I'm researching my husband's Ernst ancestors for my kids. Unfortunately, unlike the rest of the family tree, the Ernsts were not big on genealogy, so I can't trace them very far back, or very accurately. Since Ernst is my childrens' last name, any information you might have to lengthen the story would be GREATLY appreciated!

Peter Ernst (of Prussian or Ukranian descent -- no date of birth or death known) married Sofia Lagge (French -- no date of birth or death known). They lived somewhere around Pierre, South Dakota, and later moved to Lodi, California. (Incidentally, it's believed Peter's parents came from North Dakota.)

Peter and Sofia had: Amil (Ernie), Ruben, Clara, Martha and Arthur.

Arthur Ernst (b. 4/10/21, d. 1998) married Ruth Memory. They had two children: Gerald and Judy.

Gerald Ernst (b. 3/25/43) married Adrienne Rickey. They had two sons: Brian and Mark.

Brian Ernst (b. 3/25/68) is my husband. He is no longer "stuck in Lodi," but we do visit frequently. ; )

I know what you mean about the Ernst's not being big on genealogy--mine weren't either.
Have you tried looking for them in the census? I found quite a bit of information for my Ernst's and then was able to order death certificates (which had alot more info) after tracing their movements by the census.

Jill - Don't know if you'll read this or not since your post was
from 2002, and now it's 2004! Anyway, your father-in-law
Gerald Ernst is my cousin. His father was my mother's
brother. My mother was Martha Ernst Hieb, daughter of
Peter Ernst and Sophia Lagge. I don't believe Sophia was
French; it was my understanding she was German. her family could have been from the Alsace region which was on the French-German border. I do have some S Dak census
data on Peter and Sophia.

So you're one of the Hiebs? I've heard about my husband's Hieb cousins. In the two years since I did the post, I've actually obtained quite a bit on the Ernst family -- you're right, they're German. (German by way of Russia). Send me an email and I can send you the stuff.

Jill - We had emailed back in 2004 about the Ernst family. My mother was Martha Ernst - Gerald Ernst is my cousin. You had said you had information on the Ernsts; I said I'd love to have it. But I never heard from you. Anyway, this is a long shot. Hope to hear back from you.
