Latest research indicates that Group 7A Chandlers may have been living near the Jernigans at the time that they lived in Sevier County, Tennessee. The Chandlers of Boyd's Creek owned one of the largest plantations in Sevier County -- Wheatlands. One of the Chandler males could conceivably have had an affair with Hannah Jernigan and my great-great grandfather, James Silas Jernigan (born about 1850-1855 in probably either Tennessee or Alabama) could have been a result of that relationship. I'm currently researching records of the Chandler and associated families in Sevier Count, TN and will probably eventually take a research trip there as well.

In the 1930 census of Lewis, Scott County, Arkansas, you'll find Charles, age 45; Olive Gertrude, age 23; and little Carl, age 1 year and 4 months.

The census gives Charles' birthplace as Iowa. Since there is such a difference in age between them, I would suspect that Charles may have been married before. I would check Iowa for further records.

You might think about ordering his military file from the National Archives. I think a full file is 50 bucks. What info do you have that he was in the Spanish American War? The war only lasted for 112 days in 1898. Charles would only have been 13 years old.

Did he die in Arkansas? You might check out info for cemeteries in Scott County, Arkansas, to see where he might be buried. Get a death date from the tombstone and order a copy of his death certificate. That will possibly give you info on his parents in Iowa.

Happy Hunting!

Barry Jernigan

I (Ruth)married a Jernegan and was interested in finding out more about the family. I have very minimal background information. My father-in-law is Carl Jernegan. He was from Arkansas and his father (Charles) married a woman named Gertrude Cartwright. They had several children and when Charles passed on, he was buried in a cemetery with a military headstone, being in the Spanish American war. My father in law married a woman named Helen Markert and they had 12 children. It is my understanding that Charles Jernegan was from England but I don't know very much about this. My husband (Carl) and I have three Children ( Carl "Jesse", Jonathan and Jeremiah) we live in New Jersey. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

However, I believe I do have some Jernigan roots as well.

I wonder if there is a connection with the Smiths of Bertie County, North Carolina here?

This is from Grimes' Abstract of North Carolina Wills

Nicholas Blackman
Bertie Precinct, North Carolina
Will written 26 Aug 1730
Will probated 11 March 1730
Wife: Allison Blackman
Sons-in-law: George Smith and William Smith
Executrix: Allison Blackman (wife)
Witnesses: Edward Collins, Richard Moore, James Baker
Will proven before George Burrington, Governor

One thing I have found which might have some bearing on the Jernigan family background -- some of the wills of the Jernigans and related families bear some resemblance to the wills of French Huguenots in New York. I particularly notice the inclusion of remarks about the Resurrection -- noticably missing from some other wills -- such as those of the Quakers. An indication of the Jernigans' religious viewpoint being similar to the Huguenots?

I now have 67 markers of my Y-chromosome identified and there is no doubt that my direct paternal ancestry is Group 7A of the Chandler DNA Project. My direct paternal ancestor is Robert Chandler of Elizabeth City County, Virginia. The CFA (Chandler Family Association) strongly believes Robert to have been a grandson of John Chandler who came to Jamestown, Virginia in 1610 on the ship, "Hercules".

So now the task is to try to find out at what point the family name was changed from Chandler to Jernigan.

The Jernigan Family Reunion Book is still available from: Kay C. Stone, 2240 Banana Rd., Lakeland, Florida 33810. Kedar B. jernigan is in the book. Also recommend you check with the Johnston County Family Heritage Center in Smithfield, NC. They are on the web & they have info on neighboring counties in NC. My family descends from Lweis Jernigan & Zilpha Sanderford of Richmond County, NC. I think Lewis was from your Jenigans also, but I have not been able to connect them yet. Look up Kathy Hayes Jernigan's family tree, it might help you. Jim Utley genealogygroupie@aol.com

I just received the following information from a distant cousin who is a genealogist:
The father of James Cater Jernigan is: Thomas Bright Jernigan born about 1834 in Wayne Co., NC and who died after 1900 in Putnam Co., TN. Thomas Bright Jernigan was the son of Kedar Jernigan of Wayne Co., NC.

My cousin has traced the Jernigans back to England and thinks that they might have descended from the second son of the King of Denmark who immigrated to England. Also, she found that a Jernigan was a metallurgist who invented a form of metallurgy. She said that the Jernigans owned a large part of England at one time and were Lords and one was a Privy Councillor to the King but after a Jernigan sided with the wrong side, the Jernigans were stripped of much of their land and of their lordships. She took photos of St Mary's in Somerleyton where some Jernigans are interred.
Is the Jernigan book available now?
Thank you for your response.

James Cater was the father of my grandmother, Mattie Lou Jernigan (Snell) of Tennessee; he died young when she was a small girl. Mattie Lou was born 3-4-1897. We have been trying to locate the name of the father of James Cater Jernigan.

I found your post on Ancestory.com from 1999 and was just wondering if you are still there and can provide any information on the Jernigan family. Where exactly is the Jernigan cemetery located? Thank you
Judy

Don't know if you are still at this addy. My mother was Callie Nora Jernigan, daughter of Benjamin Henry Jernigan (came to Texas with his mother, Lucy Ann Snowden on a barge) from Florida and Martha Ella Edwards. My mother had cousins, Jesse and Richard Baker and another brother Joseph Monroe Baker born in November 1892. The Baker boys were the sons of Henry R. Baker and Callie Edwards Baker, married July 23, 1885 in Lampasas, Texas. Callie died in November 1892 after the birth of Joseph. Joseph was sent to live with relatives and I know nothing else about him.
Don't know if any of this info will help you.
I have quite a few Jernigan resources, but none that I have has any information linking Benjamin (father of Benjamin Jr) and his supposed father Jacob (husband of Rachel Bryan and son of Henry Jernigan and Phoebe Blackman). I think that Jernigan Reunion by Lillian Worley may have some information, but Kay Stone is said to have the only available copies and I don't think her prodigy.net account is still working. Does anyone A) know where I can get a copy/scan/etc. of Jernigan Reunion or B) know of any other sources linking these two. Everyone online seems to accept this relationship, but I'm trying to solidify my research. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello, I am the wife of John Richard Jernigan (b 7-14-62); my name is Lillian. I have begun a trace on his family also and am having problems due to the fact that his family would never talk about their ancestors and didn't care about the geneology linage. I have only the following info, but would be glad to share anything I can. You may contact me at LilJernigan@charter.net. I have only a 30 membership and will not be on here after that.

Anyway, this is what I have.

John Richard Jernigan b. 7-14-62, m. Lillian Dalton 2-14-86
Brothers: Randy , Ray and Jimmy (more info later on these)
Father: John Albert Jernigan m. Shirley Ann Crowley in
Evergreen, AL
John Albert's Father: James Albert Jernigan m. Essie Merle
Williams, (I beleive married in Evergreen also)
John Albert's siblings: Jack and Jake b. 1941(?) (not sure if there were any more, but I don't remember them)
James Albert div. Essie Merle in Evergreen and left her with the twins, Jack and Jake. He then went to Whistler, AL, just outside of Mobile and remarried; to whom I do not know. He did own a hardware store there. They wouldn't or couldn't give me any information. This family is a very disrupted family. The family in Whistler was as bad about distancing themselves as the Jernigans are today. We believe there were 4 brothers, including James Albert and/or his father (?) who split in VA and settled in various states. Currently, we live in Paris, TN and have found yet what seems to be possibly one of the brothers line. They moved here and established a family and home beginning in 1822. I have all of the information from their headstones. Thomas Jernigan is a name within this group, but I do not know if he is the Thomas I read about here, so often. Contact me if I can help, or if you find a thread for them.
Did you ever have any luck on Kedar, Martin or William Jernigan info? I have a Martin Jernigan in my line that I cannot find info on and there may be a tie-in with these names. Thanks!

Luke Jernigan, Ohio

I found a email address for Kay on Marla Boots' Jernigan Genealogy site which has not been updated in some time. I emailed Kay today in hopes of acquiring a copy in the coming week or so.

Luke Jernigan, Ohio
