Does anyone know anything about this particular John Mac/Mclean who was a preacher at St Andrews church in Rexton, NB, Canada? He died in 1850s and was 55 years old when he died, born early 1800s. I am looking for the names of his wife and children, if any. There were other Mac/Mcleans in the Rexton area, among them a Flora Maclean, my gggrandmother who married Lauchlan Maclean (son of Charles). I am searching for two groups of Macleans who intermarried. Thanks in advance.

In a history of West Branch, (just up the river from Rexton and part of the same pastoral charge) it says that Rev. John McLean served from 1826 until 1834. He was a native of West River, Nova Scotia and graduated from Glasgow University in Scotland. An obituary listed in Daniel Johnson's Vital Statistics from N.B. Newspapers, informs of his death in 1837. From the Gleaner and North Schedule of the Miramichi, Jan 31, 1837, "died Friday morn. last, Rev. John McLean. His charge in Richibucto (Kent Co.) he was obliged to relinquish in consequence of ill health. Left a widow and five children (Pictou Bee) died Pictou. (Nova Scotia)". An annoncement in Nova Scotia Newspaper Vital Statistics says aon 8 July 1826 at Pictou Rev. J. M'Kinley married Rev. John McLean and Miss Sophia Blanchard,
I don't know anything more about Rev. John McLean. I am trying to find family of Flora McLean who married John Morton. Flora was born on PEI, her parents John McLean, born 1809 Ulva, Isle of Mull and Euphemia McLeod born PEI. Euphemia's brother John McLeod came to Kent County around 1853. Although there are many McLean's in the area John McLean settled I cannot connect him with them or find anymore of Euphemia's family. My grandmother always said that Flora McLean was distantly related to the McLean's in McLean Settlement. She could remember "two old men" visiting from McLean Settlement when she was a child. She was born in 1910 and Flora died in 1917. So I think I am looking for around 1910 or a little earlier. I originally discounted this bit of family history but after I found Euphemia's brother which proved another bit of verbal history I have been taking this one more seriously.

Elizabeth..thanks so much for the info re Rev John Maclean. I think what you stated pretty much rules out that he's my ancestor. I still don't know who the parents of Flora Maclean were...the Flora who married Lauchlan Maclean, my gggrandfather, of Richibucto, Kent CO, New Brunswick. They were married 14 Aug 1856. I had thought that Rev Maclean could have possibly been Flora's father. Flora Maclean was also born in NS.

My knowledge of the beginnings of Maclean Settlement is pretty scanty. I do know that my ggggrandfather, Charles Maclean (1799-1874) and his wife Nancy (1802-1859) are buried close by in Beersville Cmy. They were both born in Scotland (we think Mull but not sure) and emigrated to Margaree, NS where their oldest child, Lauchlan, was born in 1828. They also had Archibald, Hugh, Isabel, Angus, Alexander and Donald. Little is known of my Lauchlan's siblings but his sister Isabel never married. Hugh married Janet McKarracher and left a massive group of descendants in NB as did my Lauchlan. I don't know that any of them ended up in PEI, so I can't confirm any relationship to your John Maclean. Charles was probably one of the original Maclean settlers in Maclean Settlement but I don't know if he had siblings or cousins there with him.

Best of luck in your research...maybe we'll figure out the complicated Maclean line some day. Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,
I am trying to detemine the parentage of my Mary McLean born 1805-1809 in New Brunswick. She married Thomas Windle and they lived in St. Louis de Kent.
The earliest record I have found so far is for a John McLean born about 1801 and wife Jane buried in the Ricibucto Protestant Cemetery. Although she was listed as Catholice it is certainly possible she converted at marriage.
What makes me think that our McLean's may be related is that the Windles had a son named Hugh and also a daughter named Isabella.
By the way, I think there is mention of your Hugh but the wife is named Jessie Mckerrichar (or something to that effect).

Cathy, as far as I am aware, my McLean/MacLean ancestors arrived in Margaree, Cape Breton, abt 1828. They were Charles (1799-1874) and wife Nancy unknown last name (1802-1859). Supposedly, they made the move to NB not long after as their remaining 6 children were born in NB. Yes, their son Hugh married Janet McKarricher (forgive my spelling). Their firstborn, Lauchlin, is my gg-grandfather, born in 1828.

I don't know if they came with others in their family and I haven't a clue how the other McLeans in Richibucto fit in. My Lauchlan and his wife Flora McLean may have been cousins. Their marriage is listed in the Kent CO register as 14 Aug 1856. See this link:

http://www.robocker.com/KentNB/kentmarriages.htm

My gg-grandmother Flora McLean McLean also was born in NS but I don't know where exactly. I haven't been able to dig into any records because of other commitments but hope to soon.

I don't know who Charles McLean's father was. We don't even know for sure if they came from Mull. It may be that they were from Rum. I think many came from Rum during that time but there is so little documentation and few passenger records. It may be that my group was related to yours, who were already in NB? I don't know.

Best of luck, maybe we will find out something more soon.

Trying to find the parents of my JOHN MCLEAN born March 2, 1824 in PEI. He states in one census that his Father was born in PEI, and that his Mother was born in England.

If this is so, this branch of the MCLEAN family must have been in PEI by late 18th early 19th century.

He married Eliza Whitby (born in Yoxford, Suffolk, England)
in Charlottetown in 1845. John states he is from SOUTH SHORE on the marriage record. So, maybe, Lot 65,29 - 31.

Their children were John Alexander, Sara Mason M. (Timothy
Henry) Mary Jane, Noah M.(Bridget Cantwell), Angus M. (Lavinia), (Sarah Clare), George William M.(Elizabeth Barry),
Ellen M.( John Barry), Louise.

The family was living in Kent Co. NB by 1871.

JOHN MCLEAN and ELIZA Whitby died in Weldford, NB.
May be buried in the Brown's Yard Cemetery of Saint Paul's
Anglican Church.

Looking for early Presbyterian and CoE.E. records for Queens county on PEI. John's birth doesn't appear on the register of
Saint Paul's in Charlottetown. Do you know of early Presbyterian records prior to the building of the Kirk of Saint James?

Any info. would be appreciated.

I don't think your McLean family is connected to mine. Mine began with earliest known: Charles McLean born in Scotland 1799, seen on Kent CO NB census in 1861 and 1871. He first travelled to Margaree, Cape Breton, circa 1828 where his first child, son Lachlan (my gggrandfather) was born. Charles and his wife Nancy (last name unknown) had 6 other children, all born in Margaree as seen on 1861 Kent CO NB census (Wellington Parish): Alexander, Donald, Angus, Hughey, Archibald and Isabella. They were documented Presbyterians, not Anglicans. I don't know anything about any other McLeans in Kent CO in 1871 but I'm curious as to where your John lived in relation to my Charles' family..Charles died in 1874 and is buried in Gladeside, Beersville Cemetery outside of Moncton, NB.

Your right. It doesn't look like we have a direct connection.

My John and Eliza McLean were living in Saint Louis de Kent
with unmarried children: Noah, Loisa, george, and Ellen.

John was Presbyterian but Eliza was CoE.E..

It's funny though, in PEI they have marriage and baptism records at Trinity methodist, and St Paul's Anglican, and
lord only knows where else.
