NY - most likely Brooklyn. Also on more than one census record, they are listed as coming from Bayern, which I understand is Bavaria in southern Germany, bu Munich.

But I will keep Elter in mind, when I'm doing my searches. That is a strong possiblity - thanks!

I found a reference online to "a palm-branch" which may have been used to describe the "Tennessee ELDER Crest"
as well as the Crest on Benjamin John Elder's Elephant Antique (Side 2).

who joined the military from ISLE OF SKYE.
He was actually born near Inverness.

Thanks Nancy, I saw that Brady connection on another tree, but haven't had the chance to explore it. I didn't realize that Caroline had also moved to Staten Island along with some of my other Elders.

My grandfather Charles Anthony and my grandmother Catherine McGowan Elder moved to Staten Island in the 20's - my grandfather having lived there before in 1910.

The thing I found really fascinating is that in the 1910 census record, the people who lived next door to them are my McGowans from my grandmother's family. I'm assuming that the families formed a friendship and that's how my grandparents ended up with each other!

I have to track down and see what happened to George, the younger and Conrad. The family did keep in touch with Johanna/Hannah and Anthony and Bertha lived with my grandparents at 5859 Amboy Rd - I have been in that house - so cool!

Thanks Nancy, I'm pretty sure these are my Elders. Anthony Elder was my great grandfather. The really odd thing is that, in the 1870 census, what looks like the same family has a son, John, not Anthony. I suppose it could be a middle name, since I don't have it, but John and Anthony seem to be the same age, John does not appear anywhere else that I can find.

I can't seem to get any further back than George and Caroline. I don't know when they came her from Germany, whether they were married before coming here or what Caroline's maiden name was. George might have been Jurgen in Germany.

Another mystery is my grandfather's (Charles Anthony Elder) mother. According to my mother (his daughter), Bertha was my grandfather's step-mother. She had a son George, who was my grandfather's half-brother.

Anthony's first wife, again, according to my mother, was Amanda Bergwitz, but I can't find a trace of her anywhere. I don't even know if she and my grandfather were married.

One one census, 1900, has Anthony and Bertha married when my grandfather was born, but I guess they could have lied. I need to get some more specifics about my grandfather's birth.

book lists Elijah Elder b. 1811 TN on page 27,
but that whole section of the book,
from page 6-30, beginning with
Samuel ELDER, d. 1811 TN, really belongs with
the "FRANKLIN CO PA" DNA group, not related to
the "PETER ELDER of VA" DNA group.

I know this is a very old post but I am researching some of the same Elder's. Some of my info is a little different.

My Gr Grandmother was Jane Walker b 23 Jan 1882 in Macon MO. d. 30 Jul 1937 in Billings MT. Her parents were Melissa A Elder b 1851 in Macon MO and Charles G Walker b 1850.

Melissa's parents were Elijah Elder b. 20 Jul 1811 TN d. 1886 Macon MO and Jane Craig b 1809 d. 1871. Elijah did have a second wife, Mary Jane Surber Walker the wd mother of his son in law Charles Walker.

According to the History of Macon Co. MO his parents were Jacob Elder and Nancy Collier of Kentucky.
I am not sure but I think Jacob's parents were Samuel B Elder and Hannah.
From the reply to this post I was wondering if Diane Weaver was available to help?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

WILTON, Iowa -- Ruth A. Elder, 80, of Wilton died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus in Davenport.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Wilton. The Rev. Bruce Giese will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist, Sharon Bowers and vocalist, Henry Bentley. Pallbearers are her grandchildren, Brady Gruemmer, Paige Gruemmer, Brooks Gruemmer, Dustin Elder, Barry Boorn, Lesley FitzSimons, Nathan Elder, Kristy Boorn, Tara Elder, Deanna Boorn, Audrey Dinnen, Elizabeth Dinnen, and Patrick Dinnen. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren, Nolan Gruemmer, Taylor Boorn, Lane Gruemmer, Reagan FitzSimons, and Reece Gruemmer. Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton.

Visitations are 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bentley Funeral Homes in Wilton and on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.

Ruth Derby was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Wapello, the daughter of Paul and Edna Cross Derby. She married Waldo M. Elder on June 8, 1940, in Anita. He preceded her in death May 3, 1997.

She was the CEO of the Elder Casey General Store Franchises. In earlier years she was a teachers assistant in Wilton for 12 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilton, a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, and of the Casey's Franchise Group.

She was a loyal republican and enjoyed her work and the many friends she made through Caseys.

Survivors include three daughters, Christa Elder of Indianapolis, Ind., Judy Boorn and her husband, William, of Perry, Barbara Dinnen and her husband, Stephen, of Des Moines; a son, Jack Elder and his wife, Rebecca, of LaCrescent, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Elliott of Wapello, Mary Collins of Atalissa, and Jane Forte and her husband, Richard, of West Liberty; and a brother, Woodrow Derby of San Deigo, Calif.

DURANT, Iowa - Emma Grace Elder, infant daughter of Mark and Melissa Elder, was born Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in Iowa City and died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene, Iowa City. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Nichols Cemetery, Nichols.
Visitations are 2-8 p.m. Monday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, and from 9:30 am until service time Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Church of the Nazarene in Iowa City.

Miss Elder was born May 21, 1948, in Iowa City, the daughter of Pershing and Evelyn McCaffrey Elder.

She graduated from Iowa City High School and received her degree in nursing from Kirkwood Community College.

She worked for 18 years, first as a nurse's aide and then as a registered nurse at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City, before moving to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, where she has been for the past 18 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Jan Hardwick and husband Thom and Ann McCaffrey Elder, all of Minneapolis; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandparents.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Walter F. Elder Jr., 79, of Muscatine, died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Reverend Jaye Johnson will officiate with Pastor Ena Antunez assisting. There will be a time of food and fellowship at the Spangler Chapel following the memorial service. Burial will be in Nichols Cemetery, Monday, August 1, 2005, at 2 p.m. A military service by the combined squad of the American Legion and the VFW will be provided. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter was born March 12, 1926, in Nichols, Iowa, the son of Walter F. and Vera M. Menzer Elder. He married Vera A. Knoll July 6, 1952, in Nichols.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Army from 1950-1952.

He retired from Bandag in 1983, after 24 years working as a super utilities consultant. He also delivered food for Senior Resources.

He was a member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church ' Spangler Chapel, DAV in Davenport, Muscatine American Legion, and Moose Lodge #388.

He camped for over 40 years and was a Cub fan. He loved to dance and tease his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Vera of Muscatine; three sons Joe Walter Elder of Muscatine, Jeffrey Roy Elder and wife Diane of Muscatine, and Leland John Elder and wife Lisa of Muscatine; two daughters Fae Arlene Elder of Muscatine, and Tina Louise Elder of Muscatine; four grandchildren Sarena, Chad, Heidi, and Rachel Elder; two great grandchildren Brady and Braiden Elder; and one brother Willard Elder and wife Joan of Reno, Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

NICHOLS, Iowa - Wanda M. Elder, 91, died Wednesday July 15, 2009, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Nichols. Burial will be at the Nichols Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Nichols United Methodist Church.

Wanda was born on December 5, 1917, in Mondamin, the daughter of William Ray and Retta Hagerman Morford. She married Robert Elder on July 5, 1935, in Columbus Junction.

She was a member of the class of 1935 of West Liberty High School.

The couple farmed in the Nichols area all their lives. She later worked at the University of Iowa in the Memorial Union and later in the office of the dietary department until her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a 4-H leader, member of the Royal Neighbors of America and served as a Hospice volunteer.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, and playing Bingo at the Simpson Home. Her family, family reunions and church were very important.

Survivors include three children, Jerry Elder and wife, Sharon, of Iowa City, Linda Pierson and husband, Tom, of Eldora, and Mark Elder and wife, Marsha, of Nichols; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Mordica of Apache Junction, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers

I've just found your post during a random google search. John Robertson Letham was a relative of mine (can give you more details when I reach home if you are interested). Canderwater Farm was in our family until the 1990s - my mother was a Letham.

I am researching the family of Sylvester Bell Elder (1847 - 1921) and Rebecca Freed (1848 - 1909). The emigrated from Ohio to Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon just prior to 1900. They had ten children together.

One of the children was Eli Orville Elder born 18 June 1868 in Van Buren, Ohio and died 08 November 1947 in Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon. He married Mary Arabell Nicely on 07 April 1895. They had seven children together.

I am trying to locate Eli Orville Elder's burial location. So far I have had no luck and he is apparently not buried in the town's only cemetary.

I am also descended from Sarah Elder. She married George Willis in 1826. Yesterday I found a copy of their marriage license on WVculture.org and I am somewhat confused. I like you believed that John Elder and Margaret McHenry was her mother and father. But it states on the license that William M. Elder is listed as her father. Do you know of any of this information?
