Amos Guerin

I have an Amos Guerin born in LaPrairie, Quebec in 1840. I also have a Joseph born about 1842 same place, baptized St Phillipe's in LaPrairie. Joseph's parents are listed as Jacques Guerin and ?Florence DuBois (from ancestry.com's copy of Drouin Collection). I do not read French very well and it is a hazy copy. I think that there is a grandfather listed, Joseph Guerin, perhaps as a godparent.
I have Amos and Joseph in Ogdensburg NY operating a boat yard around 1890's. They had been there for many years.

Amos married Maryann McDonald from Brockville, Ontario, Canada. Not sure if married in US or Canada. Their children all born in US in Ogdensburg are:
1. Sophia 1862
2. Mary 1864
3. Fannie 1865
4. John 1867
5. George 1869
6. Angeline 1870
7. Elizabeth 1872
8. William 1874
9. Harriet 1877
10. Agnes 1880- We have this line.

Maryann died 1893 in Ogdensburg

I think that Joseph was his brother as they were close in age and born in the same place but no proof. Could not find a listing on Ancestry although Joseph's came right up. Could be that they were cousins. Most info taken from 1880 census

Agnes, #10, was my husband's grandmother. She married twice, I have this information, and died in Pompton Lakes, NJ in 1958.

I would love to have Amos' parents information and if Joseph was his brother and if there are any other siblings.

Janet Morgan

Back this far there are few records but County Clare has quite a number and some are online. Google, County Clare library for further resources.

According to the 1880 Bellmont NY census, Katherine is 34 yrs of age and living with Patrick, her husband: age 38. Their are four children listed:
Patrick age 7
James age 5
John age 4
and Katherine age 1
Katherin died in 1901 and was about 52 years of age, according to the Malone NY paper. She was listed as a widow (Patrick died in 1892) and was survived by several children, the youngest being about 15. Katherine was the daughter of Edmund and Ellen English Guerine. She was the second oldest, JoHanna being the oldest (she married L.Safford).The other two sisters were Ellen (married Jeremiah Fontaine-Fountain) and Mary (married Albert Helms)
The parents were born in Ireland but the 4 daughters were born in NY. JoHanna was baptised at St. Patricks Church in Hogansburg, NY on March 16, 1844.

I see from your tree that you say Walter and Elizabeth were married in 1853. I wasn't able to find any record of that - was it in the UK or the USA? Do you know why they went to America?

Elizabeth, their daughter was born in Detroit (according to the 1911 Census) but Maggie just put America. Elizabeth married Edward Colvin in Nov 1876, having had a daughter, Elizabeth Alice, with him in February 1876 (I have the certificates!) Edward died in June 1878 and Elizabeth subsequently married William Billingham, who brought her daughter up as his own and she took his name.

In 1911 Walter and Elizabeth were living as 'old age pensioners' in 2 rooms at 15 Gee Street, (near Old Street in the City of London)with their son Frederick and daughter in law, Mary Ann. They had been married for 58 years, and had had 10 children born alive, of whom 6 were still living.

Walter died on January 21st 1912 at 25 Radnor Street, Holborn with his son Frederick in attendance and Elizabeth on February 4th at 50 Bastwick Street, Holborn. (All these streets are very close together around St Luke's Church in Old Street.) They both died of bronchitis and heart failure. Elizabeth's death was notified by Walter Joseph Emms, who was married to their grand daughter, Elizabeth Alice nee Colvin, late Billingham.

Hope that gives you a bit more information. I'd love to hear anything you may know - particularly about their time in the US. The only thing I discovered by noodling around on the Internet was that in the 1850s Detroit's major industry was timber and Walter was a wood turner. Whether or not there's any connection, we can only speculate.

Which of their children are you descended from? My Great grandmother was Emily Jane, b1864 in Stoke Damerel, Devon.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best, Christine

Hello - I`m sorry, you didn`t leave your name.

How exciting to hear from you anyway. You will have seen that Walter and Elizabeth are also my g g grandparents. You`re right - they had Elizabeth and Maggie in the US. Are you descended from one of them?

They had at least 7 more children from my memory. I`m not at home at the moment but will be back at the end of next week, when I`ll write again.

I do have information about them from most of the censuses, up to 1911 and their deaths within a few days of each other the following year. It would be great if we had complementary information and you could fill in some of my gaps...

I`ll be in touch soon. All the best, Christine

Do you know any dates or time period associated with him?

There are two groups of Guerins that came into America: One was a Protestant/Huguenot group that came from France to England to America in late 1600's: Charleston, SC, then to NJ and NY state.
Also relatives to New Rochelle, NY and Virginia.

Then there are Catholic Guerins that came directly to the US from France at various times and Catholic Guerins that came to Canada and then some came south to the US.

Beyond living in Bridgeport, give us anything else that would let us indentify your Joseph.
I am tracing my family tree along with a cousin who has used this site before - to trace our G G Grandparents. Michael Begley and Catherine Guerin (Michaels brother Maurice married Catherine's sister Ellen). These couples then emigrated to New Zealand on the "City of Auckland" in 1878. The Begley's were we believe from Dingle area - Michael Begley and Bridget Brosnahan were their parents. Any information would be gratefully received. I'm planning a trip there from Australia in May 2009.

I wanted to update some information on the children in the hope it will spark new contacts:

Hormisdas did not take the name Narcisse; there was a 2nd Narcisse born around 1848 (have not found birth record, but found on 1861 Canadian Census...both Narcisse and Hormisdas on record). The 2nd Narcisse was the one who Married Rose de Lima Ste. Marie.

Marie Appoline Guerin m. Alexandre Bonneau 15 Feb 1871 in St-Chysostome, Chateauguay, Quebec. After marriage, they moved to Forest Station, Altona, Clinton, New York. They had 5 children:

1. Deusdedit (Daniel), b. 18 Nov 1871 in Forest.
2. Edouard (Edward), b. 16 Apr 1873 in Forest.
3. Harriet (Hattie), b. abt. 1875 m. Nicolas Rivers 22 Jun 1903 in Escanaba, Mi.

Harriet and Nicolas have at least one child Clarice born abt. 1910 in Michigan.

4. Exilia, b. 10 May 1876 in Forest.
5. Emma, b. abt. 1879

Found in Bark River, Michigan on the 1880 census. Marie's brother Hormisdas is with her. Marie later raises Hormisdas' youngest daughter Viola as her own.

Hormisdas is later known as Henry. He marries Margaret Blake 29 Nov 1884 in Escanaba, Michigan. Margaret dies on 17 Mar 1896, leaving Hormisdas a widower with 6 children:

1. Leah V. Guerin, b. 4 Sep 1886 in Michigan, d. 30 Mar 1971 in Contra Costa, California. She married a Francis (Frank) Luek abt. 1910 in California. They had at least 4 children: Jeanette Margaret, Jeanne, Flora, and Mary Jane.

2. Daniel Joseph Guerin, b. 25 Jun 1888 in Bark River, Michigan. d. 7 Aug 1970 in Santa Barbara County, California. He married a woman with the first name Irene. They had at least one son: Richard, born around Jun 1927.

3. Florence (Flora) Guerin, b. 19 Jul 1890 in Michigan, d. 3 Aug 1971 in Alameda, California. She married Horace White in California. No information on children of that marriage.

4. Stephen Henry Guerin, b. 21 Jun 1892 in Crystal Falls, Michigan, d. 22 Feb 1955 in Siskiyou, California. Stephen married June Marcoot in about 1924 in California. No information about children.

5. Omer Francis Guerin, b. 25 May 1894 in Crystal Falls, Michigan, d. 14 Mar 1986 in Coos Bay, Oregon. Omer married a woman with the first name Mildred. They had at least one son: John W., born abt. 1921.

6. Viola F. Guerin, b. 2 Mar 1896 in Crystal Falls, Michigan, d. 3 Jun 1997 in Niagara, Wisconsin. She married William Dubord 18 Aug 1919 in Escanaba, Michigan. She had at least 4 children: Rodger, Arlene, Robert Vernon, and Delores.

After the mother's death 2 weeks after she was born, Viola was sent to her Aunt Marie's to be cared for. The rest of the children are found in a convent school (separate schools for boys and girls) in Michigan on the 1900 Census.

After Henry settles in California, evidently the children are sent for and they move to California with him, however Viola remained with Marie in Michigan.

William Guerin, born circa 1831, County Cork, Ireland

I posted this inquiry last year with no results, so figured I'd try again. I am looking for any information on William Guerin. I've encountered a number of different spellings/misspellings, including Grain, Gihon, Gearon, and Gueren. His wife's name was Catherine, but the only other information I have is that she was born in Ireland about 1817. I first found them on the 1860 US Census living in Boston MA with my great grandparents Patrick B. and Bridget(Barry)Downing. They moved with my GGPs to San Francisco CA in the early 1860's. Catherine died 8-3-1877, William died 9-30-1886, and they are both buried in the Downing family plot. There were no children listed in the censuses or obituaries. I would love to find out how they are related to my GGPs. Thanks in advance for any help.

Bev Penzien
