Surnames: Smith/McGowan of County Cavan
Christine: I am new at this board response thing, I hope this is not the second copy of a message I think I sent earlier. I am interested in the Smith/Mac(Mc)Gowans of County Cavan as it is my wife's family. Her grandfather was John Smith of Kilebandrick, Co. Cavan. John and brother James came to the USA. James returned to County Cavan. Their father was also named John. James granddaughter is Philomena Smith Mcafferty of Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh. I am also interested when the MacGowans were expelled from Skye, Scotland and transported to Ulster, particularly to Co. Cavan. On Skye the MacGowans were a dependent family of the MacPhersons of Skye and metal workers for that clan. When the MacGowans came to Ulster their Brit overlords changed their name to Smith because of the family's metal working skill & trade.Do you have any books on the subject of the expulsion?
