Hello,

I am trying to trace the history of Antonio LAYA b Italy 1856 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1887.
LAYA is considered to be an English Translation as Antonio was likely illiterate. My wife's being Italian believes that it may have originally been LEA as Italians pronounce their e's as a and a's as e.
Let me know your opinion.
Why was the surname of William and Domenica's children Misterly and not Lea? Or was their middle name Misterly?

Regards,
Richard Orr
Toronto, Canada

Hi Cousin Rosmary.
I have been in touch with John Lea, who is a decendant of John Lea Mayor of Liverpool, who was "our" Thomas's uncle. He has taken the family back a couple of generations. I lost a lot of info with a computer crash, but there were 2 census where the family were recorded. Thomas was consumptive i think, I do not know when or how he came to Australia, however he married Edith May Carra and died before his son (another Thomas) was born, Grandma Carra ( Elizabeth Anne Pope ) raised the boy untill Edith "remarried" and so Thomas became known as Ernest Whyte. My email address is mleawhyte@iinet,net.au I believe there were 2 sisters Isabella and I forget, both taught music at a mine school. You will probable find ged files online if you search for either of those two names.
Cheers for now
Michael.

Re: John "Gimlet" Lea query

I suggest looking into Willis Lea's younger brother William, born 1811, d. 1857, m. Mary Lea Wilson, granddaughter of John C. Lea & Polly Stevens. Willis and William were among the six children of William Lea (1776-1873) and his wife (and second cousin) Sarah McNeil. This William was a well-to-do merchant at Leasburg, NC, a Justice of the Peace, Sheriff of Caswell County, Methodist, Whig, and temperance advocate. He was the second child and second son of Gabriel Lea of Leasburg (1758-1834) and his wife Elizabeth Ashburn (?-?). I am the great-great-great-great-grandson of Gabriel and Elizabeth Ashburn Lea, descended through their son Gabriel Burley Lea and his wife Mary McCauley. Because your line diverges from my own after Gabriel Lea, I haven't taken pains to verify the information given above about your people; use it only as a point of departure for further investigation. I am, however, reasonably confident of J. W. Lea's line of descent from Gabriel, even though the dates may prove to be inexact.

I have followed TN census info from 1840-1850, then 1870-1880. Any idea where they were during 1850-1860?

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 27 October 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

STREET DUEL AT HOBART

Hobart: In a desperate street duel on one of the principal thoroughfares of Hobart, a groceryman, F. P. Lea, shot and killed Charles G. Hill, owner of a barber shop. Lea is said to have claimed that Hill had been intimate with Lea’s wife, which caused a divorce. It is claimed that Lea had several times before threatened to kill Hill, but his threats were not considered grave. Both are prominent men, Lea was shot in both arms. Hill leaves a wife and child.

One more thing... I have searched diligently and hired a team of researchers ... to locate the famous letter written supposedly by James Lea of Cobb's Creek (Ben Rose's belief) and the document does NOT exist. A source is given... but it is NOT a valid source. It just isn't there. It is my opinion and I beg to be proven wrong... that someone wanted to lend credibility to the supposed letter to prove a relationship and manufactured the source or citation.

Thanks; Katherine Kendall made numerous errors in her Lea genealogy that even she acknowledged. But that was a long time ago and the records that are available to us now they did not have at that time.

I have read her info and was startled by the confusion of three men named James Lea (one of whom is my direct ancestor).

For that very reason I opted to become a skeptic and do my own research using original documents (as much as possible) and only citing those references that can be proven for each one of the three men. Even with my work - I ask the reader to be skeptical and Never TRUST unless seen with one's own eyes in original documents.

Not to discount Katherine Kendall's work - but she has NO documentation to prove the "Surely" and the other material has proven to be erroneous. Blessings on her material - but I can't accept it.
Thanks for writing.
