I am looking for descendents of John and Mary Phelan(Ryan) from Tipperary. Their son, Thomas migrated to Australia around 1850-1860's and died in 1998 in Australia. I am Thomas's great granddaughter Can anyone help me. I hope to visit ireland in the near future and would like to go to where my ancestors lived.

I don't know if there's any connection, but my mother's uncle, William Whelan/Phelan went to Australia around 1876, He was from Bansha, County Tipperary and his parents were James and Honora (Keating) Whelan/Phelan. I don't know what name William used. My grandfather used Whelan; his other brother, Thomas used Phelan. Thomas visited Australia in 1885 - 1889 and returned to Ireland, then settled in the U.S. - all other family members immigrated to U.S. Noone ever heard from William again. It's been a big mystery. My aunt is 90 and wants me to find out what happened to him. I haven't a clue how to do Australian research - I'm guessing my best approach is to find a death certificate - I do know his date of birth, so that should help.
By the way, my father's mother was a Ryan - they came from a town about 20-30 miles from Bansha - Doon, County Limerick (now it's Tipperary). I know the Ryans and Whelans are found in this area.

Thanks for the reply. My Thomas Phelan came to Australia around 1860's and landed at Rockhampton in Queensland. He owned a hotel in 1870 and married a Katherine McDonald from Armagh. On their marriage certificate he says was 35 years old and came from Tipperary but not exactly where. His mother's name was Mary Ryan and his father name was John Phelan and they were drapers. He died in Rockhampton in 1897. I'm afriad that is all I know about him. I am going to apply for his death certificate shortly and hopefully that will tell me more. Hope we can make a connection. It would be good to find someone related or at least where he came from.
Cheers, Bev Johnston

Does this Bridget Uniack sound like yours? This was taken from LDS church records for Co Galway, Ireland.

When I was in Ireland last summer, I saw Unicak graves in the Kilbeacanty cemetery. As I understand it, Kanespound is in the towland of Rewayer, parish of Kithomas.

Surnames: Ryan
I'm looking for the ancestors of Patrick Ryan of Doon Limerick born abt 1855. He migrated to Australia and joined the Queensland police abt 1876. On the unverified info I have his parents may have been James Ryan and Mary O'Brien(e) of Doon. Word in the family was that his parents were killed when he was young and he was raised by grandparents- those who had heard this story have now passed on!. I have lots of details about his Australian life but would love to be able to go back to the Irish ancestors. Jocelyn
