Hi Sandi, Fancy meeting a long lost cousin!
I'm new to all this, so not sure what a getcom is, but yes, if you could send one I'm sure I would be able to open/read it. I've got details of all of Henry's children down to the present. From the details in Michael's post, I've been able to tie together a number of Hitchcock's buried in Dedham's St Mary's churchyard, who I couldn't link before. I have a cousin who has done a lot of research into her family trees and you may have been in contact with her. The information I have is based on her research from a number of years ago, but at the time she didn't have details of Henry's three brothers. Apparently, Alfred Hitchcock's family also lived in Dedham at this time. Also, there is a Constable painting in the V&A Museum in London called Cottage in a Cornfield. Henry and his family lived in this cottage in the 1860's, and they called it Noah's Ark. I suspect this was because the roof probably leaked and there were a lot of animals living in the house at the same time!
Look forward to hearing back from you,
Cheers Bill

Luke Hitchcock, born in 1605, is supposed to have been a brother of Matthias (or Mathew) and Edward Hitchcock, and to have emigrated from Fenny Compton, Warwickshire, England, to America probably as early as 1635. He and Edward took freeman's oath together at New Haven, Connecticut, on July 1, 1644. He was living in Wethersfield in 1646 and 1647 as evidenced by jury service at the courts in Hartford. Luke came to America with the intention of taking possession of a large tract of land in eastern New England. But he found in inhavited by hordes of Indians prepared to resist English encroachments. So he abandoned this enterprise and settled in Wethersfield instead. Later he and the Indians became very good friends.
He married Elizabeth Gibbons of Hartford, Connecticut whose brother, William Gibbons of Hartford left bequests to the family in his will of Feb. 26, 1654. Luke was one of the two witnesses.
Luke's house was in the center of the village and he owned considerable other land, fourteen tracts being recorded at Wethersfield. He was by trade a shoemaker.
He was a Capt. at Crown Point in 1645, and also a selectman at Wethersfield in 1653 and 1656. In Nov., 1693, a Capt. Cotton and Luke Hitchcock were ordered to go to the bay to see Rev. Increase Mather, president of the "colledg" and the "reverend elders" at Boston as to a minister.
His will is dated Oct. 17, 1659 and he died on Nov. 1, 1659 at Wethersfield. Elizabeth remarried Oct. 2, 1661 and moved to Springfield taking her sons, John and Luke, with her. Elizabeth married yet again and spent some time in Hadley, Massachusetts. Eventually she returned to Springfield where she died April 25, 1696.
Luke and Elizabeth had three children, the oldest being John known as "Deacon John".
This is from pg 1 of the book and that is all there is about Luke and Elizabeth. I would make one comment... Seems that it is either a typo, or that it was not this Luke who went to see Rev. Mather in 1693 as it says later that he died in 1659. So I guess you'd have to do more digging on that point. Hope this is helpful to all you looking for Hitchcock info.

Looking for Lonzo father of Preston.

You would think that with such an unusual name it would be easy to find something on this person but guess what. It isnt! I need to find out info on his family and then foward.
Lonzo was the son of William Elias Hedgecock, Elisha Meredith Hedgecock, Joshua A Hitchcock, William Hitchcock, Isaac Hitchcock, William III Hitchcock, William II Hitchcock, William I Hitchcock. From the help of another researcher who posted info on Rootswebs, I was able to at least get this much info. It is sad that it is the more current relatives that has gone into recluse.
Lonzo Hedgecock married Mable Boubly or Barlby before 1904 in Illinois. 2 children was born - Rosa and Preston shown on the 1910 census. (I had a "Trial subscription to Ancestry and was able to get that at least!).
We know that Preston was married to Laura Bell Holcutt in 1927 and had 5 children. Per 1930 census the family resided in the village of Hoopeston, IL located in Grant Township in Vermilion County, IL. Any info on any of the above would be appreciated.

Re: Hitchcock to Hedgecorth

I found/was given the following and upon futher research through the various family trees on the internet I have determined it fairly correct.

The Hitchcock / Hedgecock / Hedgcock Family in Rowan and Guilford began with five brothers (and some sisters) who left a part of Baltimore Co, MD that later became Harford Co, MD, during the Revolutionary Period.

These brothers in order of age were:
Isaac b.1731
William (IV)b. 1735
Josiah b. 1738
Joshua b. 1742
John Hitchcock b. 1746

Their parents were William Hitchcock III and his wife Susannah Slade (both died in MD). All five brothers took up land that belonged to their Uncle John Hitchcock who had migrated to NC about 1740.

--> Isaac settled in Rowan Co; his descendants adopted the spelling of the surname as Hitchcock and Hedgecock.
Children of wife Nancy Horne
Nancy Hitchcock b: Abt 1765 in Baltimore County, Maryland
William Hitchcock b: Abt 1767 in Baltimore County, Maryland
Isaac Jr. Hitchcock b: Abt 1769 in Baltimore County, MD
Thomas Hitchcock b: Abt 1771 in Baltimore County, Maryland
Elizabeth Hitchcock b: 1775 in Rowan County, North Carolina

--> William settled in Guilford Co; his descendants adopted the spelling of the surname as Hitchcock and Hedgecock.
He moved with his brother Isaac to NC about 1775. Some of his children used Hedgecock as a last name.
Children with wife Hannah Coffin
Hannah Hedgecock b: Abt 1773 in Guilford County, NC
Joseph C. Hedgecock b: 1775 in Guilford County, NC
Jesse Hitchcock b: 1776 in Guilford County, North Carolina
William V Hitchcock b: 27 Sep 1777 in Guilford County, NC
Joshua Hedgecock b: 29 Aug 1779 in Guilford County, NC

-->Joshua settled in Guilford Co. Joshua later left and went to Floyd County, KY; his descendants retained the spelling as Hitchcock.

Joshua Hitchcock was drafted into the continental army twice between 1779 and 1781 while he lived in Guildford County, North Carolina. He says in his pension application that they were 3 month tours about 1 year apart. He also says that he continued to live in Guilford for years after the revolutionary war then he moved to Floyd County Kentucky then on to Whitley County and 3 or 4 years (1829-30) ago moved back to Floyd county. He was 91 when he applied for his pension 7 Dec. 1833 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He is on a list of Floyd County, Kentucky pensioners in 1835. Joshua sold the last of his land on the Little Helton Creek to Timothy Perkins in 1811 and moved to Floyd county, Kentucky. Timothy's sons Stephen and William married Joshua's daughters Ruth and Margaret. Timothy is thought to be the brother of Tryphenia Perkins, Joshua's second wife.

Joshua is listed on the 1800 Ashe Co, NC census 45+, wife 45+, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 10-16. All most all of these people could not read or write and the recording of the surname in public records and church records, etc was done by someone who was told verbally what their name was. The Southern dialect probably contributed to this also. Note that the surname changes occurred in the second generation in NC; the four brothers all stayed with the spelling Hitchcock. Hence, I can’t accept that they were trying to hide from the British (another rumor as to why the name was changed). Also, it should be noted that the records show several different spellings of the surname for the first three generations in Maryland.

You will also find in England that the Family also seemed to delight in adopting different spellings the surname over the years. I have an old letter from a Frank Hedgcock who was in Who’s Who in England. His thoughts were that the Family went back to a town in Kent called Hoo and that the original ancestor came there in 449 during one of the invasions of England. He also said that the spelling Hedgcock was closer to the original and that all the other spellings Hitchcock, Hedgecock, etc were corruptions.

Hence, in America today many of the Hitchcocks as well as most of the Hedgecocks and Hedgcocks go back to William Hitchcock I who left Kent (County), England and settled in Calvert Co, MD about 1670.

Susan,
I found/was given this several months back which explained the variable spelling to the name. Maybe this will help. In fact, the changing of the name happened around the early 1800's. Possible the changing of the name was to distinguish one family from another since the given names were used often.

The Hitchcock / Hedgecock / Hedgcock Family in Rowan and Guilford Counties began with five brothers (and some sisters) who left a part of Baltimore Co, MD that later became Harford Co, MD, during the Revolutionary Period.

These brothers in order of age were:
Isaac
William (IV)
Jpsiah
Joshua
John Hitchcock.

Their parents were William Hitchcock III and his wife Susannah Slade (both died in MD). All five brothers took up land that belonged to their Uncle John Hitchcock who had migrated to NC about 1740.

Isaac settled in Rowan Co; his descendants adopted the spelling of the surname as Hitchcock and Hedgecock, William settled in Guilford Co; his descendants adopted the spelling of the surname as Hitchcock and Hedgecock, Joshua and Josiah settled in Guilford Co (Josiah later left and went to KY); his descendants retained the spelling as Hitchcock, John settled in Guilford Co; his descendants adopted the spelling of the surname as Hedgecock, Hedgcock (have seen this on census) and Hedgecoe.

Why was the spelling of the surname changed? All most all of these people could not read or write and the recording of the surname in public records and church records, etc was done by someone who was told verbally what their name was. The Southern dialect probably contributed to this also. Note that the surname changes occurred in the second generation in NC; the four brothers all stayed with the spelling Hitchcock. Hence, I can’t accept that they were trying to hide from the British (another rumor as to why the name was changed). Also, it should be noted that the records show several different spellings of the surname for the first three generations in Maryland. Sometimes there is different spelling on the census for the same family!

Hello,
I am trying to find my Hitchcock family in the 1880 census -- to no avail. Several people within the same family unit were alive in 1880 but I can't find any of them so that makes me think perhaps the last name was misspelled during the census.

Any alternate spelling suggestions?

Here is the family I'm seeking. They were in either Connecticut or Maine.

Frank Benjamin Hitchock (head) b. 1841 Connecticut
Lucenia Redman Hitchcock (wife) b. 1843 Maine
Carrie (daughter) b. 1867 Maine
Estelle (dau) b. 1870 Maine
Martha (dau) b. 1874 Connecticut
Alice/Nena (dau) b. 1878 Connecticut

Thank you.
Susan.

I have been looking up info on Caroline Hanks Hitchcock (m to Samuel M. Hitchcock Jan 19, 1887 in MA) and trying to find her g'daughter, Alice (B?) who married John or James T Rogers. Her father was James Kent Hitchcock, son of CHH and SMH (above). It looked like there may have been a son of Alice and John or James named Thomas L. Rogers. When I saw your name I wondered if there is a connection, since you also said you are a Hitchcock decendent. Pls ans to my email: nanasusanna120@yahoo.com. I tend to get lost here. I also am a decendent of the Hitchcock line in MA

Not sure this is who you are looking for but there is a Joseph Hitchcock and Martha both born in Ga both age 26 on the 1880 Pumpkin Vine, Paulding Co, Ga census with 4 children Bell born about 1877, Annis (probably very misspelled) Jack born about 1878, Merucey (female and definitely misspelled) born about 1879 and Thomas 3 months old. I believe him to be Joseph C Hitchcock son of John Matthew Hitchcock and Mary Polly Roberts. Matthew D Hitchcock would have been his uncle.

Charlene i am shocked that you have not yet received an answer to you question by now as Carrie is very easy to follow. She is in the 1910 and 1920 census for Ft fairfield, aroostock, Maine with her husband John Levesqus and children. She is widow in 1930 in same location. Always listed as Farmer. Children have various spellings but appear to be Emma, Omar and Loomis. Carrie was born in Drunnond, Victoria, New Brunswick in March of 1888 to William Richard and Sarah Jane Hitchcock. She had many siblings. Richard and Sarah married in 1877. He was born March 26, 1855 in Grand Falls Victorria, NB to Samuel Hitchcock and Mary Ann Brayall. Sarah Jane was born October 1863 in NB. Info is available on Ancestry.com and on LDS Website.
