Hi Jennie

We are investigating our Ancestor James Paterson and understand that his Nephew, Henry Masterton and subsequently, Henry's son Leith McLean Masterton inherited the James Paterson shipping company (which we understand closed in around 1960).
We note that your enquiry was in 2005 so maybe you have gathered more info by now. We have also mailed Kate (the Lady who replied to you in 2008) to ask her the same question. Are these men part of your family tree? We are trying to discover the family link between the the Paterson & Masterton families. Perhaps you may know...? Inclidentally, if youstill live in Beerwah, we are just "up the road" from you.

Regards
Susan Dalziel
Conondale, QLD

I am one of four grandchildren of Leith McClean Masterton. Leith and Elizabeth had two children. Andrew Masterton and David Masterton. David has no children. Andrew married my mother Eleanor Harrington and they had four children. Lane, Kate (me) Richard and Emily. Hope this helps. If you already have the information - hope this confirms it. Leith is currently living with my parents. Cheers

Kate

Hi Douglas. I know you asked your questions about 8 years ago. But, because we can now look up census information, I thought I would offer some for you as an FYI.

In 1920, there were well over 500 IRWIN's in NY State and about 300 of them were in NYC. Well over 100 in Manhattan and over 100 in Brooklyn.

And, there were over 160 MacLEAN's in MA in 1920. And, there was a Leonard MacLEAN living in Wakefield, MA, that year. But he and his wife were in their 40's and no children were mentioned.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. I knew an IRWIN family in Winchester and Arlington, MA, in the 1940's and 1950's. They were part of a large IRWIN family which arrived in the US in the mid-1800's.

The 2 brothers living on adjoining farms in Winchester had many children. I don't know anything about there children - maybe 15 in total.

Fred - Walton is now an inner city area of Liverpool not far from where I grew up in Anfield. The nearest cemetary to Belmont Road would be Anfield Cemetary (near to Stanley Park and Goodison, Everton's football ground).

Maclean/MacLean/(etc.) in Pelham and Colerain, MA. 1700s

Looking for others researching the MacLean/McLeans [and all those other spellings one finds] who are in Pelham and Colerain, MA in 1700s. I recently learned, while re- researching my Clarkes that most likely the Macleans and Clarkes went from Scotland to Ireland about the same time and then came across to Massachusetts, about 1718 or thereabouts, settling in Worcester and then in Pelham and Colerain, MA. I know they intermarried a few times and I am from one of those marriages. Until my recent re-research on the Clarks, I did not know anything about the background of the MacLean families or how the surname was really spelled (not Meklem, Mecklem and all those others I had been trying to work with).

Now I am trying to make a connection to my first known ancestor, Andrew MacLean/Maclean/Maclein/etc. and any of the earlier ones of same surname found in Scotland and Ireland.

I do not have a clue as to when Andrew was born;, his first child was born 1727. Andrew married Isabel (---). I do not know when/where they died, and so no idea of ages at death or anything to give me further clues...

Considering all of the children this couple had, there must be a lot of descendants out there with whom I can exchange information....
MacLeans (McLeans) of Skye Scotland
Murdo MacLean married Helen Alice Cooper on September 4, 1901 in Dunbarton, New Kilpatrick. Helen was my Great Grandmother's, Annie Cooper Savage, sister.

I am trying to get the correct info on Murdo.

Murdo and his brother Charles were born to a Catherine (Kate) MacLean in Strath, Skye. Both were listed as illegitimate, so no fathers name.

Murdo was born December 22, 1874
Charles same date but in 1879

On the 1881 census:

Dwelling: Strolamus
Census Place: Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Kate MC LEAN U 32 F Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Dressmaker
Murdo (probably short for Murdoch) GRANT 6 M Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Charles GRANT 1 M Strath, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Son
Agnes MC LEAN 15 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Dom Servt

This says Kate was unmarried but why would Murdo and Charles have the last name of "Grant"? By the 1891 census the boys are now MacLean. On the 1901 census she is listed as "widow of Gas Labourer".

If anyone else needs MacLean info on this family:

Catherine's parents were Duncan and Mary McPherson MacLean.

Duncan born June 15, 1810 in Gleneig, Skye, Inverness. Only have his father's name as Angus.

They married January 29, 1839.

Children:

John...born Jan 7, 1840, Strath
Flora...born April 12, 1842, Strath
Margaret...born March 3, 1847
Twins?
Ann...born May 18, 1849, Strath (seems she died before 1851 census)
Ewen..born May 18, 1849, Strath
Catherine...born April 30, 1851
Neil...born about 1875

1851 Census:
Duncan and Mary were in Strath, he was a shepherd
address is Kilbride
1861 Census:
Family is in Greenock West, Renfrewshire, and he is a Balemakers Labourers.
Wilson Land Union Court for address?
1871 Census:
The family is in Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire
4 Watt Place
Duncan is a labourer
1881 Census:
Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire
he is a Labourer Sugar Porters Un E (?)
address is 20 Hamilton St

By 1881 Census, Catherine (Kate) is back on Skye with her two young sons, Murdo 6 and Charles 1 and an Agnes who must be some type of relative.

1891 Census:
Catherine and boys are now in Maryhill, Barony, Lanarkshire on 25 Argyle St
She is a Waskerwoman...think it should be washerwoman

1901 Census:
Catherine and boys are in same area but live at 32 Argyle St. Here she says she is a widow of a Gas Labourer?
Thank you all so much for helping me find my great grandfather and great grandmother.

My grandfather was Douglas Burpee McLean, born 1907 in Queens County, NB. I don't know when or why, but he migrated to Boston, MA, USA. He married my grandmother. Unfortunately I only knew her first name, Maple, and that her last name was distinctly Irish - O' something.

They had four children:

Douglas Burpee McLean, Jr. - married and divorced, one daughter, retired LTC from the U.S. Air Force, currently living in the Dayton, OH area.

Madeline McLean Mulhern - married and divorced, three children (Bobbie, Kenneth, Wendy). I think they all live in California now.

Cora McLean Birchfield - married (don't remember spouse's name) had at least three children - Allen, David and a daughter. Lived in either Randolph or Quincy, MA, suburbs of Boston.

Alvin Francis McLean (my father), born Feb 1934. Married and divorced (my mother) Alene Mayburn Skiles McLean (born 17 Dec 1934 in Van Burean, MO). He married and divorced one woman and is now marrie to his third wife, Jane. Currently living in Southern California. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Major.

Alvin and Alene's kids are:

Robert Arthur McLean, born 21 November 1953 at Scott AFB, Belville, IL. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant and is currently living in Hawaii. One natural child, Alvin Francis McLean, II, currently a U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant in MA.

James Vernon McLean, born 30 Oct 1955 in Pensacola, FL. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant. Married Georgia and had two children - Jennifer McLean Jones (married with three girls living in North Carolian), and , serving in the U.S. Air Force, married and in Alaska.
James and Georgia currently live in Mary Esther, FL.

Deborah Ann McLean Barrett, born 30 August 1957 in Augusta, Maine (closest we ever got to the "home country" in Canada). Married to John Barrett and have two kids, James Barrett and Kelly Barrett. Currently living near Sacremento, CA.

Linda Kay McLean Dye, born 30 December 1959 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Married to Drew Dye and had two children, Douglas and Katie. Currently living near San Diego, Ca.

Vicki Lynn McLean Hightower, born 30 September 19965 in Bitburn AFB, Bitburg, Federal Republic of Germany. Married to Thomas Hightower and have three children, Cody, Allen, and Emily. Currently living in Southern California.

Dennis Alan McLean (me), born 19 September 1963 at McConnell AFB, Witchita, Kansas. Married twice (no children from first marriage). Second wife is Kimberly Diane Robertson McLean. One daughter, Leslie Shae, and one step-son, Christopher. Currently serving as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.

I hope this information helps some of you to find some in my line as close cousins.

I am currently looking for any additional information on Alexander McLean, father of Alvan Lowell McLean, and would love any information on their lives in Canada and when and why they came to the U.S. Of course, I will eventually like to find out where in Europe they came from and trace back as far as possible. However, I've just got started and I know I have to take this in baby steps.

I have not contacted my dad yet to get his info but I will very soon and I will post any updates.

Virtue Mine Honour!
Dennis McLean
Sergeant Major, United States Army

Alvin

Malcolm MacLean of Barra to Cape Breton

I am trying to trace my great grandfather, Neil MacLean. He came to Molega, Queens County NS. around 1891 from Cape Breton NS to work in the Molega gold mines. He married Katherine Joudrey and as far as I know never returned to Cape Breton. What I know of his origins is from Census documents, marriage certificate etc. He was born in Cape Breton between 1860 and 1865.and gave his religion as Catholic. His father was Malcolm MacLean, born in Scotland ; his mother was Mary born Cape Breton. Family tradions says he came from the Irish Cove/Big Pond area. Two other young MacLean men Alexander and Donald came to Molega with him but appear not to have stayed. At least one of them was a brother according to my grandmother. She remembers them speaking Gaelic to each other.

I have found only one family in the Census listings that fit all the above criteria. They are listed in the Big Pond Census. and in 1891 the family is as follows
Malcolm MacLean, age 78,Head, born Barra Scotland, Catholic
Mary MacLean, age 70, wife, born NS
Neil MacLean age 27
Alexander MacLean, age 22
Anna MacLean, age 21
Donald MacLean, age 18
(Note: Malcolm and Mary are listed as ages 55 and 54 in the 1881 Census)

Is there anyone who has researched or is familiar with this family and could finally confirm that this is my Neil.
Thanks
Burdette
