Richard D. Harness, ths son of Leonard and Ella (Maron) Harness, was born December 2, 1927, in Newton, Iowa. He passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, Iowa, at the age of 77 years.
As a young man Dick moved to Dolliver in 1944. He graduated from Dolliver Consolidated School in 1946. Later Dick served in the United States Army during World War II.
After his honorable discharge from military service, Dick returned to the area and was employed in Truman, Minnesota, for seven years as a plasterer. He was united in marriage to Norma Randall in 1960 in Trimont, Minnesota. Then he was employed with the United States Postal Service and was a rural mail carrier for Dolliver and a portion of the Armstrong area for thirty years. Dick served as Fire Chief and was on the Dolliver City Council for twenty-five years. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood carving and woodworking. Dick especially enjoyed travelling. He was a member of a hunting club in Webb, Iowa. Dick was a Boy Scout leader in Dolliver for a few years also. Norma died February 9, 1993.
He was a member of the Dolliver Lutheran Church until it closed and then he became a member of the Dolliver United Methodist Church. Dick was a lifetime member of Weiby-Johnson VFW Post 5232 of Armstrong.
Left to cherish Dick's memory are two sisters, Sallie Nelson and Betty Clayton both of Dolliver; one aunt; one uncle; several cousins; and a niece.
Preceding him in death were his wife; parents; step-father; one brother; a nephew; and a brother-in-law.
