I don't know if there's any connection, but my mother's uncle, William Whelan/Phelan went to Australia around 1876, He was from Bansha, County Tipperary and his parents were James and Honora (
Keating) Whelan/Phelan. I don't know what name William used. My grandfather used Whelan; his other brother, Thomas used
Phelan. Thomas visited Australia in 1885 - 1889 and returned to Ireland, then settled in the U.S. - all other family members immigrated to U.S. Noone ever heard from William again. It's been a big mystery. My aunt is 90 and wants me to find out what happened to him. I haven't a clue how to do Australian research - I'm guessing my best approach is to find a death certificate - I do know his date of birth, so that should help.
By the way, my father's mother was a Ryan - they came from a town about 20-30 miles from Bansha - Doon, County
Limerick (now it's Tipperary). I know the
Ryans and
Whelans are found in this area.
