YOUTH DROWNED PLAYING GAME ON RIVER BANK (OMAHA NE 1925)

[Mentions Detective Godek at the bottom of this story]
Companion Says Heaving of Bricks, Tied to Body, Pulled Him In.
Drives Back to Tell Brother and Police.
With one end of a rope tied around his body and the other end around three bricks, according to a story told police, Leo Hanley, 21? 24? of 25 & Cass St, was drowned in the Missouri river past the Bellevue ferry about midnight Tuesday.
George Jarman, 20? of 21 & Spencer street, told police he and Hanley had gone to the river bank Tuesday night to seek diversion by throwing bricks, tied with a rope, onto ice floes in an effort to break them up. One end of the rope, Jarman said, was tied around Hanley's body so that the bricks could be hauled back for succeeding trials.
They had been at their "game" for some time, Jarman said, when one heave of the bricks out into the river was made with such force that it pulled Hanley into the water, Jarman declared he threw his companion another rope, but Hanley shouted, "I can swim. I don't need the rope." A few seconds later, according to Jarman's story, Hanley disappeared beneath the swirling waters, evidently caught by an undertow.
Jarman said he them jumped in his car, went to the Hanley home, and with Leo's brother, Joe, 19, went to notify police. The two were sent to South Side station, where Jarman told his story.
Officers Fleming and Zurek and Detectives Hinkley and Godek were sent to the scene with flashlights and grappling hooks in an effort to recover the body.

Morning World-Herald
Wed Dec 2, 1925 front page

Not related

Genealogy

My great-grandmother's name was Lyuga(Louise)
Barbiric-Godec. Godec was her maiden name. She married Milutin Sayatovich. She immigrated from Duga Rijeka,Ludbreg,Croatia arround 1911. I don't know if she had any brothers that would have also immigrated to Ellis Island. I'm having a difficult time finding any information. The information I do have was from a baptismal record of my grandmother who was baptised in 1913. She was baptised in Mingo Junction, OH. Mingo Junction is near the Pittsburgh area. I think they may have settled there before moving towards the Columbus area. If you haven't already tried this you may want to send for her death certificate. This will tell you where she is from. If you know the ship that she may have immigrated on there is an application you can complete. Contact the National Archives
201 Varick St.
New York, NY 10014

I hope I have given you some information. If I find that my great-grandmother had any
brothers I will be sure to let you know!

Sincerely,
Cheryl

I'm looking for the sister of my husband's grandfather. We don't know her first name. Her married name was Godek and her maiden name was Blachowiak. Her father was Matias (Matthew) Blachowiak and her mother was Frances Kapacinska. Most of the Blachowiaks settled in the Milwaukee, WI area. We believe she was alive in 1932.
