Hi Pat, My gggf Edward Kilduff came to NY with his wife Mary Kilmurray in 1844. They came from around Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland. Their son James was born later that year in Quarryville, NY. My ggf Edward was born in upstate NY in 1847. Both brothers were living in a roominghouse in Roundout, NY in 1870. They worked with the bluestone there. Do you think there could be a connection?

They ended up living in Illinois. He came here without her and their children. They lived in [I think] CHRISTIAN COUNTY ILLINOIS] I do not know where they came from in Ireland and I do not know their parents names but I am pretty sure their parents stayed in Ireland.
Judy:

John is a name that appears in my line of Kilduffs quite frequently. My grandfather and his grandfather were both John. The elder John's father was Patrick, said to have been born ca. 1802 in Ireland. I have no further information re: Patrick until his John was born in Baltimore, MD, in 1835. Does your John have a younger brother named Patrick, perhaps? Or is there mention of a Patrick in your line? I see no indication any of our Kilduffs passed through New England, although my grandfather was born in NJ, for reasons unknown. I'd be glad to share any info I have if you think it is relevant to your family.

Mike Kilduff
mjk496770@aol.com
I am searching for more info about this branch of the Kilduff family. I have a family tree compiled by a deceased great-aunt that has a lot of gaps. John was a farmer and married to Mary (maiden name unknown). Mary was born 1792 in Meath, Ireland and died in Stockbridge,MA in 1884. They had a daughter Margaret b.1834 in Ireland, d. Stockbridge, MA 1904 married to Patrick Burns.

The Kilduff family also moved to MONTGOMERY COUNTY ILLINOIS.I was mistaken as to where they lived. The town was LITCHFIELD ILLINOIS which is not far from Farmerville Illinois. The cemetary they are buried in is HOLY CROSS CEMETERY,LITCHFIELD. These names would be MARTIN,ESTER, daughter Winifred[Winnie] Hendrickson[married name]Winnie had a twin sister named Essie Kilduff. There were 5 other children THOMAS, CATHERINE, LIZZIE, ELINOR and ANNA[DEWIG] THOMAS and ANNA WERE THE OLDEST 2 and they were born in ENGLAND. good luck pat

Hi just saw your message. My great grandmother was Sarah Kilduff. She was Martins sister. They lived in Christian county illinois. Martin had come without his family[all the same names] and was a farmhand while he made the money to bring them from England. He was from Ireland and I am still working on that. He died before Ester and I have a little on her too. Sarah Kilduff married John Carey, also from Ireland and they moved from Christian County to Montgomery County. They are both buried in a small town named Farmersville. That is in Montgomery County Illinois. Martin Kilduff and his family are all in CHRISTIAN COUNTY.I will be going there this summer or fall and I will look for these graves. I think this is a small conection, but will let you know after my visit. Pat Carey

Re: Kilduff

My mother was a Kilduff, born in Kingston Ontario Canada. The family later moved to Ottawa, Ontario. The following death notice is from the Ottawa Times 1885 http://www.ncf.ca/~es568/timesott.htm

County Dorchester, Jan 17, age 92 yrs & 8 mos, Mary Levy, relict of the late Jeremiah KILDUFF
of Quebec and grandmother of the late Peter Kilduff of Ottawa.

Peter KILDUFF was my mother's grandfather and was deceased in 1885. The Paper added a footnote "Kingston Paper please copy."

A copy of this death notice was in my late uncle James Peter KILDUFF's papers.

County Dorchester is in the Beauce country south of Quebec city and was named in 1792. Although the county is no longer part of the municipal structure of Quebec (city) it is recalled in such names as Saint-Prosper-de Dorchester and Sainte Marquerite-de Dorchester.

I am satisfied that this Mary LEVY was in our family. An aunt of mine used to visit unkown relatives in the area. She would have been about 100 now.

A cousin of mine investigated Mary Levy in the Province of Quebec and her investigation lead to the Lac Etchemin area which is about 13 miles north of the Maine\Canada border and north east of Moose River, Maine. The Etchemin which flows from Lac Etchemin to the St Lawrence River at Quebec city, allegedly was the highway in the area from the state of Maine north.

I have tried to locate Mary LEVY in the Census of Canada prior to 1875 with no luck. In most of the census taking in the early days the recorder spelled the name as it sounded and I have found many mispelled surnames in Canadain records.

I am wondering if your relative is part of our family and the difference in spelling of our relative is the result of canadian sounding of the name?
Hi Barbara you certainly gave me a lot of information that I didn't have.I belive that Martin did come to USA before his wife and children. I also think that they had one more son.[no proof]Martin was my gggrandmothers brother. She married JOHN CAREY and they lived in KING CHRISTIAN ILLINOIS,Martin lived in the same place but at a different farm. He must have moved to LITCHFIELD,MONTGOMERY COUNTY,ILLINOIS WHEN HIS FAMILY ARRIVED.Winifred and Esther were twins born in 1886. Most of this family stayed in this area and are buried in HOLY CROSS CEMETERY,LITCHFIELD ILLINOIS. Martin and Esther Monighan Kilduff are buried there. This information I found in THE GENEALOGICAL DATABASE OF BRENDAN FLYNN,M.D. PAT CAREY

I am writing in regards to Martin KILDUFF and Esther MONAGHAN, who married in 1874, Chorlton, Lancashire, England.
Esther is a niece of my ggg grandfather and daughter of James MONAGHAN and Ann FAWELL. Although James and Ann were English they must have spent 3 - 4 yrs in Glasgow, Scotland where Esther was born and then settled in Prescot, Lancashire. I have found Esther in the 1881 census in Prescot and her 4 children (Annie, Thomas, Mary and George KILDUFF) were living with their grandparents.

Esther and children must have gone over to the US around 1883, looking at the 1880 US census I think Martin was already over there.

I have the following children for Martin and Esther
Annie E KILDUFF, born 1874, Manchester, Lancashire
Thomas KILDUFF, born 1875, Manchester
Mary KILDUFF, born 1878, Manchester
George KILDUFF, born 1880, St Helens, Lancashire
Winifred KILDUFF, born 1886, Illinois
Esther KILDUFF, born 1886, Illinois
Catherine KILDUFF, born 1887, Illinois
Lizzie KILDUFF, born 1890, Illinois
Eleanor KILDUFF, born 1895, Illinois

It was only last week that I discovered Esther had married Martin KILDUFF, so I haven't been able to follow up the children apart from your Winifred. I do know that Annie KILDUFF married an August DEWIG as Annie was living with her parents Martin and Esther in the 1900 census as a married lady.

Regards
Kim
kim_tunley@free.net.nz
The names KILDUFF,KILLDUFF,GILDUFF, MC GILDUFF all seem to be from the same name . Just as so many names were miswritten, or mispronounced.
example: On my mother's side there were Mc Dermotts. If you go into MAC Dermot.com you will find a minimun of 17 spellings and variations on that name. Many you would not recognize as having any resemblance to Mc Dermott ( including Mulrooney !) is it any wonder that studying genealogy is so difficult?

Hi, My great, great grandfather was JOHN KILDUFF. Born in the early 1800's in Ireland. Came to Boston. Wife was MARY DONLIN born 1807. I suspect they married in Ireland. I tried to get their Marriage Cert at Boston City Hall. They only thing they had on record was that the marriage had been "certified" implying that it happened somewhere other than Boston. This was August, 1839. (I don't know if this is the date of the Marraige, or the certification per Boston City Hall.)
I don't yet have any info Re: possible siblings (or cousins) of either of these people. Susan, may have been a sister, or cousin to John Kilduff.
I may have some exact dates in my files if you need them. I'm at work, so i don't have much info with me at the moment.

Pat K

They had a son, James F Kilduff born 1847? I don't have much info on siblings, mostly just my direct ancestors, but, I think there was a sister to either my grandad,or his father or grandfather named Mary. I would need to know approx. dates. I will check back tomorrow for your reply. Pat K

Looking for information on the Kilduff Family. Susan was the daughter of Michael and Bridget Kilduff. Susan was born in Ireland in 1828 and imigrated to this country in May of 1847. She married Bernard Coyle in Greenwood, NY in 1849. In the 1850 census it appears that Susan and Bernard are living with a Michael and Margaret Kylduf in Steuben Co. NY. I have found a Michael and Margaret Kilduff in Steuben Co. in the 1880 census and he is a wagon maker. They had children Mary A., Marcella, Rose Ann. I have reason to believe that Susan's middle name was Marcella and that she had a brother by the name of Michael. I also believe that Michael ended up in Toledo, OH. Any help would be appreciated.

Circa about 1850 to 1870 the rest of his family, brothers and sisters emigrated to Boston MA. However, Patrick was the only one of the family to remain in Ireland, finally moving to England where he married and had 4 children, Ellen, Lawrence, John, Katie.

Does anyone have any record of immigrants crica 1860 whom had a brother Patrick. Athlone had many Kilduff families (the 1890 birth census showed 25, 21 for Roscommon just across the Shannon). James served in the Civil War, was reported to have moved to PA and had two children.
I have been looking for the family of James Kilduff. A James Kilduff in my line was born 11/8/1844 in Ulster County, NY and died 8/15/1881 in Pennsylvania. He also has a gravestone in the family plot in Saugherties, New York. James served in the Civil War in the 42nd (Tammney Regiment). His family were quarrymen and stonecutters from County Westmeath, Ireland. Your missing person may be one of the sons of James. James had one brother, Edward. He is my GGGF.
