BATH, ME - Elwood 'Tarz” Legard, 90, of North Street died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 at the Freeport Nursing Home.

He was born in Bath on Oct. 21, 1914, the son of Ralph and Affie (Rooke) Legard. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the Class of 1933. During his years at Morse High School he was an outstanding athlete. 'Tarz” played on the football team, as well as the Morse basketball team which when playing in the Bates Tournament, he made the all tournament team as the center and broke many long-standing records at the YMCA in track. He attended Hebron Academy and graduated in 1934.

He entered the U.S. Army during World War II and in 1946, married Jennie Trail.

He was employed as a clerk for 17 years at the U.S. Post Office and retired in 1981. He also ran the family taxi business for several years.

He enjoyed boating.

He was a member of the Bath Lodge of Elks, the Masons in Bath, the Smith Tobey Post American Legion in Bath and was chairman of the board of voter registration for 15 years. He was also a member of the Downeast Yacht Club and a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Bath.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie Legard of Bath; a son, E. Sargent Legard of West Point; four grandchildren, Sargent Dike Legard, Catherine Legard, Todd Legard, Laurie Legard; and four great-grand- children.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath with a Masonic Service at 3 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Bliss officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath in the spring.
