Good luck

How lovely. As it turns out, my gr gfather, Andrew Ferguson, spent about 10 years in St Martins, St John Co, New Brunswick before moving back to the Boston area where he had originally settled. In the 1881 Canadian census there is an Alexander Ferguson, a house painter, living with Andrew and his family. Coincidentally, Andrew left Canada in 1888 and I can not find a trace of Alexander after that.
My belief is that Andrew's parents are also Alexander Ferguson and Jean Currie (I have Alex's and Jean's given names from a marriage cert but have had to find the "Currie"). One other piece of information I have about Alex is that he listed his religion as Weslyan Methodist while Andrew and his family were Church of England.
Does any of this match up with what you know of Alexander and his family. If you know the ultimate fate of Alexander's brother Andrew that would be helpful, too.

Hope we're cousins (by marriage at any rate)

I felt a little extravagant today and I bought some time on the GROS site. There I found both Alexander Fergusons' death registrations Alex sr in 1892 and Alex jr in 1919. I also found Alexander and Agnes in the 1901 census. The interesting bit is that Alexander's occupation on the death registration is listed as "Painter (Journeyman)" This would fit the Alexander I am looking for quite nicely.

I fyou would like the image for these documents sent to you let me know.

Scott

Scott, what is the GROS site that you mentioned in your posting? Since you had such good success, maybe I would be able to find some ancestors also that I haven't been able to find.

Thanks in advance for your help.

GROS is the General Register Office of Scotland which has a site at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. For 6 pounds (less than $10 US) you get 30 credits for 24 hours. It costs one credit to return a page of search results from the Old Parish Records/Death-Birth-Marriage registers/Census etc and 5 credits to get an image if available. If you know who you are looking for this can be great!

Thank you for the information. I'll check out the site and probably pay to get some information as I have dates of marriages, etc., but have not been able to validate them. One place I find the birth place as being England and another Scotland--very confusing.

Again thanks--

My father ordered a transcription of a marriage certificate from 1873 in Suffolk County MA that listed a Scottish house painter named Andrew Ferguson (son of Alexander Ferguson and Jane) marrying a Mary McNarney. I thought this was my man - the parents, age and occupation all match. However, the death certificate for the both Alexander and Mary who were my great grandparents list Mary's maiden name as Mcintire.

Perhaps there was an error in transcribing one of these documents. I don't know. Can you share any of the information you have?
