Would anyone finding links with George Gemmill born Troon, Scotland around 1810-1820 married to Jane Templeton, please contact with details. Their son Robert Templeton Gemmill emigrated to New Zealand about 1875.

I live in Wellington New Zealand. My grandfather's name was Robert Gemmill and was born near Westport New Zealand circa 1870, I believe, during the Gold Rush. He may have been a son of the older Robert. My grandfather had 1 sister and 2 brothers, Hugh (no issue) and Jim, whose son Les married a Daken(?), a Mormon family from Utah but they settled here. Les has a grandson currently working in Midwest USA.

Postscript from Ian. My Aunt Dorothy (nee Gemmill) once claimed that the spelling from Gemmill to Gemmell (or vice versa) happened as aresult of a family feud! Wayne: are you the good guys or is it us??

Ian,
Many thanks for your response. Your Aunt Dorothy may well be correct about the spelling of the name and the history. I thought perhaps a change was made to anglicise the name around the time of WW1 by his eldest son Stanley (my Grandfather). It came as quite a surprise to me when I found cemetery, death and birth records for Robert. He is buried in the Waikaraka Cemetery in Auckland. The timing may suggest a link to your family. Ours I understand were involved in ship/boat building on the Clyde prior to emigration.
Best regards,
Wayne Gemmell

Wayne,
Sounds like you're an Aucklander. What my family did or where they came from has been a mystery to us for some time. I doubt that my great grandfather would have settled in Auckland but an accidental death while on business or vacation cannot be ruled out. As far as I know my Uncle Robert (another generation!) was the first to leave the West Coast, circa 1935. A university colleague remarked 30 years ago how I resembled the Wanganui Gemmells - very curious. Cheers from Ian.

I previously suggested that my grandfather robert, may have been son of robert, son of george but now know that was not the case. I have just discovered that my g/f was son of hugh, born west kilbride, aryshire circa 1840. Hugh's father was also hugh who married margaret boyd, which suggests that the older hugh was born circa 1810. That as far back as I can cast at this stage. This may fill a gap for someone or someone may hold the other piece of my puzzle?
