My family is from the Roanoke Bedford area of Virgina. I still have relatives there and I'm currently looking for other family members. Maybe we can help each other. Thanks.

Laura: I have been trying to track down an ancestor of mine who lived in the Campbell County area of VA in the early 1800s. Her name was Susannah Garrett and she married a gentlemen by the name of Moore Barricks in 1807. If you can find a link, please let me know.

I'm looking for any and all descendants of Richard H. Garrett, at whose Caroline Co. (VA) farm John Wilkes Booth died. One of his daughters, I understand, moved to California and married, but I haven't a clue what her married name was.

Richard Garrett

I can't believe I have found someone looking for the same connection that I am!!!! My research is on my husband Daniel Walsh's connections to the Garretts. I have so much info, get back to me on my e-mail, and I will send you my info that I have stored in WordPerfect. Jane married William Shortridge 05 July 1827, Wayne County, Indiana and had 10 children. Richard Garrett would be my husband's Great, Great, Great grandfather.

Oops! Seems we're talking about two different Richard Garretts. My RHG was born and raised in Virginia. John Wilkes Booth was killed on his farm in Caroline County.
My big question mark is the whereabouts of his daughter, who moved to California

Richard H. Garrett

Never having used this message board before, if you replied to my info with a Oops! We are talking about the same Richard H. Garrett where John Wilkes Booth died. Doherty, army; Conger and Luther Baker of the Secret Service surrounded the barn where Davie Herold and Booth were hiding. Herold came out with his hands up. The men set fire to Garrett's barn, one of Doherty's men set too aim through a chink in the barn wall, sending a bullet through Booth's neck. Doherty, Conger, and Baker pulled the fatally wonded man free. "Tell mother I die for my country," Booth whispered in Conger's ear. Then they carried him up to the porch of Garrett's house, still alive but paralyzed, his hands "useless" now, he said "useless.' They gave him water to drink turned himn on his side three times, emptied out the contents of his pockets, and listend to him beg to be killed mercifully. Two and a half hours after Corbett's shot was fired, not much ealier inthe day than Lincoln himself died,Booth the unhappy actor made his final exit. Elisha Seburn Shortridge was the grandson of Richard Garrett in whose Virginia barn Booth had supposedly died. I am sorry my communication was NOT clear. Now to answer your question. In Jane Garrett Shortridge's bible dated 1862 October 19, she wrote that Jane daughter of David Elizbeth Garrett born Dec 17, 1805 (Jane) Married William son of John Margaret Shortridge born May 11, 1800 (William). Their children were Elizabeth, Margret, Rebecca, Merian, Sarah, Amanda, Elendor, George R., Elisha Seburn, and Martha Jane. To me it looks like David was a son of Richard H. Garrett. Let me know if this is the line of your search, perhaps you can provide me with info as to Richard's siblings and parents as well as his other children and their children.
