I think have posted before but here is the
latest. Am looking for
Humphrey family,
early settlers of
Ulster (which became Orange
) County. Can trace the
Humphrey family to
1724 to Little
Britain in New Windsor. First
known
Humphrey was John. He had at least 3
sons--James, John Jr. and Hugh. These men
all show up in various community, civic,
probate and military records from the 1730s
on. James marries a woman named Jane (he
was also a Capt. in the REvolution.). Capt.
James had at least 6 kids--Catherine, m.
John
Denton, Esther m.William Tilford/Telford
,Mary m. alexander Tilford/Telford, William,
who had a dau. Jane, David,(may be one of
the as yet unclear mysterious
Davids, and
one David also had a son David as well),
George m. Mercy (
Massey)
Belknap and moved
to Phelps NY after war, and Agnes, m. James
McLaughrey.
Hugh marries Nancy
Peacock, Hugh's children-
- 1.Evans, m. either/or or and Elizabeth
Lightbody or Margaret Ross. William Ross
is a laywer who I believe moves a liitle
north. He was invovled in a number of
community and family wills in the late 1700s.
A son of Evans joins his law firm later--so
Ross may be related by marriage. Evans has
sons, but they are in Ithaca and Albany and
I don't yet have room to follow that line
much.
2. Oliver--m. Mary (Polly) Young an adopted
daughter or ward of Hugh, and moved to
Phelps, NY after the war. Charles m. Elizabeth
Burnet and then Charity Van Auken (who was
the widow of Lodewyck
Vandermark), he moved
to
Phelps as well. SArah, m. David
Boyd and
then
Hamilton Bell, moved to
Phelps. James,
m. Phoebe Howell moved to
Phelps later in
life. His son Charles married Ana Eliza
Belknap. THis line went to Ithaca.
Some of his children may have gone to
Phelps.
John Jr. married a woman named Agnes or ann, don't know maiden name.
In this early period there were also an
Alexander, Timothy, William, Robert, David
and maybe a Henry in the area. May have been
sons, brothers cousins or nephews to proven
clan (some may be part of generation 3).
Also an Agnes in these first 2 generations.
There is also an Esther
Humphrey who married
a John Burnet in 1766. Don't know if she is
same or different than one above.
I have also recently learned ( but have not
validated)that another clan of
Humphreys were
settling next door in
Dutchess County. A
William, b. 1704 in Jamaica, Queensland NY
m. Elizabeth
Wiltse. They had a brood. A
few were born in Jamaica, a few in
Beekman Prct. and the rest in Fishkill. These towns are close enough to eachother and New Windosr to beleive that family settled close-by, but have no proof.
THe children are: Ann, Catherine,
Cornelius(Col. in REv) who also has a son William,
Debora (Deberah), Elizabeth, Henry, James,
John, Mary, Ruth, Ruth again, THomas, and
William. A number of men with the same
names served in
Dutchess County and
Ulster Co units during the Revolution. A few names
coincide with as yet unidentified
Humphreys in Ulster (which is now Orange) Co units. It
strikes me as reasonable that these two clans
are related--use or repeated use or similar
names, proximity, etc.
Also, a couple of
Roberts, a Hugh and
David
Humphrey served in NY lines in the
REvolution but didn't stay.
A Robert and David are burried in the Water
St. Cemetery in Great
Barrington,
Berkshire Co. Mass. A james d. died a bachelor and named
a Hug Enoch and Margt. in his will. There is an
Enoch in Berkshire Co at that time My Hugh
was a witness to his will. A different
Robert was living with his son DAvid in L.B.
around 1790.
Has anyone come across these or similar names
in thier research??? I would not swear to
the veracity of dates, locations or spellings
of names.
I know this is a lot of info., but I decided
to be pretty specific in this message. I do
have more info on the
Phelps line if anyone
needs it and I probalby have left out
something, although I can't fathom what it is
I would appreciate any help anyone could
offer.
Thanks
G
