I am descended from a Hustuss/Hustiess/Hustress Humphrey, who lived in Carroll County, Tennessee, and was born in North Carolina (family tradition says Onslow County) in about 1790. He was still living in 1864 according to a notification letter of his son Norrice's death during the Civil War. I haven't found an official date of death.

His family in the 1850 census for Carroll County, TN, includes wife Pheby and children Martha, Juda, Philicy, Lewis, Fanny, Penina, and Norrice (William Norrice, my great-great grandfather). Hustress had other children (Nancy, James H., William, Seeley, and Mary A.) who were older or who had married and were no longer living with him. Hustress appears in the 1840 Census for Carroll County and lived in Carroll County as early as 1832, when he was listed as a juror.

Other Carroll County, Tennessee, Humphreys in 1850 and 1860 include a widow, Elizabeth Humphrey, who had several children (husband's name unknown but probably related to Hustress) and a Holly Humphrey, also a widow (husband's name unknown).

The name Hustress is unusual enough that it is likely that this Hustress (my g-g-g grandfather) is the son of the Hustress whose will you refer to. I have also found mention of a bastardy bond in N. C. signed for Hustress by a Lawrence Jarman, which fits the names of the sons-in-law in the will.

I would be happy to share information.

Mary Anne Hamilton
mhamilton456@sbcglobal.net
Andrew Jackson Umphreys/Humphreys/Humphrey

My husband's great grandfather was Andrew Jackson Umphreys, Humphreys, Humphrey. He was born in Illinois in 1853 or 1854. The first concrete evidence I have is his marriage certificate in Moultrie Co. Illinois showing his marriage to Hannah Jane Willis on 23 Oct 1873. His name is spelled Umphreys. I also find an Andrew J Umphreys in the 1860 census (age 7) and a John Umphreys (age 11) living with Henry Snider and his wife, Elizabeth, in Moultrie Co. Illinois. I believe this boy to be the same Andrew Jackson.
Later, I find he and Hannah Jane in Texas and the last name is spelled Humphreys. During his childrens' lifetime, the last name is spelled Humphrey. I have enormous amounts of information on Andrew Jackson and Hannah Jane and their descendents from the time they settled in Texas and later in Arizona. Desperately need help finding his earlier lineage.

Hi Ginny!
I see you are still searching...me, too. I have some copies of emails that you sent to me when I was looking for my Burnett ancestors.
I don't have an Esther Burnet, but I have an Elizabeth Burnet that married your ancestor Charles Humphrey. Elizabeth was daughter of John and Gertrude Vandermark Burnet. Gertrude Vandermark was the sister of Lodewick Vandermark and sister-in-law to Charity (VanAuken) who married Charles Humphrey after Elizabeth and Lodewick died. Nice of them to keep it in the family!
I think I found the link I was looking for with John Burnett and wife Judith Otto. The little stinker changed his name apparently because their first son was either born out of wedlock, or born a little early, if you know my meaning....I believe he was actually Chauncey John who was the son of John Burnett son of Thomas. (This would be John Burnett's brother who was married to Gertrude Vandermark.)
ARE YOU CONFUSED YET? They all really liked naming their kids after themselves!
Nice to see a familiar name on here.
Phyllis Esler

I have been going soon research on this line of Humphrys. My husband name is Ronald”Ronnie”Moulder-his Mother's name was Myrtle Marie Patterson-Her Mother's name was Laura Humphrys(Humphries). She was married to Lott Patterson. They both died in Nocona, Tx. and are buried in Vernon, Tx.
According to Ronnie's Sisters their grandfather’s name was William Brownlow. The reason for this statement is their grandmother Laura was always talking about him. His father was William P. Humphrys, Jr. born in 1796 and died in 1889. His father’s name was William Pelham Humphrys born in 1754 and died in 1840 or 41. This Humphrys had 3 or 4 sons. William P., Samuel, George W. and James and for the daughter Hannah I don't know.
Is it possible these name could have been reversed? Do you have any legal documents that can straighten this out so I can put this family to rest?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Jeneva Moulder
txcripplecreek@yahoo.com

I've heard from family stories that our Humphrey family came to Kentucky from Wisconsin, but don't have much else to go on. I'd appreciate any info, pictures, etc. you may have.

Don't know if or how you might tie into my Humphreys line but the Scot - Irish issue comes up often.

Bascially lines of the "Humphrey, Humphreys, Humfree" line orginated in Scotland and relocated or were relocated by the English (Britian) to Ireland. They predominately located in the North of Ireland.

The relocated families were not accepted by the Irish (obvious reasons and history of the period) and essentially maintained seperate communities.

In the 1700's elements of these families emigrated to America with most landing in Pennsylvania. They spread out from there.

My line starts with a family that emigrated and settled in the Greenbrier and Monroe County Virginia (now West Virginia)area. In the 1830's a branch relocated to the Lacelede Missouri area and then after the civil war a branch moved to the Platte County Missouri area.

You need to find out where your family came from.. I'd bet they are from the Virginia - West Virginia line.

Humphreys in Miller County, MO

My great-great grandfather was George Martin Humphrey. His father was Wilbert Humphrey; mother was Agnes Blankenship. Wilbert's parents were John and Martha (Skaggs) Humphrey. When it comes to the parents of John, things get confusing for me. When I googled "Humphrey family of Miller,County, MO" a large document appeared. It listed a Joel Humphrey as John's father. Many years ago, when my father returned from a family reunion in Iberia, MO, he told me that Joel was John's father. Yet, many other family lines are listing a Christopher Humphrey as John's father. Can someone help me clear this up? Where did this info about Christopher originate? And, what is the Ireland connection? As a kid, I was told we were Scots. Help!!

Bringing my request up to date. I am looking for the marriage date of my grandparents, Henry B. Humphrey (could be listed as Bert) and Cora Lee Anderson. They are from Ballard Co., KY and their first child, my mother, was born there in Dec. of 1912. There is no record of their marriage in Ballard Co., therefore they must have gone elsewhere to marry. If there is anyone that can check what ever records that might be available for the year span 1912 to 1916 I would be most appreciative.

I have not been able to find them in the 1920 census and have checked in all states where they might have been. The story my mother told is that she was 7 yrs. old when the family arrived in CA. The last child to be born out of the state of CA was born in Ohio, Mississippi Co., MO Oct. 1919. Perhaps they missed the census because of traveling, but would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

Hello,I may have been his third wife, Bonnie Lou Veach. Our son, Michael Ray was born 3/28/1957. Earl's mother's name was Ethel (?) & Father was Frank. I was not aware that he had been married previously & had other children. We divorced sometime around 1960. He married again to a woman in Columbus & moved to Florida. He died while living there. I have more detailed information, dates & etc, that I researched for Michael and will dig it out if you need more information. Just send me a message with what you need. I live in Powell TN, a small town outside of Knoxville. I stumbled on this notice & it is very old. Hope this is of help to you.
Hi David,

I have also traced back to Jonas. I'm in the process now of fully referencing the Humphrey line to historical sources. Just wondering... do you have a photo of Hosea?

Kyle
