Was Mary Antioch married to Louis Langlois LaChapelle?

Is anyone able to substantiate a Mary Antioch b. 1829 as the wife of Louis Langlois LaChapelle b: 1827? They had a daughter: Mary Ann LaChapelle b: 1849. In 1851 they probably resided in King, York Co., Ontario. Many thanks for any info.

Kind Regards

Hi Patti,
Just read your msg. I am researching the LaChapelles in Ontario and they had a way of marrying their cousins.
I think the name you are looking for is Mary Ontioch and she did marry a Louis LaChapelle also known as Langlois LaChapelle
I believe. My information states that Louis' parents were
John LaChapelle and Dolothy Kendrick. Hope this helps.

Jean

Many Thanks for your reply JeanIs.Is there a particular record you can refer me to for this? I have searched with my full Intl. Membership to Ancestry.com and am unable to find any records of a Mary Ontioch marrying a Louis LaChapelle or Langlois LaChapelle there or any other on-line ancestry programs. I would greatly appreciate any record(s) you can point me to that will substantiate this.

Many Kind Regards

Patti,

According to my family' records Louis Langlois LaC. is a common name. Louis is the name most in use in my family tree
so you can imagine how easy it is to get mixed up!
My records are in my Grandfathers writing and he says that L.L. Lac. was his grandfather and that he married
Mary Ontioch (aka Antioch) and they had 4 children; Mary Ann, Caroline, Liza and Louis. L.L's sister was also my
gggrandmother on my grandfather's and my grandmother's
side.( My gparents were cousins as were my ggparents and my
gggrandparents.) My records also state that Longlois' parents were John LaChapelle and Dolothy Kendrick (sic)
I am still gathering info here. Hope this helps however
obliquely. i would be interested to know what you have found out.
Thank you Jean laChapelle

Hi Jean

Yes the LaChapelle habit of cousins marrying cousins really plays havoc in locating the necessary vital records to verify them easily. The multiple misspellings by the records transcribers for tis familiesfirst and last names doesn’t help either.

Although your grandfather’s notes are very much appreciated, it is essential to verify them with the appropriate vital records. If you have any vital records that do substantiate your grandfather’s notes, I would very much appreciate you sharing them with me.

To date, the records I’ve found do not satisfactorily verify that Mary Ann and Caroline were sisters or the identities of their parents. The names of their parents on their marriage records are incomplete. Mary Ann’s marriage record to Derias Pringle lists her parents only as Lust and Mary and Mary Ann’s name is also miss-transcribed as Mary Shepel. Caroline’s marriage record to Simon Prindle lists her Father’s Name as Lewis Chappell Chappell and her Mother’s Name as Chappell Chappell. I have found a “possible” record of Mary Ann and Caroline in the 1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as the daughters of a couple listed on page 36 lines 12 & 12 named Lewis and Mary LaChapell ages 22 & 24, the transcriber of the census lists their two daughters as Mary Ann (age 3) the other as Mary (age 1) rather than Caroline, however. The transcribed ages of these two sisters on this Census are a very close match to the assortment of ages I have compiled from family records and vital records for these sisters.

That’s everything I have to share with you on this. I hope you’ve had better luck at finding the necessary vital records and I will hear more from you.

Mary Ann LaChapelle nee Pringle was my Great Great Grandmother. Without being able to substantiate the names, birth dates and birth places of both her parents with the appropriate vital records I can’t continue to research her line of my family tree any further.

By the way, this week I found a photo of Caroline and Mary Ann on Ancestry.com that was originally submitted by cindrella5 to the Clark Family Tree on 28 Mar 2009. The title of the photo is “1908 Caroline LaChapelle Pringle-Edith's mother and Maryanne LaChapelle Pringle-sisters”.

Many Kind Regards
