Info on Marie Arthemise Lachapelle

I am looking for information on Marie Arthemise Lachapelle (24 Mar 1880). Her parents are Theodule Lachapelle and Melanise LaFontaine. Arthemise married William Daigneau (12 June 1876) at St. Patrice, Magog, on Nov. 13, 1899. His parents are Onesime Daigneau and Harriet DAvis. The following year, William and Arthemise had a son whom they named Raoule (sp). Eventually, William and Arthemise had a successful dairy farm in the Montreal area.

William is my grandfather's -- Thomas Damas Daigneau -- younger brother. My cousins and I are looking for information about William and Arthemise's family and descendants. We are planning a Daigneau-Davis-Auclair gathering in 2010 and shall greatly appreciate any info and/or leads about our great-aunt and uncle.

mdaube159

Hi Jean

Yes the LaChapelle habit of cousins marrying cousins really plays havoc in locating the necessary vital records to verify them easily. The multiple misspellings by the records transcribers for tis familiesfirst and last names doesn’t help either.

Although your grandfather’s notes are very much appreciated, it is essential to verify them with the appropriate vital records. If you have any vital records that do substantiate your grandfather’s notes, I would very much appreciate you sharing them with me.

To date, the records I’ve found do not satisfactorily verify that Mary Ann and Caroline were sisters or the identities of their parents. The names of their parents on their marriage records are incomplete. Mary Ann’s marriage record to Derias Pringle lists her parents only as Lust and Mary and Mary Ann’s name is also miss-transcribed as Mary Shepel. Caroline’s marriage record to Simon Prindle lists her Father’s Name as Lewis Chappell Chappell and her Mother’s Name as Chappell Chappell. I have found a “possible” record of Mary Ann and Caroline in the 1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as the daughters of a couple listed on page 36 lines 12 & 12 named Lewis and Mary LaChapell ages 22 & 24, the transcriber of the census lists their two daughters as Mary Ann (age 3) the other as Mary (age 1) rather than Caroline, however. The transcribed ages of these two sisters on this Census are a very close match to the assortment of ages I have compiled from family records and vital records for these sisters.

That’s everything I have to share with you on this. I hope you’ve had better luck at finding the necessary vital records and I will hear more from you.

Mary Ann LaChapelle nee Pringle was my Great Great Grandmother. Without being able to substantiate the names, birth dates and birth places of both her parents with the appropriate vital records I can’t continue to research her line of my family tree any further.

By the way, this week I found a photo of Caroline and Mary Ann on Ancestry.com that was originally submitted by cindrella5 to the Clark Family Tree on 28 Mar 2009. The title of the photo is “1908 Caroline LaChapelle Pringle-Edith's mother and Maryanne LaChapelle Pringle-sisters”.

Many Kind Regards
Patti Molenaar
Patti,

According to my family' records Louis Langlois LaC. is a common name. Louis is the name most in use in my family tree
so you can imagine how easy it is to get mixed up!
My records are in my Grandfathers writing and he says that L.L. Lac. was his grandfather and that he married
Mary Ontioch (aka Antioch) and they had 4 children; Mary Ann, Caroline, Liza and Louis. L.L's sister was also my
gggrandmother on my grandfather's and my grandmother's
side.( My gparents were cousins as were my ggparents and my
gggrandparents.) My records also state that Longlois' parents were John LaChapelle and Dolothy Kendrick (sic)
I am still gathering info here. Hope this helps however
obliquely. i would be interested to know what you have found out.
Thank you Jean laChapelle

Re: LaChapelle & Native blood

to Dano1759:

I know this is a much delayed reply to your inquiry, but yes, there is definitely Native American blood in at least some of the LaChapelle line, that starting with Pierre LaPointe's daughter Pelagie LaPointe, whose mother was a sister of Chief Wabasha (II)of the Mdewakanton Dakota tribe (this is the tribe which runs the Mystic Lake Casino near Minneapolis, MN). Pierre was one of the first French Canadian settlers in Prairie du Chien, WI. Pelagie married Antoine LaChapelle, this is where the native blood enters this particular LaChapelle family.

Eventually many of the LaChapelle family moved to Minnesota, in Wabasha and Little Falls. One of Pelagie's sons, Hercules, lived in the Wabasha area (see 1855 & 1860 census) and received payment from the US government for services in the army during the Sioux Uprising in 1862 and continuing in the army during the Civil War. His surviving children received money from the US government in 1891 as part of the "scouts and soldiers payroll" which was given to soldiers, or their suriving kin, if the soldier was at least part-blood member of one of only 4 Dakota clans: Sisseton, Wahpeton, Mdewakanton, or Wapakoota.

Please reply if you would like more information. I am not sure if this is part of the line of LaChapelle's you are investigating.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Patti,

Yes, he's the same Abraham P. I hate doing that because the census enumerators were notorious for making mistakes (No!) and so makes the information unreliable. Not only that, but most of their handwriting was/is hard to read.

Anyway, I am more so interested in researching Abraham's parents, Louis LaChapelle and Eliza Sedore. If you come accross any information about them I would love to see it.

Unfortunately, it may well be that I will have to make a 'research holiday' out east to Ontario to search the parish records myself one day. I do have a pretty good pedigree file on this LaChapelle family, but the person who gave it to me could not give me any source documentation for any of the information and so, I have to treat it as speculative research for now. I'm an advocate for source documentation.

Happy hunting.
Cheers, Sid

Looking for information and source documentation on the parents of Abraham LaChapelle born 1845 who married Mary Charpontier (Charpentier). The lived in the Georgina area of Simcoe County Ontario in 1881 (Census). I have found many links that claim this Abraham was a son of Louis Langlois LaChapelle (born 1812) who was married to Eliza Sedore but have not seen any source documentation. Too many people have been posting speculation and unsourced data on the net which makes it difficult to accurately trace information.
Anyone who might have a census document, mariage or birth document of Abraham which can trace this line please let me know. Much appreciated.
Sid

Not from what I've found, he didn't have a daughter named Julia. I did notice a lot of Joseph's tho, so keep checking. Have you checked the LDS website? At familysearch.org. Good luck. Patsy

I will try to find out who to contact about buying a copy of "Friends and Family" by George Brown. It is available through the St. Paul Mission Historical Society in St. Paul, Oregon. I will try to get the contact person's name.

I don't think the Lucier's or the Lachapelle's have family reunions. If they do, I am not invited.

Judy

Teresa,
I'm not real sure if I'm the one to answer this query, but it was sent to me via e-mail, so I will answer. Hopefully Judy Bridges, who has helped me a lot will also answer. I too would like a copy of "Friends and Family on the French Prairie". As to the reuions, I don't know, but would like to.
Patsy
