I am answering the post that Patricia wrote about James Madison Garrett. Firstly, I want to say that you certainly have great information about his life. James Madison Garrett is a direct descendant of my husband. He was born 11 August 1851 in Carroll, Georgia and death is 31 May 1900 in Carroll, Georgia. He is the gr-gr-grandfather to my husband. Our line follows James to his son, Barney Lee Garrett, Sr. I have an obituary for Barney Lee Garrett, Sr. where it says that his parents were James Madison Garrett and Amelia Jones Garrett. I would be interested in any other family lore that you may have. Also, any info about Chaney Alfred Garrett and Elisha Garrett. Thank you!

Hi, In the book Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Co. VA 1655-1900 There is listed a Deed of 1733 which mentions Elizabeth wife of Anthony Garnett who had been the wife of John Boulware. Since some hand writing is not clear I looked at the Garnett and there were several James Garnetts but none that married a Boulware(or a widow of one.) It certainly is confusing, isn't it.

Re: Descendants of William GARRETT, Sr

In addition to the various Garrett/Johnson marriages that you mentioned in your original post, a Clevars/Cluverius Duke of Louisa Co., VA married a Lucy Smith (about 1770) and then an Elizabeth Barbour JOHNSON (about 1778). Also, a Richard Johnson (do you know if he was a descendant of one of the earlier male Johnsons who had married into the Garrett family?) married an Ann Smith in the home of the above Mr. Duke....probably around 1772 or so. I SUSPECT that this Richard Johnson and Elizabeth Barbour Johnson were at least related to the Johnsons who married into the Garrett family in some way...and I also SUSPECT that the Lucy Smith who married Mr. Duke was related to the Ann Smith who married Richard Johnson.

In 1773, the above Richard Johnson (again....was he perhaps a Johnson/Garrett descendant?) and his wife Ann Smith had a daughter named Elizabeth "Betsy" Johnson, and that daughter was baptized in Caroline Co., VA (versus Louisa County) in 1774. Surety was provided by a Mrs. John Thilman and her daughter Fanny Thilman of Carloine Co., VA, and research now indicates that Mrs. John Thilman was born Miss Anna Daniel (born early-1740s), and that she was a daughter of Garrett Daniel and Clara Smith of Middlesex Co., VA.

Note: While I have Clara Smith's lineage back to the Alexander Smith who lived in Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA by at least 1650s, I do not know how/if Ann Smith....nor the above Lucy Smith....were related to Clara Smith. In addition, while there are some very skilled and dedicated researchers of the referenced Daniel family, none of them has been able to determine a "specific reason" why Garrett Daniel had his given name of "Garrett."

Note: John Thilman's step-mother was a Vivion, and the Smith and the Vivion families in Middlesex Co., VA had intermarried earlier. So....there appears to have been a couple of "connections" between the Thilman and Smith families.

I note that one of the daughters of William Garrett, Sr. and Miss Ashton married a Mr. Terrell/Terrill, and it appears that he was also associated with Caroline Co., VA (per some records that I have seen). Did Mr. Terrell and his Garrett wife also live in Caroline Co., VA? Was there a "connection" of some sort between the Garretts in Louisa Co., VA and the Garretts in the Essex, Middlesex and/or Caroline Co., VA areas?

There was Henry Garrett who purchased land in Middlesex Co., VA from a nephew (John Smith) of the above Mrs. Clara (Smith) Daniel in 1799 (I do not know where this Henry Garrett was living prior to 1798/1799...but there had been no Garretts at all listed on the 1783 Middlesex Co., VA tax list). In 1798/1799, that Henry Garrett was a witness when the widow Mrs. Winifred "Winnie" Bennett married her second husband in Middlesex Co., VA. Mrs. Winnie Bennett had a son who was named SMITH Bennett, and I am trying to determine Winnie's "exact connection" to the Smith family. Winnie had a daughter who was named Mary Bennett, and it strongly appears that Mary Bennett and her husband John Brown took-in an orphaned son of the above John Smith (again, John Smith was a nephew of Clara Smith) around 1818-1819. This orphaned son was then named Smith W. Brown (though DNA testing on one of his living male "Brown" descendant proves that he was a "blood Smith" who was out of the family of the above-referenced Alexander Smith, Clara Smith, John Smith, etc.), and he was my maternal gg-grandfather.

My gg-grandfather Smith W. "Brown" married Susan Hill Garrett, a daughter of Richard Garrett and Nancy Taff, in 1841 in Middlesex Co., VA, so I am a Garrett descendant (though I don't know if my overall Garrett family was part of your overall Garrett family). It APPEARS that the above Richard Garrett had come into Middlesex Co., VA from King and Queen Co., VA by 1812.

Note: There was what appears to me to have been a DIFFERENT man who was named Richard JohnSton/Johnson, and he married Dorothy Waller. Some records show that this man married second the above Ann Smith...but I now SUSPECT that two different (and possibly unrelated) Richard JohnStons/Johnsons have been incorrectly "intermixed."

Anyway, if you have any evidence that the Richard Johnson who married Ann Smith in the Louisa Co., VA home of Mr. Duke (probably around 1772 or so)....and who then lived in Caroline Co., VA....was a son of one of the male Johnson/female Garrett couples, please let me know. Thanks.

Edith Carla Garrett gave birth to Christopher Robin Beck on June 3, 1978. I know because Christopher is my husband and we have a copy of the original birth certificate. But he was given up and never knew his either of his birth parents. The only information I have on his mother is in the birth certificate. She was 28 years old at his birth and lived in New Smyrna FL. Does anyone out there have any information they can share that might help me?

Nancy Ellen Green Garrett Adams, related to Britta Ann Green McGuire Flynn

My brick wall is my great-great-great grandmother Britta Ann Green McGuire Flynn. I have been researching people who seem related to her in hopes of identifying her parents.

One such person is Nancy Ellen Green, who married Sanford V. Garrett.

Fact #1:

Ellen Green married SVG on Feb. 24, 1856, in Shelby County, AL.

Fact #2.

In the 1860 US Census for AL, Nancy E. Green is living in Montevallo, Shelby County, AL. She is 27, born GA, keeping house, living with husband S. V. Garrett, a mechanic, and sons James B., 3, and Thomas G., 9/12. Neighbors are Wood, Leach, Knuboue, Rogers, Boothe and Allen.

(Britta Ann and her sister (?) Mary Ann Green McKinney lived in Shelby County, probably Montevallo, in 1850)

Fact #3.

In the 1866 US State Census for AL, Mrs. Ellen Garrett is living in Township 24, Range 12 East in Shelby County. In the household are one male under 10, one female under 10, and one female over 20. She lives a few doors over from Mrs. Brittan McGuire.

After 1866 Nancy Ellen seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Nowhere I looked could I find her until I looked for her children. I found James Garrott living in the household of James Adams in 1870.

Fact #4.

In the 1870 US Census for AL, James Adams is living on Beat 1, Montevallo P.O., Shelby County, AL. He is 45, born TN, a farmer, $4000, $4000. Also in the household are Nancy E. (Green Garrett), 38, keeping house, born GA; James R. (Robert Lee) Adams, 5/12. born Dec. in AL; James Garrott, 13, attending school, born AL; Mary E. Garrott, 10, at home; Willie Purviance, 12, born AL, attended school; all the above people are white. There follow some black people: Henry King, 25, cook, AL; Ben Nelson, 80, VA, austler ??; more whites: Joseph F. Blase (?), coal mine superintendent, 33, $1000, $8000, IL; Babe Smitherman, 27, born AL, at home; Sarah E., 1, born AL; Samuel Byington, farmer, New Jersey ??, 35; Albert Whitfield, 38, Mining Engineer, PA, parents of foreign birth; Thomas Black, at home, $500, $200, IL.

Neighbors include Moses Johnson; Andrew Gentry, Jolly, James Acker, Wilson, Cooper, Nelson, Seal, Woodley, Nelson, Reves (Zoss?), Nabors, Prentice, Arnold, Shortridge, Brasher, Davis.

Please note:

Sanford V. Garrett died in 1862 in Henrico, VA. The 1866 Census conforms to her probable family size, two children and one parent. Son James would be about 6 and Mary E. would be about 3. Thomas has apparently died, as I can find no other evidence of him. Neighbors are McMath, Wells, Holsemback, Allen, Nabors, Mary Large, Goshatt (Cashatt), Woods, T. E. Merony, and significantly, James Adams. Some researchers list S. V. and Nancy Ellen as having a son Josh, but I have never seen any documentary evidence to support this, though it may be true.

Fact #5

In the 1880 US Census for AL, Nancy Adams is living on Beat 4, Village of Montevallo. She is widowed, at home, born GA, father born SC, mother born GA. Also in the household is son Robert Lee, 10. Neighbors: Large, Rhodes, Nelson, Bradford, Shortridge, Dill, Acker, West, Wilson, Carleton (One of Britta’s neighbors in 1866).

I haven't found Nancy Ellen after this time, but her some James Robert Lee Adams eventually moved to Gadsden, Etowah County, and died there.

Questions still to be answered:

How is Nancy Ellen related to Britta Ann? At first I thought she might be a sister, but Nancy's parents were clearly born in SC and GA, while censuses consistently show Britta's parents born in SC or NC. She is clearly related, as she keeps showing up in the same places that Britta does with many of the same names.

Where is Nancy Ellen Green in 1850? Is this the Ellen Green/Gran who is lving with Elizabeth Reeves in the 1850 Census? She is 19, born AL. Also in household are Thomas Reeves, 15, Elizabeth Reeves, 60, $2800, lives next door to Thomas Ray, overseer.

Or is this Nancy Green the daughter of Elijah Green and living in his household in Shelby County? She is 18, born AL, father and mother from TN. Probably not, but it's hard to tell.

Throughout her life Nancy Ellen Green Garrett Adams is surrounded by names associated with Britta Ann Green McGuire Flynn, so they are definitely family. Just how close I have yet to determine, but hopefully this new research can help someone else out there.

Happy hunting!

Hello Again Eldona. I have all of our Garretts back to 1770, in my data base. There is a lot of the information on the internet genealogy sites that have our Garrett's information all wrong. I do have the correct information. I personally knew every one of Jasper Newton Garrett's children. As a matter of fact his first daugher, Mary Truefina Garrett Black, raised me from the day I was born and all of Jasper Newton's kids were either uncle or aunt to me and I also knew all of their kids. I sent you my e-mail address on the previous response and you can contact me via e-mail and I will give you my phone number. Joe Dale Black.
